WOW, where to begin with this one. Heres a start, don't go to a "Tattoo School." There's something called an apprenticeship, get one. I understand this can be difficult. First to find, and second to actually complete. But trust me it's most definitely the best way to learn how to tattoo. Don't just take an apprenticeship with just any Joe Schmo, believe it or not there are a shit load of "Tattoo Artists" that probably shouldn't be tattooing, let alone teaching others what they think they know about the trade. Getting a good apprenticship could litteraly affect your entire life, let alone your professional career. Hate to be a Dick here, but if your having a hard time finding someone to take you under there wing there may very well be a good reason for it. Just because your told your a good artist by friends and family doesn't necessarily make you one. Paying top dollar for a tattoo school may seem like a good idea, and hell there right, you probably will go right out and start making some money. But trust me on this one, you shouldn't be! Your not going to learn what you need to know in two weeks of an apprenticeship. It takes more than a simple want to learn, and some fella willing to take your money, and call you an artist. It's a commitment by not only the student but the teacher as well. IM a student of a 4 week apprenticeship, and trust me I learned under the most ideal of situations (Busy shop, good people around me, and a knowledgeable art background). And I didn't know shit after I started tattooing for money. Most of my leaning took place long after the guy apprenticing me left me on my own to earn 50%. What saved me? People I worked with teaching me, and keeping me from getting in over my head. And trust me its been 11 years and not a day goes by that I don't pick up something new. And NO school is going to leave you with what I was blessed with, great talented, caring individuals surrounding you. IM not posting this to put any one down, or to dissuade people from getting into the tattoo trade. Trust me IM all for more talented people learning this art. Hell I wanna learn more, and that's done by seeing what other people do. But I would like to see quality artists, and good caring people getting into this business. Not some kid who's gotten all tattooed up and decided "Hell, I might as well tattoo for a living now." Wow this subject really is a tender one for me. I wanna go on, but Hell what's the point how many people really give a shit! People are still apprenticing others to run there countless shops, and these schools seem to be popping up just about everywhere now. I guess its up to the people who wanna learn how to tattoo to really decide if its right for them. sorry for the rant, hope you listened, and enjoyed... J.Capobianco Hope Gallery New Haven CT
i agree about going to a apprentice instead of a school.i was tot by THE- tatto danny ,in psl fla . it was the best thing i ever did in my Entire life and something i will never forget (THE BEST TIME AND PEOPLE IN MY LIFE I CANT REPLACE EITHER-I'D TRUST HIM W/ MY MOMS' LIFE!).he made me a pro.there's nothing about the biz -starting IT myself ,THAT i dont know ,or i'm afraid of ,from insurance,TO DOCTOR LEGAL COVERAGES ETC ,DOWN to location ;and, before i was even finished- he had so many connections- they were trying to marry me,JUST to learn the same thing off me! and i'd get pro offers from doctors saying i could share their office and start up ;if i tot them ,and i got repeat customers ;girls and cash and independence and resepct ;thats what you learn from the rite apprentice! ;i can tattoo upside down if i had too .i can make and laminate my own flash;i can draw the most popular tattoos in 2 seconds flat one line! i walked into a studio where his wife had her biz ,in makeup- tattoos and i asked her ,if her husband could teach me ,and whats the cost and ,thankgod he was willing -one on one ;i even scored a home and lived next to him ,for the best deal only a king could get! ;my siblings were so jelous -the biggest mistake of my life was going near family ,after i made it ;home w/ a pool my own tattoo biz and mom loving it all ;an indoor pool and my teachers family across from me as best rite hand friends;and i never planed it that way;its way beyond what they ask for in money ; sounds too good to be true and too good for me as far as my jelous siblings family was concerned too;my siblings would ruin me and ,they did in a second ....so much for blood and money ;but, remember : if you ever find 'an apprenticship"- its as good as a phd ;unbeatable as gold;no school is ever gonna come close;they are more concerned w/ the school and running it and money than teaching you and their personal tattoo rep in the community, understand?they have the schools name on your hanging certificate;not a well known tattoo artist! heres to tattoo danny, his son who he tot as an artist ,daniel ,and his wife, linda fish;top shelf- top draw- first class pro- all the way;be the same ,just do it;and dont try tattoo palors ,w/ tons of booths and lines of tattoo artists either ;they dont appreciate you ;comming in unless theres a shortage,so find a place ,w/ a set up a family a real artist and a sucess story tattoo teacher that you'd like to emulate,be like and live and work like ,and then follow your genius;there's your rainbow ;you'll find your heart and your home too.watch out for family rivalry ,thats all.....
