I just had some touch up work done by my guy in Vancouver, WA. I think most artists will usually back up their work and not charge for a touch up. It was strange because I had three different tattoos done on my forearm and one of them healed perfectly, another near perfect, and the last one was just a mess. It scabbed over like I couldn't believe, the scabs would come off when I would move in my sleep, and the end result was a pretty blotchy mess. Since the same guy did all three the same way and on the same day, and two came out great, I knew it wasn't the artists fault. Anyhow, he redid the blotched one (for free) yesterday, and made what I thought was a good suggestion. Not long after the work is done (within a few hours), you'll often see sort of a clear glaze over the work. That's actually the plasma that helps the work scab up. It's always going to scab, but in my case it was scabbing too much. Part of the problem also was I was moisturizing it from day 2, and I was actually giving the scabs too much moisture and bulk. I think you can actually over moisturize new work. Anyhow, he recommended I take a non abrasive soap and the hottest water I could stand and just using my hand (no towels or anything even slightly abrasive), rub gently back and forth across the artwork to help remove some of the plasma. I did just that and have noticed the scabbing is now much more comparable to how the other two were (the ones that came out right), and I'm pretty sure this is going to look great. If not, he told me to come back again if necessary. Also, I'm going to wait a few extra days before applying a non-fragrance moisturizer. If you didn't have problems with scabbing, then that may not help you, but I think most artists (provided it's not a huge job or a result of you being negligent in the care of your tattoo) will do touch up work for free. If you're noticing major problems with the outlines and coloring, maybe you'll want to look for a new artist (but it's hard to know without looking at the ink).
