Custom work

I need some help. I am getting my first tat done. I took the time to visit 4-5 different shops in New Jersey, both in town and out of town. I settled on an artist that was very helpful and seemed excited to do the work. His portfolio looked good also. I left him some samples of what I was thinking. He was going to do up some custom work for me. Please keep in mind it is a smaller piece( about 6in in length) When I got the sample back from him it appeard he just copied the work I gave him. I know he is very busy witch of course is a good thing. He said he would customize it some more and have the work ready for my appointment. My question is, is this the way it is done? I understand that I am not getting a full back peice done but I also do not want to feel like the design is slapped together. Should I look for another artist or trust that it will be fine?
Did you put down a deposit for custom artwork?
Yes I did. I gave him $30. The total job was going to cost around $150. I offered to give him more upfront but he said that he gets a $30 deposit.
I suggest that you go see the artwork and if it isn't what you want ...say so!
