Art styles

I have been interested in becoming a tattoo artist since I was a kid.(Grandad had the obligatory WW2 tatto, coolest thing in the world) I consider myself to be a relatively talented PENCIL artist, but am somewhat limited in genre(mainly cartoons and comic book style) I understand that without a lot of artistic talent this may be a bit of a pipe dream, but is there a specific style of art I should be learning, or should I just try to learn as many different styles as possible. I once read somewhere that you don't necessarily have to able to draw to tattoo, but that sounds a bit like wishful thinking on someone's part. Any advice. And no, I don't plan on even working towards an apprenticeship until I think I am good enough, regardless of what anyone else may tell me.
