Is it true about getting tattoos on your feet???

37 messages · last activity 10/9/2012

I would like to get cherries tattooed on my feet but a tattooist told me that colour tattoos and detailed tattoos on feet are a waste of time as the colour does not hold and the detail fade out thus giving that tattoo a blurry look. I thought most tattoos did this over a long period of time but this tattooist also told that it happens not long after getting it.
I have heard this also. I think it might be because our feet get a lot of wear and tear. Even on the top alot of friction from shoes wearing on the skin. I have seen some beautiful pieces on feet though. If you get it just know you will likely need to get it touched up later on.
ive seen plenty of feet tattoos..maybe go to another tattooer..check out www.stevebyrnetattoo.com into-you.co.uk and www.thefamilybusinesstattoo.com and there's a tattoo convention in october..www.thelondontattooconvention.com
I have a tattoo on my foot, the colors dark blue and yellow. I have had the tattoo for over a year now, wear sandals frequently that the straps rub against the tattoo and have even put the design through sand, sun, and salt water at the ocean for a week, the image is as good as new, you should have no problems, I suggest that if you want a tattoo on your foot, go for it!
Tattoos don't fade or get blurry because of wear and tear on the feet. Tattoos that are farthest from the heart are going to age more noticeably than tattoos closer to the heart. The reason being that your arms and legs have poorer circulation and therefore the the aging process is less kind to the skin on the outer extremities. Hope this helps. If you do get them done...find a good artist that knows how to apply a tattoo that uses solid THIN ( 1-3 needle) lines. Don't let someone go after your feet with an 8 liner or something...it'll look like shit in a couple of years if you do.
I have a tattoo on my foot and have had one for about 6 yrs. And i dont know wtf that person was talkin about it being far from your heart, and it ages more that has nothing to do with anything cuz your face shows the most agin and that is close to your heart. If you take care of your tattoo..when its healing it will be cool..If it does end up fadin you may need ONE touch up..but thats about it.People over exagerate..i will tell you that is the most painfull spot to get one tho
I got my first tattoo on my right foot in March. It's 3 small blue stars, and even though it's small it hurt SO badly. People don't lie when they say that the foot is the most painful place to get one, it def. is. I've had big burly men COVERED in tattoos see mine and be like "How did you handle that pain? I'd never get one on my foot. If you can get one there, you can get one anywhere". Even my tattoo artist said "You want your first one ON YOUR FOOT?!" But it was worth it. People are always commenting about how cute it is and how unusual it is to see one on someones foot. I dont really wear anything other than flip flops anyways (except while at work) so I am hoping that will cut down on my chances of having it fade so quickly. I am def. glad I got mine on my foot!
the skin below the ankles and wrists tend to shed skin at a much higher rate than on most areas of the body so it makes it more difficult for the work to heal properly. Some people have no problem at all but in my 35 years of tattooing as a general rule foot tattoos just do not heal as well and fade quickley. YOU HAVE TO REALIZE THAT EVERYONES SKIN IS DIFFERENT AND WHAT WORKS FOR SOME WILL NOT WORK FOR YOU!
I had my first (and last) tattoo on the top (over the arch) of my right foot 6 days ago. It is a beautiful burning phoenix holding a heart. It was almost as painful as childbirth. I didn't scream, but I was so shocked by the pain that I cursed several times out loud without any control. I handle pain really well and was caught completely off-guard by this. My twin sister talked me into it. She had the same one put on her left foot and seemed to handle the pain SO much better. This was her 3rd tattoo, but first on the foot and she agreed it hurt the most. I was covered in sweat and totally humiliated. It took about 45 minutes. I did everything but pee my pants and pull out my hair. Really.....think twice before you get into the foot tattoo. My artist was totally cool and did a great job. He told me to wash it 4 times a day with an antibiotic soap and to keep lubriderm on it 4 times a day, both, for a week. I'm on day 5 and it hasn't scabed yet. The swelling is gone. I elevated it the first 2 days and put some ice on it (gently) and tried not to wear any shoes or socks. I did put on a really soft velcro flip flop a couple of times just to run errands. I'm real active, though, so have probably been a little hard on it. It's a hard place to heal. But if it heals ok and the definition and color remain, I will be really happy because it looks so cool.
Well I'm going on tattoo number 2.... And as topic suggests... its goin on my foot... its going to be a lillie and some vines ( significant meaning) and I'm goint to cry liek a baby./.. if I dont... cool... if I do... well atleast i admit it, but the after effect, and the hormones that run through your body will be sooo worth it!
Well I am getting both my feet done tomorrow! I am a little nervous but I have been wanting this for years. It will be my 4th and 5th tattoos. I will let you know how it goes!!!!

