here are our thoughts from an upcoming article on getting the perfect tattoo. bottom line, wait.
Physical and Emotional/Intellectual Maturity
We suggest a minimum age of 20 years old to get tattooed. In most of the U.S. the legal age to get a tattoo on your own is 18, but let's face it, most of us at that age, although granted certain legal rights, are still developing our personalities and changing our interests more rapidly than when we hit our early or mid twenties. This of course can lead to regrettable tattoo decisions even though the law says we can do it without penalty. In addition to this, many teenagers who are under 18 ask where they can get tattoos with their parents' consent, because in many states this is legal. However, with a few exceptions, most respectable professional tattoo artists are too busy with adults to deal with the headaches of tattooing anyone underage due to the fact of how rapidly teenagers are changing and how fickle they can be (and if you are a teenager reading this, those things are nothing to be ashamed or defensive about--they are normal and healthy parts of the aging and maturation process!). That said, if you look enough, you still may find someone talented willing to work on you, but odds say you will be getting the tattoo covered up anyway when you get older. We would suggest spending the time it takes until your 20th birthday or so learning about tattoos (as well as yourself), researching artists, and developing your ideas for a truly unique tattoo that is fantastic. If you are young and still want to get tattooed, just remember that your body parts should be finished growing, and that your ideas of what's cool will probably change over time. Know what permanent means.
There is a reason the other boards are rude. Your probably about to make a mistake that you will have to spend lots of effort to fix later.
That dragon looks more like a turkey vulture.
I got a tattoo when I was 16. Tomorrow I'm going in to have it covered.
I guarantee that if you get that glowing turkey vulture tattooed, you will eventually be covering it or removing it. Unless of course your emotional and intellectual growth ceases and you're mentally 16 forever. In that case you'll love it.
If you get really into tattoos in the future, you'll be pissed that you wrecked prime real estate with that junk; coverups are more limiting than a fresh canvas -- believe me!
Kris you sound like a nice person but please wait until you are older right now what you think is cool when you get older you will find tacky I was 23 years old and I got a Dragon similiar to the one you want at the time it looked good but as I got older and wiser I notice that I over grew that tattoo and I ended covering it up. Kris no respectable tattoo artist will tag you even if you come with Jesus Christ himself holding your hand to the shop I know I wouldn't please take this in consideration if you need 20 or 25 e-mails to convince your mother to help you get a tattoo that shows that you are still a inmature person and I mean no dis respect with this. Is that you are going on by showing us with this topic how inmature you are or sound please consider a tattoo is like a operation if you don't take care of it you may end up being hurt and there are other factors you may take in consideration tattoo aren't cheap and if you have you depend on mommy to pay for your tattoo you really shouldn't get it. A tattoo should mean something to you do you know what does that dragon stans for or is it because you just like dragons think about it a tattoo should be a thing that tells a story about you or that means something to you or tells you a story etc. Kris if you think that you are going to get at least one person in this web site that is going to back you up in this decision good luck I just don't see it happening I am with your mom No TATTOO for you until you get older. I hope you still feel that way when you grow up about tattoo enjoy life be a kid do rush to get old is not that fun. LOL
I got my first tattoo when i was 16, second when i was 17 and my last two when i was 18..and i already regret the second one so be careful and dont rush into it..then you get addicted like me! Im sure in a few years Ill be wanting to cover mine up and its all my fault..so wait..listen to these people they know what they are talking about!
I decided I wanted to get a tattoo when I was 16. But I waited and now I'm18, and I still haven't gotten a tattoo. I'm waiting until A) I can afford it myself B) I find an amazing tattoo artist who I really trust and C) I am 100% positive that the design I'm thinking about getting is what I want and I'll love it for the rest of my life.
Please wait till you're 18, at the very least. Spend some time looking for the perfect design that really means something to you. Find a great tattoo artist in your area. And then when you're 18 you'll come back and thank us for talking you out of getting that tattoo.
Kris hon i was 44 before i got any tattos . This year was the first time i said ok and tossed caution to the wind and got all 16 of my tats in 4 months. I am still not done will hold off on the lower back and get one on my shoulder done first. Don't rush into this you got your whole life ahead of you. And remember your young and you will need to get a job someday and your tat will need to be covered for most jobs. So don't rush and don't push to get it done. When the time is right i am sure your mom will agree or you will have a job where you can pay for your own tattoo.
Well, I can't say that I agree with the idea of getting a tattoo at 15 or 16. I got my first tattoo on my 18th b-day. That tattoo is soon to be a very large and coverup. I'm lucky that I decided to get heavily tattooed, so the coverup will be worked into my sleeve. I guess my point is wait to get the tattoo. Its for life and 3 or 4 more years is realy no time at all in the longe run. Hell, if I'd been tattooed at 16 I'd probably be stuck with some Limp Bizkit for life or something stupid like that.
and on a side note, Hello to everyone on the board I'm new here so I hope I'm not overstepping my bounds with any of my post
Kim, there are some truely amazing tattoo artists in your area. Tom Strom, Jon Sweet, and Nic Skrade all work outta Uptown Tattoo. Dan Dittmer is great and booked like 6 months out, and Adam Chiodo isnt too shabby himself.
Also, welcome to new folks, you're never overstepping your bounds by letting us know your thoughts!
I'm 18 and I got my first tattoo a couple months after my birthday. I kinda rushed into it and got just a lower back tattoo. It's really pretty and I do like it, but it is kinda generic. I mean just by doing a simple google search you can find all sorts of beautiful artwork that would be worthy of having put on your body. Really consider what you want, and look around first. Because I can pretty much garantee you'll wish you would have got somthing different.
Tattoos are so permanent, that I can understand your mom's apprehension. I am 23 years old, and have gone through approximately 20 piercings, only 5 of which I still have. You are 15 going on 16, give yourself a couple years, search your soul, and find out what matters most to you before you decide what you want tattooed on yourself. Just my two cents, for what it's worth.
I would highly suggest you wait till the age of 28 :)
I know everyone on here sounds like a bore but its coz wev dun the same thing as u!!! I wanted a tatt wen i was ur age and i dun wot u dun and trust me it STILL dont wurK!!!! how is 25 emails from random strangers gonna convince ur ma to give in to u!?!?!?! us mothers are alot wiser than u gi us credit 4!!!! Please kid, Please. Look, you sound cool, so don't take this the wrong way, but nobody on this forum is telling you this is a good idea. Plus, you are a minor. Trust me when I say that You will not be the same person at 20 that you were when you were a teenager. Don't rush into something crummy. Wait, and get something great.
Welcome to tattoonow Ta2edPJ!!!
You just jump right on in there its great to get some new blood...thanks for posting!!!....TAz
hey,
when i was 17 i desperately wanted a tattoo and was constanly drawing different designs id like, but decided to be sensible. i drew a design that i loved, and decided that if i still liked it when i was 20, id have it. less than a week ago i had that tattoo and my mom paid for it too! you will change ur mind loads before you reach 20. im glad i waited.
unless your reason is just as good or better then mine for getting a tattoo at sixteen then you have the right BUT STILL WAIT THAT PLACE IS PRIME
If, at any point in your life, you can look back more than 5 years and not have significantly changed, do yourself and the human race a favor, and "off" yourself.
I am not the same person I was 5 minutes ago, but I do not regret a single tattoo I have ever got.
