And more research.

Well I have now gotten to researching the lettering for my tattoo. I knew that this would be one of the more challenging aspects of the tattoo. I knew there was tons of fonts out there and I knew when I saw the right one it would hit me. I have decided that gothic Ruritania font is probably going to be the way to go. I think that it will go pretty well with the Roman theme I have worked out even thought I am pretty sure its not a roman font at all. I wanted to run it past the peanut gallery to make sure that there isn’t something wrong with it… not something like, “oh that’s not cool” or “ its played out”, but something technical like its to many lines or its going to be a problem once it ages, something the real artist can comment on. Here is a link to the font. Let me know what you think. Thanks! http://www.dafont.com/font.php?file=ruritania
I only posted once. Not sure why it came up again???
whatever the hell you do with that typeface, don't go all caps or you'll be sorry....
Unless you get the lettering GOOD size I think it would probably 'bleed' together over time and, although you did not state WHAT the words were going to be (say), I'd strongly suggest laying it out, the size you're thinking about getting it and seeing if anyone can read it, what's the point if no one can read it? And, as Al stated, don't even think about all caps, that would really be a mistake IMO. And don't do it in just the outlined version as that would just make it even harder to read...Doc
See thats the type of advice I needed. Its only going to be CTF 919 on two different lines. I have no idea that all Caps would be a probelm I was thinking of doing it on my arm and I wanted the CTF to be in all caps. I guess I am going to have to go with something else of have my artist modify it somehow???
It's Like Doc said, it Might work in all caps if it's just 3 letters, but whenever you take a decorative typeface like that, the capital letters are meant to be decorative and working in conjunction with Lowercase letters. Put 3 capitals together you COULD get a mess... you just have to do it and see. But put 6 of those caps together and you WILL get a mess, guaranteed. Doc's right about the outline version too... Outline fonts tend to look much busier than filled in ones. Good advice from the Doc...

I would suggest taking your idea to a good custom tattoo artist that specializes in lettering...he/she can take that font and simplify it somewhat and solidify it with some scroll work or whatever...the font you have in mind has definate possibilities talk to a competent artist...hope I have helped!...TAz
Thanks for noticing Al, nice to hear something positive about my posts (who ever said 'Honesty is the best policy' would be laughed at nowadays) Anywho, as to the origin post, Yes, it could look good IF all caps, even better if ya follow Taz's suggestion and have it 'tweaked' by a good artist. Another point-suggestion I might make, first, if those are initials or an abbreviation, make sure you place a dot between 'em otherwise what you have is the word CTF, which does not exist that I know of (I see that mistake more often than 'right', secondly, try to find numbers that match the lettering style, otherwise it will look dumb (to say the least) By the way, I wish more people would consult with experienced Tattoo folks BEFORE they got their work (do I hear heads nodding in the background)...Doc
The font seems to have numbers with it too. I am going to have my artist tweek the font...it will even make it more original. I want this tattoo to be "Art" not just a tattoo. I am going to research till the last min. I am sure I will be posting more questions in weeks to come. I am going to pick apart every part of this tattoo. I want it perfect. If I expect the artist to do 100% job then I better hold up my part of the deal and do 100% researching. I may not be an artist, but I can help too. For some reason I am totally intrested in tattoo. I know that being and artist is not the thing for me, but my love of tattoo forces me to be the best canvas I can be.
Saw when I rechecked that it does indeed have numbers, quess I didn't scroll down far enough, my bad. Again, I'm impressed that you're being so careful. Feel free to post any questions you might have, that's what this is about. Any idea as to who you're going to have do it? If not, let us know where you are and I'm reasonably sure someone here could suggest a good artist near you to do justice to your tatt....Doc
It will be done by Shane Oniell out of Del. I looked at about 200 to 300 artists and he will be doing it for me. Took me about 7 months to find him. I set the date back in April so its pretty much a done deal. Now all I have to do is get everything together for the Sept. appointment. I will be working hard till then. N
Doc, seriously, I like your style. You and Taz are a lot alike. Poster, you sound like a really thoughtful and creative person. A welcome addition to this forum! Maybe you ought to start a post, introduce yourself, and come back often! And Doc, speak out more... You are old school man. Like Taz, you are a great balance for people who wanna "Run down there and Fuck Em All"
