Apprentice dilemma

Hi guys, I need some serious help. I have been in my apprenticeship for 15 months and for personal reasons I have to quit. My teacher says that if I quit he takes my four machines, all my art, can't work for another shop and I must sign a document saying that I will never tattoo again. I understand that I have to give him something for my time at his shop but this sounds a bit drastic. I didn't sign a contract when I satrted. Any advice? Thanks
