Hello all, I have recently put almost all of my work from the past year or so online at www.mattkerley.com it contains sculpture, painting, and tattoo flash designs. Most of the designs on the site are work that I have gotten tattooed on myself. I will soon put up designs that I have been asked to do for other people. I am looking for an apprenticeship in the atlanta, North Carolina, or Maryland area after I graduate from the school of art and design. please let me knwow what you think of it so far thank you Matt Kerley
Ok Matt you asked ...I will tell....at this point you should be concentrating on improving your art skills including linework and coloring/shading...consider taking some classes at a local college and when you are ready..start working on a kick ass portfolio with PRO quality artwork not just sketches. This might sound harsh but I am just being honest man...you have a long way to go in the art field before you can go to a decent studio and ask for an apprenticeship.. DO NOT give up...work that much harder and show me some much improved artwork....TAz
I do however like the shit out of some of your sculptures and wouldn't mind displayin some in my shops...e-mail me.. [email removed]
I took a peek too. I know YOU may think your ready,,,,but....Id wouldn't jump the gun. I see talent, but think you need quite a bit more pollish.. Id study tat magazines and as many art books as you get get your hands on. i wouldnt say how long...Thats up to you.
I like the zombie guy outline .....go ahead and get that apprenticeship ....find a good teacher. Ive seen alot of uber talented artists never be able to pull off a career in tattooing ....when tattooing the canvas is never the same twice ,it takes a while to get it. Its true................................... its not at easy as it looks.
I have studied at school. I am graduating with a BFA from the school of art and design in North Carolina in a month. I have lived and breathed in the art field for the past three years. honestly, I have only been studying tattooing for a litle over a year now. I do study tattoo magazines old and new alike almost everyday. I admit that I do need to concentrate more on line work. I have posted a few more if you feel like giving it another chance. I will be posting more as soon thanks Matt
I meant to say I have been in the art field in the east coast for 5 years. But I didnt mention that it has been sculpture being as it is my concentration. I have put most of my time in the past five years into sculpture, minor in painting and recently tattoos. but I will get there because I am motivated and strong willed.
Like I said before I really liked your sculptures!!...TAz
I would just REALLY beef up on your drawing skills, as they are the foundation for all art. I would take life drawing classes and concetrate on learning the fundamentals. I would not try to better your drawing skills by only drawing or copying flash. When I wanted to be a comic book artist, every pro told me "don't learn to draw comics FROM comics." That's like making a copy of a copy. You'll already got a great start. You'd be amazed at how far a few life drawing classes will take you. NOTHING beats drawing lots and lots of naked people! Good luck. For those interested in my art, I have many pieces posted on www.inkednation.com/natoman. I'm also looking for an apprenticeship. Nato
I have to disagree with Nato...ANYTIME you draw ANYTHING you are improving your skills.....and if you are going for a career in tattooing what better foundation than familiarizing yourself with tattoo flash??? I do not however advocate drawing ONLY flash and "tattoo " related art ...you need to be able to draw ANYTHING to be a competent skin artist......With your badass skills at sculpture you already have a leg up...I have the people I teach delve into that media also...it seems to help develop not only perception but texture graphics as well. To NATO.....why the fuck are you not Tattooing?...you are a balls up badass on paper and I feel that skill would , in your case, transfer well to skin art...Props on the art my friend!! If I can answer anymore questions about our ancient art for either of you people just e-mail [email removed] I love seeing young people, with the skills you so obviously have ,showing an interest in skin art Peace....TAz of Painted Angel Studios...Missouri
This is a great constructive conversation. I appreciate everyones ideas and insights. I have recently received an apprenticeship. I start monday. I will be beefing up my site with more drawings as that is part of my apprenticeship. I have to draw 10 complete drawings everyday. thanks again Matt Kerley
Thats GREAT Matt!!!...Let us know how it goes!!...TAz
