Black to Cover?

Is it possible in anyway to add or cover-up a black and grey tattoo with color. I'd like to keep the same tat (due to the fact it's a memorial) but add color to it. I want to go basically all color on that arm. The main part of the tat has very light grey shading, can that be done over with color and retain the shaded look?
