Before you say go talk to your artists I trying to get a bit of info so I can have an intelligent conversation. I'm going to someone who books atleast 6months in advance so I'm sure he would appreciate me having done some research
I am getting full color portraits of my sons (a bit cartoony) I would love to place them on my forearms but I teach in an elementary school. I don't mind the students' reaction--they see their parents do so much worse ex. smoke. The reality of it is it would cause just too many issues I currently don't have the time to deal with.
My outside upper arms are taken. My options are
--inside upper arm
--side of my leg (I'm not that hairy but I would keep it shaved)
--chest (not sure if my wife would mind her sons staring at her at certian times she says it wouldn't bother her but if it does it's already too late)
I don't see the back as an option as it is meant to be something I can easily see and smile at
Any opinions based on how well those areas heal? show color?...
placement--sorry it's a little long

RIBCAGE , that would rock. Also the outer part of the upper thigh , course I think it looks better on women. But it takes a real man to do the ribcage lol.
Oh and the ribs give you a much larger area to work with as well. more skin more detail huh?
If you want them on your forearms, then you should get them on your forearms. If your good at what you do, you will still have your job and indeed, people will respect you for wearing great color tattoos of your children on your arms. To hell with reality TV, we need good smart people to wear highly visible quality tattoos to change things.
Or ribs.
If you want them on your forearms, go for it! You can wear longsleeve shirts in class.