Holy shit, did someone say that on this thread?? Feet are tricky, but farther from the heart??? My foot healed up near perfect, my wifes been tattooed twice by an awesome artist and the color peels off like a fucking decal. Go figure.
Well, I had both of my feet done last Thursday, and to who ever said it hurt as much as childbirth must have had an easy childbirth, because it did hurt I wont lie but no where as bad as I thought it would be. I think it hurt more the next day than when I got it done tho, kind of feels like sunburn. But they are awsome! I would do it again in a minute! I asked my artist about fading and he told me he has done several but has only had to touch up once. Just depends on the person everyone has different skin, I guess it depends on how well you take care of it when it is healing.
heyy well i just got a tattoo on my foot 3 days ago and it really didnt hurt as bad as some people make it out to be. it felt like a bad rug burn but the pain wasn't at the point where someone couldn't handle it...
I have two tattoos so far & i'm only 16. I have one on my lower back & neck. The one on my lowerback KILLED. I am getting one on my foot in 2 weeks, does it really hurt as bad as the lower back, because i head the lowerback hurt the most?
I have an ankle chain with a pendant and interlocked wedding rings for my wife, and pendants for my godchildren and a claddaugh (sp?) symbol for my friend that died. The chain was done deliberately low on the ankle so it would look more casual and be at least partially visible with jeans. While this has been the most high maintenance tattoo I have, it is by far my favorite. As far as the pain, the foot is complex with its system of nerves. Some areas were very tolerable, feeling no worse than a light scratch. Others, like the Achilles' tendon, really stung. Some spots were even ticklish. Everyone seems to be wired a little differently, too. I was really dreading the bony area, but it was not as bad for me. Bottom line: If you have your heart set on the design and location, DO IT! Most people I know with foot/ankle tats have needed a touch up, then they were ok. Hope this helps. Enjoy your art!

" This post is exactly what I was talking about in the LA Ink thread. People, for no reason at all, saying that the tattoo has a significance. It's not necessary...sometimes you get one just cause you like it. No one is going to think you're stupid because you say you want a certain tattoo and don't immediately follow it with "it means something to me!" True, a lot of tattoos have meaning for the wearer and that's awesome...most of mine do mean something in some way or the other, but I have a couple that I just felt like getting because I liked the artwork or had a good idea for something. People need to get off of the idea that if they don't have a maning for it, it's stupid. What's stupid is picking some gay flash off the wall w/o thinking about it. If you have an idea for something, reasearch it and have an artist draw it up for you. I'm not saying get tattooed w/o thinking because that's stupid, but don't come up with some lame story of meaning behind a tat that's not necessary
Have a tat on my right foot for almost a year now, there are a few holidays in the coloring, but it healed fine. I'd say it hurt me less to get the four inches on my foot than the 1- 1/2" piece a finger length above my ankle (where you'll see a lot of chicks get a butterfly). All part of the same piece, so I could compare them easily. The foot was just kind of a dull nagging prick where as the other part was like shooting hot soup into my muscle. Who cares how it felt to me though, nor should it matter what anyone else says. The pain is different for everyone no matter where you get it, so don't neglect to get a tattoo where you want it because some ass freaked you out. You'll be a lot happier in the long run if you get exactly what you wanted. Some people have a lower tolerance for pain. If you know your one of them, start small and build off of it over time.
I have a tattoo on the top of my foot, and I'm getting one on my arch soon. The first one faded during heeling, but that's because the man who did it did not do it well. My mom and I got the same thing, and both of ours faded right away. We got it done as soon as possible, and now it looks great. I've had it for 3 years now. And I really don't know what people are talking about with the pain. The must have a very low pain tolerance. I have 7 tattoos. The one on my foot hurt of course, but it was not as bad as a lot of people are saying.
3 days ago I had a tattoo placed right on the top of my foot. Did it hurt? Heck yes!!! Did it hurt as bad as childbirth? No way!! I have felt worse pain, but it's all relative to the worst pain that you ever felt I suppose. I did some cussing, a lot of heavy breathing, and I was sweating like a pig, it was pretty bad but nothing I would not go through again if I wanted another one on the other foot. It looks awesome. I have one on my ankle that I had done previously and that was a breeze as compared to the top of the foot. My foot is swollen but the tattoo itself looks great!
I have horses and one of them decided to step on my left big toe last year. My father also died some time ago. I want to get a tattoo that will have something to do with my dad and my horses. So, I thought it would be nice to get a tattoo on the top of my left foot of four horseshoes one with my dad's name in one. I do a lot of barn work and wear boots for a large part of my day. I'm seriously concerned about wearing boots and maintaining this tattoo. I would probably be able to give it a week to heal without wearing boots, having someone else do my work. Any amount of time after that I would have to wear my boot and sock. Is it ok to wrap it in saran wrap when I wear boots or not? If anyone has any help or suggestions of what I should do or if anyone thinks its a bad idea PLEASE PLEASE let me know. You can e-mail me at home.
I recently got a little heart tattoo on one of my toes.... after 1 week, it faded at least 5 shades, and it is now almost completely worn away.... I did not even wear shoes, I wore flip flops... so if you're getting one on your foot, be wary it's a lot of money for it to look good only the first week
I got my first tattoo yesterday on the top of my right foot, 3 lillies, lots of detail and color, and I can't belive people say it's the worst spot. I was prepaired for it to hurt and thought I would cry like a baby but when he started I was like Oh that's it??? So I saw go for it, and that it isn't as bad as people think!!
I have some tattoos on my feet and they haven't blurred at all. I have had my tattoos for about 8 years now and haven't had any issues. However, if you have any doubts I wouldn't get a tattoo, remember it's permanent and if it does blur then your stuck with it forever. Good luck!
my husband did a tatto on my foot last night. I now have 8 tattoos. It was seriously the worst pain I have ever felt. I woke up this morning and almost fell over when I stood up because of the pain. My foot is so swollen it is almost twice the size as normal. I have been researching foot tattoos and have read that your foot can stay swollen for five days or more. If you get one on your foot I would plan on getting it done when you dont have to work or anything. Thank God I dont have class for a week. Although I dont regret getting the tattoo done, I have been wanting this for a while, I am thankful that I dont have anything important to do for a week. I wouldnt recommend anyone getting a tattoo on their foot as their first one.
I just got a black and blue dove bird tattooed on the top of my foot yesterday. Its probably one of the worst pains I've ever experienced, but I've never had any children. It was my first tattoo, and I love the way it looks. My skin is pretty red and sting-y, but its a pain I can deal with. After reading numerous posts, I'm not sure whether to be afraid or not about it blurring and fading... I'm cleaning it about 3 times a day and putting on A & D like 4 times a day, and wearing flats so its open to heal. I'm hoping that with the combination of taking care of it and having a great tattoo artist that it'll stay nice. I don't want to have to touch it up... so wish me luck! haha.
I just got a tattoo last night on my right foot. It is a trinity knot with some initials in it, and it is on the outside of my foot. It is my first tattoo and i didnt think the pain was that bad. I am normally a baby when it comes to tolerating pain, but this wasn't bad. Closer to the bottom of my foot hurt more than the rest, but no more painful than a bee sting. It wasn't bad at all.
I got my first tattoo on the top of my foot. It was really painful, especially for my FIRST tattoo! I have had it for almost a year now and it still looks great, so i would'nt be too worried about fading right away. Though it does depend on the artist, and your body. I am going to get one on my other foot within the month, which would be my third tattoo. And the "if you can get a tattoo on your foot you can get it anywhere" saying is somewhat true. My second tattoo was on my back and it was much less painful than my foot. But i personally LOVE foot tattoos and think they are beautiful so if you want it, go for it!

