Apprenticeship in San Diego Ca.

So I am ready to be a apprentice. Does anyone know of or have an apprenticeship open in San Diego Area?
i thought apprenticeships were like girlfriends. you go out and get them yourself, you don't ask someone to hook you up.
How would you know Bob doubt youve ever had either. And to the original poster. internets a good palce for reference and learning a little bit but for a tattoo apprenticeship expect to be wearing down some shoe leather going into all the best local shops you can and showing them your portfolio and letting them know what you are all about. It'll be a long road buddy but its certainly worth the walk.
Hi, get aids.
you know what man make fun of me all you want but dont you fucking dare make a joke out of AIDS you little cunt. I can only imagine the hateful pathetic little life you lead. but learn some tact you little shit. AIDS kills millions of people every goddamn year including my aunt whom i watched slowly deteriorate until a bad case of pneumonia killed her. I know your heartless prick but why not learn some limits asshole.
I agree, Bob Puckwood, you're shit's gotten pretty weak and tiresome, why don't you go find some other forum to post your lame crap on, surely you can find one for assholes like you were you'd be right at home. I realize you're a cowardly asswipe who probably hates his life and never has the balls to say anything like this to anyones face so you found this forum and are taking your frustrations out anonomisly over the 'net but, enough is enough. Jesus, what's your problem?-on second thought, I don't CARE what your problem is, just go away...Doc
Well Jake, you being some competition :P, I'll help you anyways. Get your portfolio ready first of all. My best bet would be to hit up PB, I know there are TONS of shops over there. One of my personal favs over that way has been Chronic Tattoo. They are a custom shop, and even though I've yet to get tattooed from them, their piercers have been great, very professional, clean, ect. I also just like the atmosphere. But yeah...we have so many shops over here it's not even funny.
Jeremy and Dutchman, thanks for the info. I'm glad there are people out there like you guys. it levels out the amount of asshole tattooist out there. Believe me I have found my share. PB was one of the places I was planning on hitting up. I've got all my best art work gathered up and ready to show. One guy told me an apprenticeship usually runs around 3k half in payment and the other in "bitch jobs" around the shop. What is your guys take on this?
I'm not too sure how I feel about paying for apprenticeships. I mean, I definitely understand why an artist would charge, but I just feel it's not as...genuine this way? I dunno. You go in there, do work in return for being taught...probably put in above average hours a week...sounds like a fair trade to me. Mostly because I'm not looking for a teacher, I'm looking for somethin more. That's just me though.
i think its different for every artist cause each has will have his own beliefs on the subject. 3k is a more than fair price for the training you will recieve if given by someone reputable, especially when you hear about these guys who 10k to train someone. and doing "bitch work" is always implied in an apprenticeship because everyone who went through an apprenticeship had to go through their dues. But anyways when your paying for your training it seems like thered be less stress on the artist because if you flake out, your still wasting his time but hes still getting paid for it. But if you find an artist willing to train you for free, thats the best. not because you save money, but because youve found someone whose willing to invest HIS time with you, you know that if you totally dedicate yourself to the art he'll push you as far as you want to go.
The price of an apprenticeship can vary alot and be careful and be selective. There are people out there taking advantage of some serious people seeking to learn and basically ripping them off, others that really don't teach you what you really need to know, just to get your money/labor. There are also great studios who will actually teach you what you need to know and actually enjoy helping someone else get into the profession and don't treat you like crap in the process. Make sure you check the place out before you even ask. If the place is a dump and/or the work they put out is substandard, I'd strongly advise you to go elsewhere, even if it is the first place that said 'yes'. Also be advised there are a lot of people wanting to get into this profession and it probably ain't going to be 'easy' (nor should it) Naturally, another factor is just how good an artist you really are, the better you really are, the better your chances of getting into a good studio.I know I've had way too many people ask about apprenticing whose 'artwork' sucked but they thought was 'great'. And don't go in being cocky as that really isn't going to win you anything, no matter how good your portfolio may be. You don't need to kiss ass either, and be prepared for alot of rejections, it ain't gonna be easy. But, if you're 'gifted' and determined and willing to really work at it, I'm pretty sure you will 'get a chance'. If you are serious, I wish you luck...Doc
As far as my art work goes.... I tend to suprise myself... I tend to do my best work when I am doing it for someone else...Thats when I really push myself to go one step further then I have before and I always seem to... I am working on getting my paper portfolio up on the net... When I do I will post it here for you all to check out.. I would like to get an opinion from other artists... I feel my art is skin worthy but like you guys said "just because i do......" thanks for all the info.. this place has been great for me so far...
Cant wait to see the portfolio you put together. Did you check out the "I want to become an artist" thread at the top? one thing I havnt hear din this thread is that getting tattooed by really talented professionals is a great way to experience the best in action. I do personally know 2-3 awesome tattoo artists who didnt get tattooed until way into their career, but I would suggest getting some great tattoos from great artists and then the door will open if your good enough... Your lucky, there are some great artists and studios in San Diego.
