That depends on the effect you are trying to create.Generally speaking a bold design with heavy black lines that is not too crowded is going to show best.Large designs not complicated with too much detail with strong line weight.Jacci Gresham is a black lady tattooist from New Orleans if you do a search you may be able to find some of her views,I'm happy to write back and answer questions.Colors can be used but will be tinted by the tone of your skin ..imagine a design drawn on brown paper with a piece of brown glass placed over it.

you should go to a good tattooer, who has tattooed alot of darker skin tones.check out www.regnyc.com Regino does excellent work, and he used to work on the lower east side..so he has tattooed alot of darker skin people.and i like rodrigo's work,at www.risingdragon.com in brooklyn, check out flyrite-tattoo.com Elio is really good, and he has some good tattooers at his shop.

When in Los Angeles, see Teresa3D. She is the only Professional Black female tattoo artist this side of the Mississippi River. Her experience in tattooing the darker skin tones is well known. She is a very creative artist that will tell you stright up what will work and what won't. She holds her artwork very close to her heart, so everything that goes on your body walks out her doors. Because of this, you will be very happy with the result.

Hi, I'm also dark skinned and I'm getting my first tattoo. But I wana make sure I get the right person who can handle my color tone. I'm not sure who to go or who's good at tattooing a dark skinned person. If anyone knows someone who specializes in that field please let me know. That's my direct email add. Thanks

hey, my name is michael welch and im a caramel skinned tone. Im getting my first tattoo and imnot sure iabout artists who havent worked on brown skin. do you inow of any in this area
I picked up a mag the other day called Urban Ink, you people of the darker skintones may want to take a look at it. It's dedicated to tattoos on , well people with darker skin lol. All in all in my opinion I thought the level of tattoos that were showcased were pretty horrid by today's standards. But I would imagine that's quite a chore finding competent artists for darker skin.
What I've learned from getting tattooed and seeing a lot of my friends tattoo's (african american, so am I )
Try to stay away from color, it just doesn't pop as much as it does on people of lighter complexion.
Be very careful during the healing process our skin tends to keloid, it may also take a little longer than other peoples tattoo's while a buddy will heal in 2 weeks it may take me 3 - 5 weeks to completely.
As far as designs try to do bold and big, don't get hung up in details.
From my experience Blackwave and Zulu tatttoo are two shops that both do great work on black folks.
Personally I go to Marco Cerretelli( http://www.marcocerretelli.com ) at Spotlight tattoo and more than likely I won't go anywhere else.
Here are some pictures of the work he has done on me

hope this helps
Marco does great work, he told me about your Russian Thieves cat. Turned out great.
The key is to choose a deseign that is bold and has strong dark tones in it.The wrong choice no matter who does it it just dont work.I would not do color either. From my experience with working on dark skin tribal looks good maybe a bold oriental masks stuff like that not like an oriental dragon....good luck...
Bold black seems to be the only thing that looks good on darker skin tones, color just doesn't show and won't turn out. besides, it goes well with the dark anyway.
get mom's ink aka millenium ink as far as colors get dragons blood black outlining ink or kuri sumi ink for big fill ins sincerely the tattoo doctor here fixin the worlds messed up overpriced tattoos
My name is Tee. I'm one of a few black female tattoo artists. I treat each of my clients like family and I will tell you my opinion on what will and will not work for you (from my experiences). www.myspace.com/badgirltattoos
or please give me a call, I'll be more then happy to discuss your future tattoo with you.
hey man, go with reds black and grey, they show up the best. bolder lines and larger tats show up a lot better, stay away from extreme details. also be prepared to have the artist go over the line a couple extra times(to make the lines "stronger") stay away from bright colors they will just look like crap. and your skin will take about twice as long to heal as someone with lighter skin, hope that helps you

Ink in the Hood: Tattoos for Darker Skin by Randy Dragon Holder
Book Description
One of the biggest challenges currently facing tattoo artists is to effectively tattoo dark skin. This book introduces tattoo artists to a different approach to tattoo art. Over the course of tattooing thousands of people of color, the author developed techniques and discovered tattoo patterns that best reflect his clients' cultures and communities, many of which are displayed here. Using 380 striking color photos of his work and a recounting of amazing experiences that led an artist involved in tattooing since the 1960s to discover techniques and applications that produce effective, clear tattoos on dark skin. This book is a grand introduction to tattooing dark skin and a fascinating resource.
