WHOS GOT INFO ON THE BEST MAGNET WIRE FOR MAKING COILS? WHAT GAUGE?

24 gauge magnet wire is the most common size.Quality does matter,while motor winding wire will work it isn't held to the same quality standards as magnet wire.There's all kinds of web sites out there.I'll give you one(Doesn't have anything to do about wire but is good info)Tattoo machine electromagnetics.just type that in your browser.Good luck

THANKS FOR THE INFO. I GUESS I'VE BEEN WONDERING IF A SET OF 6 WRAP COILS WOUND WITH 22 GAUGE MAGNET WIRE WOULD RUN MUCH DIFFERENT THAN A SET OF 8 WRAP COILS WOUND WITH 24 GAUGE WIRE. HAS ANYONE EXPERIMENTED WITH THIS?

Your welcome,now stop yelling at me:) The larger diameter wire has less resistance.I'm guessing that would allow for a faster discharge rate.Remember too that on electromagnets more layers=more magnatism,if you use bigger wire it'll take more space and unless your making your own frames they might not fit .Back to the layers,if you use less it will take more power to get the same magnetic pull as say an eight layer set up=HEAT.Half the fun is expermenting,try it out and let me know how it goes.

Listen to Rob (Hotspark)...I am the proud owner of 5 machines he built for me and he wrapped all these coils...they kick ass...he knows his stuff!!!

I DO SEE WHAT YOU MEAN. I WILL LET YOU KNOW ABOUT THE 6 WRAPS WITH 22 GAUGE. I KNOW A COUPLE OF CATS THAT USE 6 WRAP COILS FOR PUSHING 3-5 LINERS. THEY SWEAR BY THEM. THEY USE THE 24 MAGNET WIRE GAUGE TO WRAP THEM. I HAND WRAP MINE WITH THE SAME WIRE. I FIND IT DIFFICULT TO KEEP TRACK OF THE WRAPS PER LAYER. THANX 4 THE INPUT .

ive often asked myself the same question when i was first putting machines together, i used to go through coils cuz id break the wire on the inside. and wondered why they couldnt make less wraps with a thicker gauge wire. arent 12 wraps overkill? you have to overcome alot more voltage, but is the amount of magnetism you get from the wraps worth it? it seems like 8 wraps are standard. its what i use all the time. why go any higher? i know next gen coil cores are smaller than normal and mushroom out to allow an extra wrap i believe. and they are assembled by some dude who was a big wheel for nasa... legend has it
