going over a dark tatto to make it lighter??

I was wondering if it was possible to go over a darker tattoo with a lighter color. I got a butterfly tattoo on my ankle about a year ago and it came out a little too dark than what I wanted. It's a dark pink and dark purple. Is it possible to go over it to make it a lighter pink and purple? Or do you have any suggestions for lightening it up a bit? Thanks.
