wow that is just not good, chewed up and well tribal stars are very trendy
eh, I guess if you dont have anything nice to say...
Black looks solid, lines look good, skin seems to be ok. from 1-10 I'll give it a 6
a 6???? Are you serious? I dont know the motivation behind the tattoo, but artistically I find it absolutely boring. I'd give it a 2.
I'll agree that its as far from original as possible and not at all impressive artistically. but its a techinally well executed tattoo, which i believe is what fallen was rating. Not the overall tattoo, just the linework color, and lack of trauma to the skin. All in all not a bad tattoo especially when its been done by someone calling themselves "scratcher"
ohsilly, I would let your comment stand as is but you wrote "not a bad tattoo" and I have to tell you, if I was explaining what a good tattoo was and a bad one, I very well might use this as an example of a bad tattoo. And if I study all the lines and points and thicknesses and placement and all the other things I would hyper-focus on, I would say technically its adequate at best. Sure, the photo is pretty flash burned, and its not a head on shot, but I would not be too proud if that came from my studio, completely disregarding the artistic merit. I guess I'll let the artists really discuss the technical attributes of this tattoo, maybe its actually better than average... Ive been wrong before and Ill be wrong again... In any event, Here is a lower leg that takes up just a little more skin (though its obviously more saturated).
trying to give the guy some encouragement. 5 is bad, 6 is not that bad. Of course stars tattoos, and all the emo gay shit is over played. But you can expect everyone coming to this board be Paul Booth or be bashed. There are horrible, excellent and fair executions. Encouragement is part of tattoo learning process Gabe. Osilly you are right on the money with what I meant.
No I see what you mean. I wouldnt hope to see work like that coming out of shops. I was saying in terms of the guys amateur status its at a least a tattoo he can look back and not regret completely. But yea even if a person does come in just wanting some stars theres always a way to do it more interesting than that. Its tattoos like that need to be done away with if ever we want to start really concentrating the talent pool in the industry. Im probably opening a can of worms when i say this, but i almost think that flash is detrimental to tattooing sometimes. I mean unless its used as a basis for inspiration rather than just a cookie cutter tattoo that gets tattooed on twenty people a day. It allows the tattoo artist and not to mention the tattooee to be a bit lazy in terms of deciding on a tattoo.
"But you can expect everyone coming to this board be Paul Booth or be bashed." haha word. If theres one consistent with Tattoo artists from the local flash jockey to the most recognized names in the business, is that they all started at the bottom of the totem pole. doing tattoos they would smack themselves silly over, if theyd done them while at their current skill level. You gotta start simple and work your way up. I will say this though, at least the guy or gal for that matter is choosing to do simple designs that they can do aqequately rather than biting off way more than they can chew with some over complicated desgin for their current talents.
I meant "You CAN'T expect" my bad dyslexia!
Fallen King, I feel pretty confident that people learn when you encourage the right things, but leanr poorly if you encourage them doing bad things. Being brutally honest about the wrong things is how people get better. 5 is bad on the apprentice scale, 5 is average to real tattoo artists. This tattoo is a 5 if done by an apprentice, 1-2 if done by a working tattoo artist. I dont expect every artist on this forum (or in the tattoo galleries) to be of Paul Booths caliber, but I feel that, especially with tattoos, honesty is the best policy. This is a bad tattoo, theres no 6 or technically good about it. Heres what me and an artist here came up with off the tops of our heads. Everyone starts at the bottom, and through brutal honesty gets better, not by encouraging crap work. Heres a quick list of whats wrong... I think that it is a disservice to the artist the pat him on the back if he doesnt deserve it, and to the public that deserves to know that this tattoo is acceptable if done for free by an apprentice (though, said apprentice should be practicing on smaller pieces ) and pretty much unacceptable if done at a studio. Isilly, your last post was right on.
I do want to add, and I mentioned it as a disqualifier before, I dont know the motivation behind getting the tattoo, and at the end of the day if the client is happy with it then thats all that matters to them. But if someone asks my opinion, they are gonna get it...
You an I are on the same page, Gabe. I never said the tattoo was great. The unbarriered chair is unacceptable.
thank you all for comments on this piece, the chair she is sitting in isnt the chair she was tattooed in. i have been tattooing for a few months now only small simple pieces. i just have to learn as i go, there are no chanses for me to get a mentor here so if i want to tattoo i have to learn myself. sorry for my bad english.
Where are you from?
Hi. I am from Norway a small country in north europe
"Everyone starts at the bottom, and through brutal honesty gets better, not by encouraging crap work." Very very true. Ive noticed this as well, you can always tell the most talented and passionate artists by their dissatisfaction with their work, no matter how good it turns out, they still always yearn to make it better. No matter how perfect someone might assure them their work is, they still are never fully happy, because it can always be done better. Its a cool thing to see in artists, that constant drive to make the art ever more incredible.
i am never truly satisfied with my work, i feel that there is so much i want to do but i dont have the "wisdom"knowlage" ehhm to do it, to shitty i cant get a teacher to show me some of the basics to do it
Hehe :) Im from Finland so I know where Norway is ;) :D Have you tried on asking some shops around there? Heres a great one in there. Might help, might not... www.letsbuzz.no
thanks for the link i will check it out. The sad story of tattooing here in norway is that almost every shop is owned and run by mc gangs souch as hells angels and bandidos, i dont want anything to to with any of them. bandidos threatened me and then they stole all my equipment. i had to move and by new stuff. I live around 6000 kilometres from the (letsbuzz) shop so if they accept me i had to quit my job and move
