I went to my tattoo artist on Saturday. I wanted to get my name tattoo-ed on my ankle. When we finally got to talking about the price, he said it was going to be $80! I freaked out. The design I wanted was 9 letters in a very simple font that I had brought in. He didn't have to do any planning, just tattooing. I could understand if I had wanted some huge old english letters, stretching across my stomach. What I wanted was in one color, and a very simple script. The tattoo that I have gotten there previously cost me $40 and it included way more work and detail!
What is the typical price for tattooing names?

Dont be cheap with your tattoos. Its inpossible to price a tattoo over the internet, but $80 for a tattoo around your ankle that will be there for the rest of your life sounds completely reasonable to me.
Hey there, most shops have a minimum charge of $40. this mean's that even a simple line, or 1/4 inch flower is gonna be that price. What you consider a simple piece may actually be quite difficult to pull off. $80. for a name is far from unheard of. As for the more difficult old English rocker across the belly, your looking at more like $200-300. Quite a difference in price.
Tattoos cost what people charge for them, some people are a Hell of a lot cheaper than others. Keep in mind that when it comes to price shopping let the buyer beware, and if you make a poor decision based on your pocket book, than it's your skin. Most people will put more thought into where they'll go for lunch, than the place that will leave a mark on there body for the rest of there life.
Basically what IM trying to say that the price should be secondary to finding a talented artist that you not only trust, but like and can get along with. Getting the tattoo is half the experience. If you can't afford it, than don't look to get it done cheaper.

Ok
you pay for the talent the person doing the tattoo posesses
I dont bitch about the price i usually ask for an estimate on the piece I`m getting
I have done tattoos for my friends and i dont really care what they pay me as long as they pay me
I am a professional artist that has tattooed on and off for the last ten years, not pro but oneday..... sighs
well I close with
if you have to ask how much
you probably cant afford it

I hear what ya'll are sayin' and I think I may have paid the $$$ if he had been up front about the price. Besides, I didn't get along with him. He was utterly rude and acted as though my request was a burden.
I guess in the long run, it is better to pay for quality work. I just want to be happy with the tattoo and the experience.
Thanks for all of the answers guys!
Hey I hear ya there, The experience is half the fun of getting a tattoo. If your not crazy bout the guy tattooing you than that will reflect on your feelings about the tattoo.
Best of luck in the future.

yeah, its njever fun to get tattooed by someone whos rude or put out. Where abouts do you live, maybe we know a tattoo artist who's good, and nice!
The price of tattoos go by the size and location. The larger the tattoo the cheaper the price. When you are asking for a smaller tattoo it requires more detailing.
That's some clever Vulcan logic, sallysue. I asked my artist about a backpiece, he said it was so big that he would be paying me $50.
hahahahaha.
