Whats the big deal with A&D. Some people love it and some people hate it. I have used it in the past and never really had a problem with it. It just seems like one of those things like some people hate plastic wrap on their tattoo others think its great. What is the really big scare behind A&D???
A&D why???

Well for one it is in the diaper rash isle ya know? But i've heard a few logical explanations for reason not to use it. One being that it's an extremely thick ointment and alot of people tend to be a bit excessive when applying healing aids to their tattoos. Problem with the thick shit is it tends to clog the pores in turn causing minor pimples and the such. Now alot of people don't understand that a beautiful piece of art IN your skin can turn into a real piece of shit IN your skin if you don't help it to heal properly.I'm pretty sure there's a thread on here somewhere about healing processes. Might be worth a read for ya if you're interested. I met a guy who had extremely sensitive skin and a minor case of eczema as well , but loved tattoos , what he used , against his artist's reccommendations, was a lubriderm ultra healing lotion. his ink turned out so good now his artist reccommends it's use to every client. So I"ve kinda stuck with that. I think the healing processes are just as varied as the artists in this industry, best to check with the guy doing your ink first would be my advice.
My artist has said to use A&D. I use it for the first 4 or 5 days and then go to the Vaseline. advance healing. I wasn't sure if A&D caused a fade or something. Anyway. I always much sure not to put in on to thick. I am totally anal about my tattoos and want them to look great for as long as possible if not forever.
I was told to use A&D for the first couple of days until the tat started to peel. I did, very very sparingly, tattoo's healing great, but my husband did notice a few very small pimples where there was no tattoo. Which is weird, cause we put on very thin layers...maybe I just have sensitive skin. Maybe what to use to heal the tattoo is just as unique as each individuals pain tolerance...could be a difference in body chemistry and make-up! Who knows...not me...just a guess.

Oh, I just thought of a question I had that kind of relates.
I've heard people talk before about dry healing compared to healing with moisturizer but I'm not sure if there was ever a consensus on when or if ever dry healing is better or worse. Is it better to just not use the A&D at all and just let the tattoo heal on it's own, dry? Or, is using a anti-bacterial cream good for a couple of days and then let it heal dry? Or...(insert your prefence here!)
I got my outline done last Saturday, and the last couple of days I've really cut back on the lotion (Aveeno)...I didn't want to over-moisturize. This is my first tattoo, so I have no idea what I'm doing, but it seems to be alright.

I look at my tattoo alot just to keep an eye on it. I have to say since the redness has gone down it really has faded out. Just not as black as before and more grey. I am getting additions in Feb and my artist said he will touch up what I already have. I have been slowly weening myself off of the lotions. I am just so damb nervous I am going to F something up in the intial healing process thats going to cause the tattoo to be less of what it is. I am still peeling and I am contumplating to put more lotion on or less. Can more lotion screw that tatt up or can less lotion screw it up?? Which is worse??? All I know is that I need some more tattoos done for sure.

The last two tattoos i got I healed completely dry. 3 hours maybe on my forearm from Dee Dee went 3 days with just washings real well and a little h2ocean on day 3. Peeled day 4 no problems. Other tattoo was 6-7 hours on ribs from Mike Demasi mapping out a tattoo. totally dry, just washing that time. those two artists are very skilled, and dont overwork the skin at all so Im not sure this healing method works with a tattoo from every artist, but it sure was nice...
hands down you should be taking the advice of the artist doing the work, they should know how their tattoos heal better than anyone else...
Tattoo healing is a topic of much debate. Tattoo healing depends on the person getting the tattoo. A fresh tattoo is a large skin wound, much like a very bad sunburn. With ALL ailments the treatment has to be tailored to the patient.
Here is what works for me (my tattoos are SUPER bright with no fading)....
My artist always covers my fresh work with plastic wrap. Like I said before, the tattoo is an open wound and you want to keep germs and bacteria out of the wound. Plastic wrap does not let the tattoo breath so after 1 hour remove the wrap. The hour waiting period lets the skin develop a natural shield over the wound. WHen you remove the plastic wrap wash your tattoo with water and a mild anti-bacterial soap. Pat or air dry. The put a thin layer of Aquaphor. I use Aquaphor for about 2-3 days then it's lubriderm.
I don't use Aquaphor for much more than 2 days because it makes me break out, as does A&D. I don't use A&D because it stinks and has a fragrence added. Not saying it's bad, just not for me. Hope this helps
the darkest tat i have is the one i took the least care of, its right at my waistline where my pants and boxers rest against the skin..i only put A&D on it once, the rest of the time i didnt even pay attention to it was gentle with it or anything, i tink the only reason to use anything at all is if it bothers ya like if your swetty and your shirt or something is makin it hurt... otherwisei know a lot of tat artists that dont even use anything on most of their tats at all... but then they also recommend people use it.
pretty much try it once, apply the A&D once and then maybe 2 days later, and then just leave it alone see how it heals up for you. i have sence done that with 2 tats and they look great.
the main reason not to use A&D is with tats that have a lot of shade or completely darkened parts to them, you can pull the ink if you apply it too often
oops 4got something.. it also matters what ink is used...i tried that dry heal with some red, and it didnt do so great needed it touched up used a different red and let it go dry and it was all good. its just weird sometimes lol
