Miami Ink's Ami James is a Christo-phobe?

Miami Ink's last weeks episode Ami James won't tattoo rosary beads on a girls leg because it made him feel uncomfortable, it freaked him out. He made it sound like rosary beads are dirtier than pediphila. I think he's a punk. 100% of Miami Cubans are Catholic. And 90% of the Miami Ink viewres are probably Christian. Jesus doesn't say let other people walk all over you and your religion. When are Chritians going to unit and stop taking such B_ll shit?

If a christian artist refused to tattoo satanic images would you consider him to be a "PUNK"?.. Although I too think that Ami is a bit of a flake, as a tattoo artist I believe he has the right to decline any tattoo he doesn't want to do...the problem is the whiney assed WAY he declines.

I think that an artist should reserve the right to tattoo whatever he/she feels comfortable with. For the record miami ink is a stupid show... As far as people walking all over your religeon... If I am not mistake, he is Jewish. Just so you all know the TV show Miami Ink is just an act, the shop is nothing else but a TLC put-up. Whatever you say them say is within a plot. I was at the tattoo convention this month at Marriot hotel in Coral Springs, FL an hour away from Miami and ther eit was a booth of Miami Ink. My Fiance tells me to subscribe for the casting and see what's up. 2 days After they call me and ask me to register online and submit a picture of myself, and the art I want to get (I designed a full sleeve for my right arm that has been waiting for Deano Cook) So I gave it a try. They called me again and ask me to meet up with the producers in their offices on Lincoln Rd an 17st in South Beach. Bottom Line they tell you what you are going to say, what the show you are going to be feature is about, etc. Oh big downer you have to pay for your tattoo!. If I am going to entertain people with my tattoo and not being compensated for being in your show the least you can do is not to charge me. Whatever, if I pay I pay Deano the big bucks and travel to GA. Miami Ink is nothing else but a show with a plot. Although love to what it.

to say the overhaulin girl "works" there is a bit of a stretch... more like looks pretty on camera, asks what they are doing (without having a bloody clue herself).... and gets more people watching the show i wouldnt really compare that to MI, despite the fact its also pretty fake.. overhaulin is just putting on a "host" (eye candy) along with the people who actually DO the work.

If I'm not wrong, Jesus said something to the effect of "people hated me, they'll definitely hate you." Bitching and complaining that people don't respect your faith won't change that. He has the right to refuse whatever work he wants, and the show's producers can edit that any way they want. And its easy to put down Christianity in a culturally-Christian country full of hypocrisy and really bad examples of faith. But its a hell of a lot more effective to... you know.. love people, feed the hungry, be a friend to those who need them, actually DO what Jesus said... than go on an Internet forum and whine about how Christianity gets a bad name because some guy on a show refused a Catholic tattoo. And its a lot harder, too. Grow up and get over yourself. And worry more about how your Christianity is doing than "uniting" against TV media that distorts EVERYTHING it ever talks about..

That show's 15 minutes are up. Sorry, but it happens. They are scraping to put together little snips of "drama" and it's so transparent. I say this is thoer last season IMO. Same with Inked. Carey heart is always "crying abot something" in every show. I know "drama" makes interesting fodder, but CRIMINY, he cries whent he tshirts are not folded correct.

