Old Doc Webb

I have three tattoos from Doc webb in San Diego, Ca from the early 70's. I can send pictures if you want them.
I had ONE small tattoo done by Doc Webb in 1969. I was just transferred to S.D. from Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, and wanted a good tattoo. Someone aboard ship told me about Doc Webb's in downtown, and one night I found it, and had a "Dove" with a "PEACE" banner added to my right forearm. Doc was a little inebriated, and left the tail of the dove unfinished, so it actually looks like a barn swallow rather than a dove. It's too faded to get a decent picture of it, but everyone who's seen it likes it! I'm not certain it was actually Doc Webb who did the work, as the web photos of Doc portray a heavier figure than the man who did my tattoo, although I was not drunk or stoned, and remember that he introduced himself as Doc.
I got my first tattoo done by Doc Webb in April of 1980 during boot camp liberty. It's a panther and the flash can be seen in a Youtube video of Doc Webb at 2:17 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tfh2JeaO_U It's the second panther at the top from the right. I also have an eagle with the words Free Bird under it that Doc Webb did.
Had my first on done at Doc Webb's San Diego in the late 70's. Can't really remember who did the work, but it's held up pretty good over the years.
"Doc" WEBB, is a legend to many of my fellow young boys.
He had his "notorious" tatoo shop, near the NE corner of Santa Clara & Georgia Street, in Vallejo, California.
Vallejo was a "navy town", because of Mare Island Naval Shipyard. He primarily serviced THAT crowd. But, The City of Vallejo made his business life "difficult", because of the changing times. The City felt that his business was an eye sore & a detriment to "wholesome youth"(?). That whole business area, was razed in the name of "progress", in the late 50's-early 60's. Vallejo forever lost it's architectural soul, because of it. But, that is a seperate subject.
I accidentally stumbled into his 5th Street tattoo shop, in San Diego (1971?). That now gone shop, existed in the now exclusive "Gas Light Quarter". I remember at the time, feeling "familiar" with the surroundings, eventhough I had never set foot in the place. Then, I noticed a large collection of dusty & faded City of Vallejo business licenses, tacked around the high wall.
It was only then, that I realized where & WHO the cantankerous old coot before me, was! (I wish, I had my camera!)
I volunteered my youthful background. He was unimpressed! And, did not indicate ANY interest in reminesing about Vallejo, California!
Anyway, this is my partial recollection, of the late great "Doc Webb".

I was 16-17 years old and went to San Diego on Easter break 1972-1973, I wanted to rec a tattoo and did not know where to go, I believe I asked someone on the street and they recommend Doc Webb. I believe it was Doc Webb that actually did my tattoo. He would not put in on my hand, and we settled on the shoulder, Right shoulder, a rose, as the movie Cabaret was popular. I have had the rose recolored and would love to visit Doc Webb studio to see the original flash for my tattoo on his wall.
Hello Tattoo brothers and sisters, I too had 2 tattoos done at Doc Webb's Tattoo Studio in Downtown San Diego when I was stationed at 32nd St. Naval Station in 1977 to 1979. If my memory is correct he had one of those old indian carvings outside his shop. I used that for a landmark when I went back and showed other shipmates where it was. I am still getting tattoos and nothing like old school art with history and stories.........
hello all I am John Gunkel Jr. my grandfather was Trader Jim he was the one that did alot of the tattoos at Doc's shop I knew Doc verry well and only wish I was old enough to have gotten a tat from him
I have several tats by Doc Web - I was a truck driver and when in San Diego went to see Doc Web.

I was never tattooed by Doc Webb but some years ago I purchased some of his equipment from his grand son. Machines, ink, power supply, and photos of him using them.
After 35 years in the tattoo business I am now thinking about retirement I have considered selling the set.
If interested, call me.

I had a butterfly on back left shoulder done by him in the 70's. I was leaving San Diego, going back to New Mexico, and wanted a tattoo to commemorate my stay in San Diego. My friend's brother was stationed there, and he told us Doc Webb was famous for the best tattoos. So that's where we went. I remember his calm, cool attitude. How nice to think of that experience again.
I had a tattoo done by Doc Webb while stationed at MCRD while going to communications school in 1963.It still looks good.A friend who just came along to watch got a massive Eagle,Globe,& Anchor. My U.S.M.C. tatto was $4.00
i remember old doc webb well. i worked for al orsini sr. in the next shop down 4th st. from doc's shop. this was in 1976-77. he was an excellent guy. always friendly & always seemed happy when i came to visit.
I have one tattoo on my leg from Doc web. Got it after he moved to a new location in San Diego, from his old pace accross from the locker club on main street. He was getting very old at the time, and it reflected in the very heavy lines of the tattoo. He had another tattoo artist in his shop at the time named Alada if I remember her name right, that did a really good tiger tattoo on my chest. More modern clean lines, nice colors, and is still on of my favorite tattoos. Really only got my tattoo on my leg was to get a piece of history on me, since my first tattoo was by Lyle Tuttle in San Francesco in 1974.
Hope I provided some information for the history of the Old man of San Diego in Tattoo history.
I used to explore downtown San Diego when I moved there as a teenager in 1972. Walking by Doc's shop was always one of the highlights of these walking tours, and I recall that he had prominently displayed in his shop window a certificate of appreciation from no less than the Commandant of the Marine Corps!
I have 3 tattoos done by doc webb roughly about 30 years ago. He was also an amateur photographer , he was a great dude
My name is Ed and I had a tattoo of Speedy Gonzalez done by Doc Webb in 1970-71. I was attending Navy Radioman "A" School at the Navy Training Center in San Diego. Pretty cheap back then and Doc Webb was the "sailor's choice" and came highly recommended.
