i just moved to san francisco and theres a convention goin on this week, do you guys think its appropriate to go around with my portfolio looking for an apprenticeship there or should i just wait till its over and go around to the shops?

i would go first day and look around see if you see any signs like artist wanted then next day go with your best and ask them if they would be interested in a apprentice.some of these folks come from across the nation so keep your eye out.good luck
I would say it's a fabulous place to learn and pick up a lot of info. I can't speak for everyone but I know a lot of shops are already super busy with other stuff so it probably wouldn't be a good time for them to really focus on your work.
Definitely go though! Introduce yourself to people and insert yourself. Maybe bring your portfolio just in case someone might have time to look. Mostly I'd observe, network, get tattooed if you can. One of the best ways to learn bout tattooing is by getting amazing tattoos!