But what he's now developed a serious problem with them, how could this happen...Oh that's right it's TV and it's time for some new drama and different scripts. I think what bothered me the most was the gal who wanted the tattoo. She looked like a deer caught in headlights as Ami was bitchin and moaning. That was some rude shit he was doing IN FRONT of her. Allow me to qualify that a little. I mean, let me put it like this. We know that we are only one life form on one planet, in one solar system, in one galaxy, of hundreds of millions of galaxies, ad nauseum at this point, right? So if you truly understand the hugeness of life, the universe and everything, you will understand that no matter which religeon you are talking about, it is nothing more than a HUMAN belief system set up to help a group of humans make sense of that which is really not understandable. I mean, hell, it’s natural... right? After all, not being able to get a handle on things is a pretty powerless feeling. But the key is that it’s a belief system set up to help one regional group of people deal with their stuff. Which is why, oddly enough, many religeons have developed over the history of humanity to explain the world... because the world doesn’t LOOK the same to the Trobriand Islanders as it does to the Desert Dwelling Muslims, or to the Christians, or Buddhists, or anyone else. It’s ego-centric. So, human beings develop this sense of powerlessness unless they can get everyone to believe what they believe. It can’t be the truth unless it’s the truth everywhere. Right? Cause if it’s not the truth over here, then it can’t be the absolute truth, so people have historically started looking for ways to discount other peoples beliefs, because if these people don’t believe the same thing you do, then your truth isn’t TRUE in capital letters anymore, and the world is out of whack. But the funny part is, all of these belief systems are only good for expressing what’s going on with the HUMAN experience. Your experience. Wherever you are. And, if there is no answer for it, instead of just contemplating the fact that we just may not have the tools to get the big picture, we justify our lack of knowledge with Blind Faith.... Blind Faith... meaning that we don’t care what it looks like, because that answer may not fit into what we’ve decided is the TRUTH. So, Fuck it. We label it Faith, and go out and kill, rape, murder, and do all kinds of other unsavory things in the name of faith which are really nothing more than our sad way of justifying behaviours that have more to do with Natural Selection than anything else. While I personally think any decent Tattoo Artist should have the right to decide what he/she will tattoo/not tattoo and have only watched it a couple times out of curiousity and, well, let's say I wasn't impressed. Even less when I learned it's all scripted and the 'artist' don't actually 'work' there but what perked my interest is the religious aspects/comments. I saw the episode lastnight during their little marathon.... It was quite fucked up the way it was handled.... Garver's bones are fucked up, Ami says he will do the tattoo for Garver, Girl comes in, wants rosary beads that were her grandfathers, Ami cries, Garver tells him to basically fuck off, Girl decides to wait for Garver to feel better, Garver leaves shop,.... Jeeeeeeeze!

Chickie, you really do need to look through many many many artists portfolios... Ami is fine, but there are a LOT of artists out there that are truely awesome. TV is for entertainment not education. Check out the artists that Taz suggested and then go from there! Its a big tattoo world here...

Perhaps, as a Jew and a Zionist, Ami did not want to tattoo a symbol that, for 2000 years, meant death and destruction to his ancestors and beliefs. More Jews have died in the name of the cross and in the name of Jesus Christ than for any other reason in history. The Buddhist tattoo Ami sports, although attributed to another religion and belief system, never had any attachment to the death and destruction of Jews. This does not make him a hypocrite, it shows that he has an attachment to his past, pride in his Judaism and is open minded about other belief systems that symoblise freedom and respect, such as Buddhism. The funniest part to me about the whole thing is that Ami complains that he can't tattoo the rosary beads because he's Jewish. He seems to pick and choose his commitment to his religion. You are not allowed to be buried in a Jewish cemetery if you are tattooed - so just how strictly Jewish is this guy? Seems like bs just to get ratings.... The second funniest thing about that guy is he constantly says that certain tattoos CAN'T be done instead of saying that HE can't do them (I loved the episode when Kat said "I'll do that" right after Ami said it was impossible) aaaah Good stuff.

I don't think Ami James is a punk at all. He is as entitled to his beliefs as we all are. I am catholic and have no problem with his refusal of tattooing the rosary beads. Hey Richard I, I saw that episode of Miami Ink, and I think Ami went over the edge a little bit, but I also think that he didn't really mean to make it sound like he was anti-Christian. Obviously he's really not because the majority of people who live in Miami are Catholic, and the others on Miami Ink are most likely Christian as well. And by the way, if you're going to write something dissing somebody, you should make sure you can spell correctly and write sentences that make sense.

I consider myself a good christian and I have too many tattoos and piercings to count. I believe that Ami James has every right to decline doing any tattoo if he wants. If he doesnt feel comfortable doing something then he doesnt have to. We shouldn't judge him on his beliefs. If people werent so racist then they wouldn't care. And by the way, I love the show and totally support them. They are not "punks" they are just normal people trying to live their lives how they see fit. It is what it is.

