First time Tattoo

Hi everyone, I just got a tattoo today for the first time, and I came here to ask some general questions. First, the artist that tattooed me told me to use vaseline intensive care advanced healing on it. Everyone I have talked to after that, told me NOT to use that, and to use bacitracyn. Problem. I put bacitracyn on it, and I rinsed my hands, but forgot to wash them completely. Am I going to get infected? Is it true you're not supposed to use anything with vaseline on it? I am getting mixed answers from everyone! Can someone tell me the proper way to care for my tattoo? Is it too late? If it does get infected, is it gone for good or do you just wait for the infection to go down. Sorry if I sound clueless. It's because I am, and I just need your advice.
I've always been told and have seen most places have you use A+D ointment lightly spread on the tattoo for the first 3 or 4 days, and then switch to a fragrance free skin lotion to keep it from getting too dry. I found my skin doesn't like lanolin at all, so if you go the Lubriderm route, I'd suggest the "sensitive skin therapy" version as it is both fragrance free and lanolin free. Infection I think is a rare thing, so while it is a risk, you really can't know for sure until a problem comes up.
When I got my first tattoo they told me to use Lubriderm and with my second: Palmer's Cocoa Butter. They both work really well.
