Ok, off the top of my head. Im am not a tattoo artist so you should probably not be listening to me, but some real tattoo artists in the real world.
Prepare for the long haul.
Work your ass off saving money, cause you have lots of art supplies to buy for the next few years.
Work your ass off saving money so you can afford the amazing tattoos you will get when you hit your early twenties.
Work your ass off drawing and drawing and drawing and getting your emotions out in artwork every chance you can get.
Learn and research artwork and tattoo artists. Find out who is leading the industry any who are the hidden gem artists. most importantly, learn what is a good tattoo and what is an OUTSTANDING tattoo. Your artwork has to be outstanding before you can tattoo outstanding so you will have to prepare yourself for a life of drawing better every day. In tattooing you need to do it the best you can and then some everyday.
Check out the conventions. Meet people. Keep yer ears open.
When you hit your early twenties start getting large tattoos from the best artists you can secure time with.
When the talented quality artists who are tattooing you have seen your killer portfolio then you will probably get very good advice about how to find a proper mentor to teach you everything necessary to tattoo safely and with proper guidance. indeed, your journey has just begun, then comes the hard part.

Thanks guys
yeah, I guess. but you see, everytime I post something it seems to piss someone off. Im not talking politics, I expect folks to be irked at me when they disagree (though, I dont mind if they disagree at all), but Im surprised by how often someone is miffed about what I include or exclude from my posts about tattoos. So when I start giving my thoughts about things like learning to tattoo I feel like I need a disclaimer before some artist chews me out...
