Ya mon, but what's with the grammar ladies?
oooh grammar questions!
The short of it is, that most people in the generation below mine, or at the very tail end of it have problems distinguishing between formal and informal settings. For instance, an email to their professors would have the same informality, same grammatical mistakes as an email to their best friend. Now a message board is a murky area, but since I'm in no mood for people to call me stupid I keep to some level of grammatical accuracy, even though I have run-on's and incorrect punctuation. This is really becoming an epidemic in alot of high school and elementary schools where alot of my friends are doing their professional internships. They're constantly bogged down by having to reinforce over and over again that you have type "you" instead of "u" or are instead of "r" needless to say this has alot of other implications because if you don't identify a word properly how can you learn to use its cases correctly etc. It used to be that the common mistakes were incorrect use of homonyms or fragments, but now it's a mixture of that with IM speech and l33t. I'm really interested to see what happens when they graduate and attend college, from a pedagogical standpoint anyway. The first batches of these kids will be freshmen when I'm leaving.
Anyway, I think that was a pretty thorough nerdy hijack of this post, but I think it helps to explain your question Al? Also, Cynthia Selfe's book really does a nice job of talking about the role of grammar, rhetoric and poetic in the technological age, which would even further answer your question and it's a pretty interesting read.
ahlyn
Ahlyn, nice work on the grammer in today's generation and below. If you think that what you are reading on these posts are hairy you should try to watch someone communicate on World of Warcraft...long story...
As far as the topic of originality in tattoo's, it goes without saying that typically this first words out of someone's mouth that walks into a shop is, "I know what I want, but I want it to be different."
Research of the style of tattoo, the design that you want is a big help.... We can't read minds when you give us sentence fragments such as, "It's like....well you know that one....kinda tribal....fairy....but not really."
Origionality is in the eye of the beholder.
...and I am already apologizing for the gramical errors! HA!
Ahlyn,
Although I can't help but feel that you are getting down on me for my comment, (which is fine) I completely agree with everything you said and love your post! It's people like you, with explanations like that, that help break down the stereotypes about people with body art. However, if you'd really like to know what happens to those people when they get to college, I can tell you a little bit about that since I am the Director of Visual Communications programs and a Professor at a University system here in Denver. I can tell you... I spend more time trying to correct that garbage than I do teaching the skills they'll need to be good designers. Unfortunate, but the answer to your question is... it isn't pretty.
Yeah guys...thats all well and good,,,but isn't the real shame in the fact that a lot of these people truly believe that they are communicating in a proper manner?..TAz
hiya, to ignore the intelectual conversation of grammer and rhetorical questions...
following my last post i would like to say that j-werk ur absolutely rite, i think that as much as i try to differ from everyone else i know that there is no way at all that i can be completely different however if i like it and its pretty ill get it...
walking into a tattoo parlour u have to be ready with the design you want i already have my next one designed out but its based on other designs that i have seen..
originality is in the eye of the beholder as is beauty and the right to remain individual... lol...
however when it comes to the place on the body to get tattoo'd there is no way one person can differ from another..
another thing tho i have used incorrect grammer in this post i am not and never have been silly enough to use it in my exams i am an old english student and passed with flying colours...
anyone who cannot teach proper english to students who use slang if you like in important documentation should not be allowed to comment on what happens to those that use that sort of jargon on a simple thing like a post site...
i apologise to those who do not like the way this english lassy talks...

That's an affirmative Tazzy....
Al-
No, not trying to get down on you at all, your question just reminded me of my Applying Writing Theory course and a presentation we had on just that idea. It's always nice to see theoretical connections in reality. I'm still in college, and I haven't really noticed too bad of problems as of yet when correcting lower classmen. It's sort of a bad habit I suppose, going for quantity instead of quality. Yes, you can type the message faster, but in the eyes of almost everyone in the population you're an idiot. I'm not any different, I kind of l33t it up on MMORPG's and the like, but kind of in a derisive sarcastic way, still, I do it alot and woot has permanently entered my internal vocabulary.
Im sure there is a grammar forum on the web somewhere.
Carrie, thanks for the post and the input. Sounds like you use your head for not only your classes but your tattoos and that is always a well advised course. Send some pics of what you have done and this new one when it's finished so we can see what's going on over yonder. Just click on my name above to e-mail them...I think english lassy's are just duckie anyway!....J
