Just a question for anyone interested in jumping aboard. I am a big fan of skulls, and the style I like are what you'd typically see in the late 80's/early 90's types, such as Filip Leu's, Gill Montie, Inker, Paul Musso, Jack Rudy, with the creepy eyeball looking at you and the very characterized jaw and cheekbones, and of course, some smoke flowing around it. What style would you call these skulls? They're not what I would consider New Skool because of the not so cartoon-ie craziness, they're definitely not Old School Sailor Jerry/Rollo type, they don't fall into realistic since there is a slight fantasy type of element there. Is there such a thing as Mid-School?
Let me know your opinions on this. This can go for other designs as well, roses, etc. I just used skulls as an example . thanks

Good question K-man!....I don't have a clue...What did we call it during those years?...Oh great ...something else to keep me up at night!!!!...THANKS!!!
well guys it's neither old or new skool
basically every artist has thier own style of skulls.
then some artist try to copy those styles.
gill montie is a king of skulls.
but i even draw my skulls in this un named style.
Funny you said definitely not "Sailor Jerry/Rollo" style because I do consider what you described to be most recognized as from coming from Michael 'Rollo Banks' Malone......I'm only at the beginning of my studies of the different styles and contributors to the different trends and I'd welcome being put in my place if I'm wrong, but at the moment I do consider what you described as "rollo" style. and given the time frame...it does seem to fall into that transition between old and new s(k)chools
Most of the Rollo stuff I've seen was around '80-'81, and his style wasn't quite what I was thinking of at that point, but it definitely could have transformed throughout the years, from what I remember, the very early '80s stuff was very old school looking, so I apoligize for any confusion.
Yeah, I kinda do my skulls in the same way as mentioned as well, they're my favorite, always have been.
TAz,
I think in your day they called it "Pre Skool"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
