Kia Ora, I have been told that I should only get a Maori tattoo done in NZ,I am from up North, and am a descendant of the Ngapuhi tribe.I would also like some info or pictures of Tattoos relating /signafying the Ngapuhi tribe thanxs
maori "looking" tattoos can be done anywhere. are you looking for moko or a maori based design. the moko process is different than modern methods.
Having come from North America and going straight to work in a couple of shops here in Brisbane, I was unfamiliar with any maori/traditional or aboroginal stuff that would be acceptable. I asked the owner of the one shop I was at about being true to the genre and he said 'any shit that they like is what I do, I dont know anything about it either and dont care'. I didnt like that answer and it was the start of several arguments we had that ended with me leaving. Another example of differences is what people here think are american indians and the tats of them. I know what an american indian looks like but what I see here remind me of irishmen with feathers on thier heads! LOL Anyway, I then started talking to as many people as I could and the best thing I can recommend is to find a design the suits your needs and take it to an artist for tweaking/advice etc. You can contact me through here and I will help with what I can. Good luck.
i am currently working with www.mokoira.com (palmerston north, but he travels a lot) another good one is www.mokoink.com (auckland based)

I want a Ta Moko done without having to fly home to NZ. Doesanyone know an artist in Oz who can read and interpret the traditional written Maori language. You guessed it. Maori tattoos (traditional) are actually our ttraditional written language. Anyone who kows the language will be able to interpret a maori tattoo just from looking at it. And also should be able to turn a whakapapa into a tradional design. I want to meet someone who can do this as i have very strong ties to my ancestry. I'm not looking for someone who can just draw maori artwork. Any fool can do that. My Ta Moko must have meaning or its a waste of my time and an insult to my Iwi as a whole. Anyone know anyone in Oz let me know. Theartist will have to correctly design the work and then spend up to three full days applying it to skin. Kia Ora Koutou.
There is a bloke up here by the name of Jack Berryman: www.jackberryman.com.au try him.
Does anyone know of any maori tattoo artists in Adelaide, SA? If so then hook me up! I been reading a lot about this Marty dude in Brizzy, he sounds pretty good at what he does, can anyone tell me if this dude has a website? Last resort would be to fly to Brizzy to see this guy if I cant find one in Adelaide. Also, I want to know what you think about getting tattoo'z done outside of NZ...all good or not? Anyone one know how to draw(not just literally draw but draw with meaning)maori tattoo'z? Holla!
I know almost every tattooist in Oz and Aotearoa. The truth about Ta Moko In Australia....Is that its not TA MOKO! I have seen many so called traditional tattooists making common mistakes. Most tattooists are there to sell their victims the illusion of what they think is Ta moko. To the highest bidder. Take a look at your ancestors! You can get a pretty rainbow mowree tattoo on your wrist.... or the real deal facial Maori Ta Moko! If you wanna know who, if your worthy,... maybe I'll tell you

hI ANYONE KNOW ANYBODY WHO DOES GOOD TA MOKO'S IN MELB AREA. The real good guys/gals? Looking to get my right leg done. hope someone can help. Email back if possible!
Hey guys, what you need to look for is a Maori artist or designer not a tattoo artist. You have been going about it the wrong way. We assume a tattoo artist knows the traditional meanings. I am tolled Many Maoris dont even know. A tattoo artist is a dime a dozen they can copy anything but a designer who knows the symbols and tribal meaning is like gold. Check out www.maori-arts.com or www.tikitat.com Tiki Obrien is a Maori designer and artist who has had training in the traditional arts and design of the Maori. He has created thousands of personal designs for clients around the world and lives in New Zealand.
Try: Vince Rangi TAKU MOKO-MAORI INK 32 Loganlea Rd Waterford West Qld 4133 Ph 07 3805 5653 I got an awesome ta moko done there a few weeks ago.
hi there,Marty here i do a lot of maori style work here in aus i have just read some of the things some of the chaps i have tattooed have posted here and thankyou guys it's always nice to know your doing a good job,i am humbled by your kind words, i am currently at City Body Art with my boss Ivo i work for him exclusively in australia and he can always get in touch with me no matter where abouts i am at the time C.B.A is opp the hilton in elizabeth street in brisbane 3012 9777 give us a ring no worries i have been reading on here that a few peps are looking for ta moko this is only wearable by a maori this is not a tattoo that just any jo bloogs can get there seems to be some confusion in aus of what can and can't be done so i will state right here if you like maori style tattoos i don't blame you they are truly a beautiful form of art but be aware i strongly advise against taking a copy of someones tattoo u have seen on the internet to get a tattooist to apply, this is not the done thing as this form of tattoo is highly personal to maori and it will contain there life story present and past these are a people that are connected with there land and people in a way that most will never understand,so on that note if you would like a contemporary maori design please contact us so we can put you on the right track we can still design something for you that is one of not a copy of someone else's tattoo i hope this helps we are an extremely busy shop we have some very heavy hitters here so if you can't get in straight away be patient it's worth the wait ,cheers one and all ,Marty Payne
yes i do have a myspace -martypaynetattoo i think and ,facebook anyone should be able to see the photos marty payne tattoos you should find me under those some photos are a little old 6 months or so i will update photos soon ...tight lines Marty Payne....Tattoo artist/ Machine builder 20 years
Tena ra koutou katoa, Great comments and discussion on Ta Moko. As we all know Ta moko is a traditional depiction of your whakapapa, hapu and iwi. Now how would these great tatooist know this if: * They know all of your whakapapa from this present time back to pre-migration (not just pre-colonisation or pre-internet access) * How would they know the many marae, iwi, hapu and whanau you belong to?Te ingoa whenua, what the pou and the carvings mean in my tupuna whare * For example I affiliate to mainly Te Arawa-Tainui Iwi but my tupuna belong to Ngati Kahungungu and others *That even my kaikorero from all my marae can only connect to my hapu of that marae and to my other iwi. Why? because we grew up with these people and they knew my tupuna. Would a tatooist.
kia ora koe,ko hone mane te wheoki taku ingoa ko ngapuhi taku noho kainga ko au taku mahi, mahi whakairo me ta moko ko ngapuhi whakaro anake it does not matter were you are as long as you no were you come from the art you do does not become tapu until you do things with tikanga mens mata or te puhoro womens chin anything that pertains to old school today most moko is done kirituhi that keeps everyone safe so kia kaha kia manawa nui kua oti
