Hey everyone i am currently looking for a job, and it is the hardest thing ever!!! I have a GREAT resume and have gotten MANY call backs and interviews... But, when they meet me, they look at me funny as though they wish they would have never called me....
Its not the way i dress, because i come to the interview very well dressed in buisness attire...
But the fact that some of my hair is bright red, I have a piercing n my lip and nose ect... and i have tattoos that are visible. This society is very closed minded on the beautiful art work on many people who still have good working ability and are very smart!
I am a high school graduate with honors! And i love tattoos and piercings. Just because of my apperance I should not be looked down upon!
But anyway... I am currently looking for a good job, that is flexible because I am attending school to earn my bachelors degree.
So if you know of anything and they don't mind tattoos or piercings... let me know. you can get back to me at my email.
Thanks again!
Mixie

Mixie ...didn't you think about these things BEFORE you were tattooed and pierced?...Well sorry to say it DOES have a bearing on how people view you...people DO make snap judgements on your appearance.....Don't like it but its true!....Ya just gotta deal kiddo!....Its gettin better though ...just really slow slow slow!
But you keep at it and you'll find a job with a company that isn't so judgemental....maybe!....T
Honestly, if you get rid of the facials, that ought to do it. You shouldn't have to, but I think it would help. I think people should be able to look any way they wish, but unfortunately, in America you are sorta fightin' that conservative Judeo-christian value thing. Cover an many as you can for an interview, TASTEFULLY, because it is a statement that you are there to show them what YOU can offer their company, which doesn't have anything to do with tats or piercings. Do not, however, apologize, or make excuses for who you are. Conservative and polite. At least in an interview situation.
Whether you like it or not, we still live in a society that frowns upon tattoos and piercings as a whole, yes it's wrong, and yes, it's slowly changing, but the fact is, if you want something from this world, sometimes you have to play the game.
There are jobs that you can slip into where you can become a success at what you do with tattoos and piercings, you have to find them. But in all honesty, you really shouldn't be suprised so much, this is the way it's always been. Thinking things out first would have saved you alot of hassle. It's common sense that visable tattoos, hair dye and visable piercings will get you prejudged, whether its a job, relationships, friendships, etc, etc (some people purposely do these things to be "different", but then complain that they're being treated different). I find it hard to believe that you didn't know this to begin with, but if thats the case, unfortunately, you're finding out the hard way. On a side note, I don't know what your interests are, but Tattoonow is looking for an intern. I'm pretty sure tattoos, piercings and hair dye won't affect your status as much as willing to learn, knowledge and attitude would.
hey dude, dont fret...there are several great employers in this country that are tattoo/piercing friendly..do yourself a huge favor and check out the top 100 companies to work for...many of them (whole foods, hottopic etc) are great entry level jobs with awesome benefits and perks and they are totally body mod friendly. also,im not sure about every state because the laws vary, but say for instance you are hired and then asked to cover your body art, you are only obligated to do so if they have a policy in writing and it unbias.(if you have to cover your tats and piercings so does everyone else, including those little nose studs and cute butterfly tats.)good luck.

I have had no problems, being a bartender the tattoos kinda help!
I work in a professional environment and unfortunatly, that keeps me looking very "normal". All of my tattoos are covered when I am at work (one in my upper arm, backpiece, stomach, legs), and I cannot have any facial piercings. It sucks! But it is what I have to do to support my family. Good luck finding a job in an office environment that accepts you the way you are.... and if you find it PLEASE share!
I would love it if I could come across a large sum of money, like the lottery or inheritance where I could have a job of choice. Then I could be me and say fuck the corporate world...but it just isn't meant to be for some of us.
just get the clear retainer pieces for the piercings for when you are at work/at the interview. I have a tongue ring that people don't notice when i'm talkin, so i just make sure they don't notice till after they hire me and need more than an "i felt like it" to fire me :D
and, dude, Hot Topic is not all it's cracked up to me...if you want to make any money, and don't have previous like, management experience, you can't get more than part time hours because it's in a mall and there are no full time employees. I was tryin to work there a year or two ago, and it hasn't changed, i'm in there a lot :P
Think you are the only one? Check this out.... http://www.vault.com/surveys/tattoo/tattoo.jsp
Things that make you go, "Hmmm."....J
What type of job are you looking for?