It may be a few things as to why he acted this way guys. He was a soldier and some peices of religious jewelry are considered bad luck. He Also came from Isreal, so he may be jewish. He also has the right to reject work, and also the way he flipped out isn't realy something I think we have the right to comment on. Its obviously something deeper that we simply don't know about. Also, producers tend to alter the footage through editing. Its a real shop and all, to an extent. They do work arranged by the p[roducers, they have to do and say certain things, but thats all in the contract. I personaly like the show cuase although it has it's moments, its a new light to show that the tattoo world isn't the cliche of dirtyness, drugs, and bad guys. They are human and will make mistakes and the producers will use it like bait in a shark tank. Its a better show than what else has been shown on T.V. and is helping the Image of the tattoo culture, but yes, they make mistakes too, but hey, we're only human. I like that its helping show that Tattoo's aren't Taboo. Cheers.

I think a lot of folks who have responded to this message have it right. It's all about ratings. A great deal of the show is scripted and edited to create controversy, reactions, interest... whatever. Sort of like the episode that was based around Kat wanting to go out and party and the next day she missed an appointment with a client. It was funny how when Yoji called her at home there was a camera rolling in her bedroom to catch her waking up and acting hung over. Yep just like in one of the other replies to this message, it's all about R.A.T.I.N.G.S.

Ami is hot and very talented. If something is on T.V. then it probably has to be semi-staged, but if any of you that claim the show blows, actually watched it, you would know that not everything can be staged. Tattoo artists have every right to deny a tattoo and if a person does refuse to do one then who the hell are you to judge. This forum should be called "The bash Ami blog." I own a tattoo shop in upstate NY, I know how it is with customers and with the artists. I have just recently got rid of my head artist because he wasn't doing what the customers wanted, just what he wanted. In this case though it is different. Ami, you are in the position that you can turn away a tattoo. I believe you have the right to. Reguardless what your outlook is on religion. It has to feel right to the artist. In my case we are a new shop in a very small town and in order to make money to survive we are not in that position. If we were I would agree to turn down customers that the artists didn't feel comfortable with. At times we do have to send customers away because the artists in my shop are pretty new. So what we do is we refer them to a shop that we know will take care of their needs. As we would and they will get the same quality of work we would do. Nobody in this world is perfect or super heros so at times we are unquailfied, For now! Like I said we are still learning as we go. Rosary beads are found in nearly all religions: Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, even Judaism. Its just a string of beads to count prayers on or a string of beads where each bead can remind you of a different prayer. It means different things to alot of different peeps. Yea it's pretty annoying to hear ther stories. Not everyone who gets a tattoo has some deep story behind it. It's so bad that people now who come to me and ask about getting a tattoo automatically start on some story to let me know the symbolism behind it. I'm not a tatttoo artist I just have a lot of tats so naturally people I work with come ask me when they want to get one. Your tattoo should mean something to you, but maybe you just like what it looks like on you. I don't need a sob story for each one.

Regardless of whether or not it was scripted, would anyone really want to get a tat of someone who made it clear they do not want to do it? I'm not implying any professional would intentionally fuck up a tat because they didn't like what it stood for, but obviously, their heart would not be in it. If I asked for a tat and my artist said they weren't comfortable doing it, then fair enough. I have meet countless people who think how Miami Ink is, is how tattoo shops are. While you should have the comment sense to realize it is A TV SHOW, they don’t! So when people see a tattoo artist treat the client like shit it dose not look good for the rest of tattoo artist whether you want to think I or not! I did see this episode and I was pissed at how he treated her. I don’t care how much money you have you don’t talk to people like that, and she was not a bitch to him. Jews can get tattoos in Reform and Conservative Judaism (the two main movements in the US... Reform allows the jewish law (halakha) to be non binding as our society is changing, so is it not impertive you follow all mitzvot. Conservative pratice basically tells you, that its not very jewish, but they cannot forbid anyone from participating in synagogue pratices or refusal of burrial in a Jewish cemetary. So Ami maybe looked down upon by other Jews, and isn't adhearing to a strictly Jewish lifestyle...but can't be too criticized for having tattoos...even many more conservative rabbis out east say tattoos not in memory of a deceased are ok. As for the episode...I think it was fine he refused, but agreeing with others, its how he refused.

If you have flown or are thinking of flying to Miami Ink for a tattoo vacation, you might want to consider flying to New England next October where 60+ of the worlds finest will be tattooing in one very nice resort in the hills of western mass during peak leaf season. rooms are only $109 a night, and the 2 and 3 bedroom condos are really really nice (some even have bunk beds!).
