I'm looking for websites and email addresses of local tattoo places in Memphis TN. I want to get a qoute on a specific design found here : http://www.livejournal.com/users/sketchbookexile/1320.html?nc=2 of just the crest design in black ink at least 4 to 6 inches diameter round, but not the colors or the kanji/writing. I do infact live in Memphis but I do not own a car or drive.
Also can anyone reccodmend a good place to get the design I want done (that isn't Trilogy - nothing against the actual shop, just hate going down the highland strip and near the u of m)? I've got a lot of reccomendations from a friend and now looking for other opinions as well.
Thanks!

I would say to you, All-American Tattoo studio, on mendenhall. 3814 s mendenhall off of winchester by the bowling alley over by where Denim and Diamonds used to be. Ask for Jeremy, tell him Curtiss sent you.. He will treat you fair, give you a good price, on top of all of that he will give you better than expected work.
901-362-8857 the number. hours are to midnight most nights.
But if thats out of your way let me know. I know other people too.
go to Memphis Tattoo Company, just a few blocks from beale steeet, I just had a tatoo done, my very first one by a great guy named James. I have seen others and was always afraid to get one because they all seemed like they were jail house type work,I am very proud of my and have received many compliments, great color, outstanding attention paid to detail, great body art. I will get more now that I have found someone like James he loves his work, and takes pride in it like an artist should.
trilogy is awesome, it's worth the trip..its not like you have to hang out on the strip afterwards or anything :). tony max, ben reese, & joe are all awesome artists (my girl and i just left memphis with fresh pieces from tony). highly recommended.
i hear great things about underground art as well, i've hung out there a bit with a friend but i've never personally been tattooed there. nice people tho.
www.undergroundartmemphis.com david evans is really good.
I have to agree ALL American is the way to go in memphis
Jeremy is one of the best artist in town but unlike the other top artist in town he will give you a great price.I have spent countless hours in his chair and have to say I wish I knew him before anyone else had tattooed me.Claude is also very good but Jeremy does all my work.
Greg M.
Go to All American on Mendenhall and ask for Dave. His work is great.
Ramesses Shadow Tattoo downtown is the only way to go. They are pricy, but you are going to have this on your body forever. Kevin and Shannon both are incredible artists and they have done all of my pieces. The colors they use are amazing and the atmosphere is wonderful.
I've heard good things about Underground Art too, but never personally been tattooed there.
Ramesses Shadow is the best. Period.
Kevin and Shannon are true artists. If you want a Tat, go to the other places. If you want a piece of art, go to Ramesses.
You will have to make an appointment and probably have to wait for a while - there is a wait time. But that should tell you how good these guys are, they don't need the "walk ins", they have enough people that will wait days - even weeks - to have a piece of true art put on them.
Underground Art is by far the best tattoo studio in Memphis. They have been voted #1 by the flyer for like 9 or 10 years. Every experience I have had there has been amazing, they are down to earth and very talented. Their prices are reasonable.
You can see their portfolios for yourself if you don't believe me.
Their piercer Chris is the nicest most professional piercer I have every been pierced by (and I have been pierced by several).
Don't take my word for it, just go by and see for yourself.