I know that everyone's pain tolerance is different, but the people who say that feet tattoos are the worse pain ever probably don't have a chest piece... heh. Anyways, I've had a 4 inch full color pineapple on the top of my foot for almost three years now and haven't experienced any abnormally fast fading though having lived in Florida the majority of this tattoo's life I wore mostly flip flops. That being said, a friend of mine got a matching pineapple done at the same time and her's has faded considerably. She however is in the army and her feet have been in socks and boots everyday for the past two years. As for the pain I would have to agree with the person who posted that it feels a lot like a rug burn. (Please forgive me for not remembering your SN) It was by no means intolerable for me and I read a book through most of it, however it was admittedly more than a bit uncomfortable when he was tattooing over the tendon that connects my pinkie toe to my ankle. There are a lot of variables when it comes to foot tattoos and obviously no guarantees, however if you find an artist that you trust that has experience tattooing on feet then you're that much closer to avoiding the hassle and disappointment of a faded, blown out, funny looking thing on your foot.
Hey, I've just got a tattoo on my sole and it was only painful for about 10 seconds when he went over the top of my arch. my guy however did dots and not full lines because apparently it will hold better. Fingers crossed!
I had a shamrock tattooed on the BOTTOM of my foot...it was gone within 6 months. However, I have seen tattoos on the arch that have lasted years.
I have a tattoo on the inner arch of my foot. It is on the side of my foot, just above where the arch of my foot touches the ground when I'm standing. When I first got the tattoo, I was surprised because it didn't hurt nearly as much as I was anticipating - and then, in about 2 weeks, it started to fade drastically. I went to a 2nd artist to get it fixed. He appeared extremely knowledgeable, and told me that in order for a tattoo in that spot to withstand the sloughing of skin, it would have to go deeper than usual, and use a wider needle than usual. (The tattoo is a scrolling line, sort of, so the lines are now thicker than the original drawing.) He proceeded to fix my arch tattoo -- using a thick needle and going "deeper than usual" -- and it was the most painful experience of my life. I nearly fainted. My face went white, my lips turned blue, we had to pause so I wouldn't faint. Even with this, he said any tattoo in that spot would need to be touched up every few years. It is now 2 years later, and the tattoo still looks almost like new. I expect that every 5 years or so it will need an (extremely painful) touchup.
