In amsterdam, My chinese speaking girlfriend of the time couldnt stop looking at this waitress's nape tatto and laughing. So I got talkng to her and asked her what it was. She replied 'oh its just my starsign in chinese.' I didnt get what was so funny. My girl later explained that she is clearly a chicken in the chinese horescope. This still drew a blank with me so i ws like 'yeah, and..?' she continued: yes, the character her tattooist had picked did indeed say 'chicken.' However, it ws a form of that word that signified 'slut' in modern chinese vernacular. ouch :/
Try chineseculture.about.com. You can find names, phrases and other common words translated into chinese.
I want to get the symbols for daughter, wife, & mother in Chinese on the back of my neck going down. I am worried that the tattoo shop may not have the correct symbols and I might end up with who knows what on my neck. What is the best way to know I am getting the correct symbols?
Hi - I have studied Chinese for several years and have also seen bad Chinese symbol tattoos for several years. It's amazing how many people think their tattoo says something beautiful like "inner strength" just to realize you have the word of something dumb like "ugly dog" tattooed on you for the rest of your life. Honestly, if you don't know Chinese, you will never know if your tattoo is correct or not. Also, if your tattooer doesn't know Chinese, your tattoo could be done incorrectly (perhaps missing a stroke in a character or putting the stroke in the wrong location). I would not recommend you get a tattoo in Chinese *UNLESS* you have someone who speaks Chinese that can verify the tattoo for you pre-tattoo and post-tattoo. You want it to be correct. If you want to see some horror stories of Chinese tattoos gone wrong, go here: http://www.hanzismatter.com/ Long story short - I don't recommend it.