Absolutely, Underground Art is the best place to go. Super-nice folks, very clean, fantastic work. I've been to a lot of other shops but this is the only place i'd let touch me.
i am a tattoo artist that just moved from m-town and to tell the truth Ramesses Shadow and Trilagy are the two best shops in that town..and Dave Evens is no longer at Underground art..
I too have been in most of the studios in Memphis and have found Underground Art to be hands down the nicest. Some of the shops listed above were so dirty that I didn't want to touch anything. One of the shops was so unfriendly and condescending, their work was decent, but the vibe was awful.
The work I have had done in Memphis I had done at Underground Art, after much research...and I couldn't be happier, and I have had piercings and tattoos done in cities all over the country.
And I called to find out about David Evans and he will be back at Underground to work part time, apparently he took a break to finish his degree or something.
I think it is of utmost importance for the individual to check out each studio before making such a serious decision. If you don't feel good about the place or the people, don't stay. Simple as that. Their portfolios should speak for themselves.
Underground has a website: www.makingmommaproud.com. Check it out
I found this page looking for a tattooist friend of mine and I just had to make this comment. I am heavily tattooed, from many different artists and I have NEVER asked a total stranger online to refer me to my next artist or studio or piercer. I can think of nothing more silly.
A tattoo is PERMANENT (for all intents and purposes, laser treatment being what it is) and a piercing is an invasive procedure. Why would you look for someone to perform these on you without getting off your a** to do some research? You buy books online and maybe shoes, but a tattoo? a piercing? Give me a break.
Go to different studios. Make sure the place is clean (ask to see their inspection reports). Are the people nice (do you really want an a**hole to tattoo you? do you want that energy injected into your skin and into your art?). LOOK AT THEIR PORTFOLIOS!!! That is the best way to see if the artist in questions style will suit your needs.
In short, it is YOUR tattoo.. (or piercing).TAKE THE TIME to find the right artist for you. It is a very personal and intimate experience. One artist may be perfect for your best friend, but not good for you. Spend the time...do the research. This isn't fast food we're talking about.
I love technology as much as the next guy, but come on...have we really become so lazy that we can't get out from in front of the computer to learn and discover what is right for us? Particularly with something as serious as a f-ing tattoo?
Tim, the first place to start research is online thesedays. You can look at many artists portfolios (or at least their online portfolio which is never as good as photos, but you can learn a lot) and references. I wish I could see some actual tattoos from the artists that have been recommended.
In short, the first part of researching tattoos thesedays is getting recommendations and looking at online portfolios and finding the 1-3 studios to check out. Then check em out in person and see whos the best fit...
I own a tattoo studio in Memphis (for over 13 years now) and I can definitely see the previous person's point...getting a tattoo is a serious decision...one deserving of a little research and footwork. While we get the majority of new clients by word of mouth, we still urge everyone to look through portfolios and make the decision for themselves.
I have met people out who swear by shops that I would not let clip my dog's toenails, let alone tattoo or pierce me...but those shops have their own clientele. It might be a mystery to me...but to each his own.
Tattoo artists who really care about their work don't want to waste their time with a client who doesn't respect the artform, or care about the tattoo they get, that client could go anywhere and get anything and be satisfied. We do get tired of the "fast food" mentality that seems so prevalent these days. Everyone wants instant gratification...and when dealing with something as permanent and personal as a tattoo; that can be frustrating.
The internet is a good place to start searching, but until you step into a studio you will not know how clean it is or whether or not the chemistry is right for you.
Ultimately, the decision is yours and it is one you do not want to regret.

and yes, David will be back with us soon...having expanded his intellect and his artistic horizons.
Ramesse Shadow hands down the best not only in Memphis but entire Mid-South. There are tattoo artists from ALT to TX that have their personal pieces done byt Shannon and Kevin Johnson, owners/operators of Ramasses Shadow Tattoos-- a few blocks from Pryamid downtown-- been there since 90's.
They are so good at their artistic skill level and applying that to the skin (a lot of good artists can not master the tattooing techniques and take a piece from canvas to skin)-these guys can.
Underground Art and a couple of others in Memphis are good, but Ramesses Shadow (shannon and kevin) are the BEST. Nothing against the others who are good, just they are at a higher/different level of skill and quality. Only 100% custom pieces. From the local band drummer, to public figures/entertainment mogals/to corporate execs/CEO's-- these are the guys to see. They are a little more expensive than others but well worth it-- you pay for what you get. As evidence of their successful long term business, they only advertise word of mouth and referrals-- AND they are booked months in advance as a result (this speaks for the quality itself)
Probably top 25 in the Nation!
