Can I still give blood?

I have heard many people say that once you are inked you can not donate blood or recieve a blood transfusion. Then from the same people I heard you could but only after six months to a year. Can someone out there please tell me because depending on what I hear is whether I still get my tattoo or not. Any help or comments are greatly appreciated.