Ive done quite a bit of professional work (for Honda, Epcot Center, a High School, etc) with highly visible tattoos (hands, neck). I dont know what kind of work your looking for, but a lesson tattooing has taught me is thus. Whenever anyone says no, work 150% harder to make sure you get better and make them regret it. Life isnt fair, but that doesnt mean you cant kick ass at it with enough hard work. And it is true, if you go out of your way to make your appearance drastically different from the norm, then you cant expect everyone to treat you normally.
WHO WANTS TO BE "NORMAL"?
There are plenty of jobs out there just keep a pushin!!!...T
hey Mixie, welcome to the club of not being able to find jobs... wanna hear something strange... when i had just 1 tat (my barbed wire that's covered up now), but it was on my right arm kinda near my shoulder... this was the only one i had and i couldn't find ANY jobs.... and i was presentable and had gr8 resume, etc... but no job in the end except the shittiest ones alive like dishwasher, janitors....
anywho, i now have 15 tats and i am able to find jobs... thing is i can't take them anyways cuase i'm in the mil... but it's strange that i couldn't get one job w/ having 1 tat, but for some reason i got job offers after 15 tats... what's up w/ that? it could be cuase i'm not in my home state (NY).. i dunno.
as for your deal.. i'd start applying at places that don't got probs w/ tat2's.. or when you are scheduling an interview.. before you even show up for it or while you're scheduling it.... ask them their policy on tattoo's... it will save you a trip out there ya know...
Don't work at Hot Topic... from what i heard from many of my friends who worked there, they don't pay alot cuase of the perks they give you.... and they really screw around with your hours... they don't keep you for a long time either.. at least that's how they do in NY...i just heard it not a so good place to work...
here's where i can think of for you to work: Supermarkets (Stock/Cashier's), Bars (either bartender/barmaid, DJ, waiter/waitress, club promoter or talent booker) (some of those branch into the music industry, i don't know if you're into that at all), Skateboard/Snowboard shops (extreme sports shops), Motorcycle shops, Auto Garages, Smokeshops, Liquor stores, New Age Creations (if you have one of those where you are).... that's all i can think of right now... try some places in the mall, or restuarants in or outside the mall.... or even the movie theater...
if you're expecting to work at like a really upscale place, they might not take you solely cuase of your tats... which is sad in today's world... i'm with you, i hate it too... my job history hell, well most of it explains why i joined the army... so i could get paid and start living my life... and moving on most importantly with it...
see the thing is, i got all my tats while being in the mil. anywho, i'm just saying it's sad... it's almost discrimination against us... i wonder if it will ever come to that, like if someone like us will get really fed up and sue and claim discrimination cuase of our ink, etc... i'd like to see it happen if it does... i mean look at this, the military (Army, i don't know about the other branches) started opening the door finally for new recruits who have tattoos visible to come into the mil... and they also allowed us to now get tats that are visible on our wrists/arms and back of neck... they still have their limits, but it's flexible... it's great for me though, i love it...
but i got wrist tats, 3 on each arm... and i know when i got them i was permanently screwing myself royally for civilian job world if i ever get out of the army... i know the world looks down on tats, but where i'm from they look down on tats that are visible mostly wrist/neck tats... i don't ever plan to leave the military.. maybe if i got enough to retire on and live off of, then yeh.. but i don't see that happening anytime soon...
hey, i don't know if you're out of high school or college... but if you're unsuccessful in finding a job, you know you should be good for the military since now we are taking ppl who got tats/piercings... you always got a career w/ the military... but if you do come in, take it from someone who is already in the military... only do it if you really want to do it... me i wanted to do it, but i also had to do it cuase i had no legs to stand on financially... so i had to in order to survive... there's some things i don't like about the choice i made, but i know if i hadn't made it, i'd still be doing my same old shit, and probaly in jail which is where i was heading 2 months before i joined/signed... (long story)..
make sure it's something you want to do before you sign that contract.. and do all the research and ask all the questions you possibly can about it before you change your life and do it.. make sure you know what kind of job you will have an that you will like it before you sign... that's important, cuase you need 18 months of time in service before you can reclass to something else...
good luck on your job search.. and if you decide to go military, email me: [email removed] i can try and help you out w/ questions, or go to http://www.military.com and get an account for talking on their message boards... they're really helpful there.
