poor boyz traverse city MI

43 messages · last activity 4/9/2012

Anyone out there familiar with this place? im going on a trip to traverse city and i have heard they do decent work. it has to be perfect, it isnt crazy big or anything, but it is, like most are, very personal. it also has to be done as a walk-in because i want it but i dont want to wait and im only there for the weekend. my guy usual has like a two week back wait and im to excited. does poor boyz do good work? thanks mike
I've never heard of them, but expecting to get a walk-in on a shop thats got great artists is somewhat of a longshot, you should make an appointment with them so you can get in at the time you want.
I too have never heard of 'em but that doesn't neccessaily mean anything, since tattoo shops are popping up like video joints everywhere. But I would caution against rushing into it just 'cuz you don't want to wait for something you're going to wear for the rest of your life. At least once a week I cover-up or at least rework something someone rushed into because they didn't want to wait or make an appointment for. I did notice they don't seem to have a website which, nowadays makes me wonder 'why not? Check the place out very carefully and make sure to see work they've done. Do not allow your impetuousness to get it cause you to make a mistake. If you do get it there, let us know how it came out...Doc
I had John (owner) hit my elbow with an original spider web design... It looks great, he works with his wife there in the shop. Very clean and sterile environment. Good artest... call ahead for apts... hes busy... there is a another guy in down town TC Rex is his name. T-Rex Tattoo.... He does great work to... between the two you can't go wrong...
I've never heard of the shop either personally, but insisting that it be a walk in appointment is kind of a far stretch, especially on the weekend. I'd be sure to call ahead for the appointment so you don't get your hopes up and get let down :)
I've heard of them.. and have heard that they do some strong work. But I personaly have never seen anything from them. you said you are going to travers city for a vacation? where are you origionaly from? I can recommened some killer arttist in the Utica, sterling Heights area...
i live here in tc. jon at pour boiz does good work. i have some from him and so does my husband. t-rex was shut down. there is 2 other places that i have seen awesome work come out of: perfect tattoo and collective ink. at collective ink jeremiah is awesome but is booked for months. i dont know anyones names at perfect tattoo but i have seen some really nice stuff. hope this helps. sorry if you didnt get this in time.
This place is awesome!! John does great work- he freehanded a male lions head on me that is sweet. He has been doing tattoos for 20 some years- I highly suggest getting work from John! I'd call in advance and get an appointment though and talk to him if you want a custom piece... it took him a week to get mine drawn out... he gets busy.
The work on the site is bad. pourboiztattoozandbodypiercing.com xstattoo.com creativestains.com
no don't go there i got a tattoo there and its awful so did a friend of mine i recommend collective ink they're really good but poor boyz is a definite no. oh and buy the way i live in tc
I actually got my Tracqus done there and they are super nice there. Very clean, I felt like I would have been sitting in a doctors office it's so clean. My friend also got her tattoo done there and the guy did a really nice job. I don't remember his name but it's one of their associates not the owner who did hers. It turned out really good and they are very professional about everything. They do take walk-ins but I know for my friend she made an appointment.
yes they do very good work. my sister got her belly button pierced there you'll love it

from my experience pour boiz is overpriced and the tattoo i got there wasn't even what i wanted. i paided $200 for a butterfly that you can't even tell what it is. if you want to do a walk in, i would go to perfect tattoo in interlochen. i've gotten 3 tattoos from there and they all are perfect. that and they are very reasonable with their prices. if you do decide to go, i would suggest going to BINGO. he's the one who has done all my tattoos besides the blob that the guy at pour boiz did. peace out!! and i hope you take my advice. ~buttons
I first got two of my tattos at Perfect Tattoos and the price was ok but the work not even close to what John can do. On both of them there was spots that he missed and i had to go back to get them touched up. When i was ready for my next tatt my girl told me to go see John. At first i didnt want to but what the hell i went and checked it out. WOW!!!! What a difference. I dont think the place could be any cleaner. For those that been to Perfect we know that it kinda looks like a dump. Poor Boyz has way more pictures to choose from if you dont know what you really want. When John finished my tattoo lets just say that it looked way, way better than i expected it to took. I was very pleased cause this tatt ment something to me. Some people might say that they are little over priced compared to other places, but you know what they say "Its not the quantity, its the quality" right haha.
i just got my nose pierced there 3 days ago and it was fantastic! marie was a sweetheart and made sure i was comfortable, she went over all the do's and dont's and she made sure i knew what was going on. The place was extremely clean (because she's a nurse) and she showed me everything before she used it. I 100% recomend poor boiz for piercings!!

yeah, they do amazing work and its extremely clean and they do take walk ins, the owner is really friendly and its usually not very busy
that site is no longer, i have went to that site two different times and it says its not available. faith
I have John is a great guy and he does a great job. He always says that his reputation is on you... So he makes sure that it is nothing but the best. He did my boyfriends tats and they had such great detail. My boyfriend got our daughters original foot prints from the hospital on his forearm and our second daughters hand prints on the other forearm. They turned out great. They are also very sterile and clean.
i have known john for a while and he does awsome work hes down to earth good priced and he does real good work i have 2 tatts from him on my fore arms and i get told every day that they look awsome so go for it and let him ink u hes the best
I have been to poor boiz for my tattoo, nose piercing and belly button. John did a great job, as did Marie on my piercings. The place is very clean and professional. My sister has also had two of her tattoos there and John has fixed one for her that was done by someone else. All turned out fantastic! If you can't get an apt. there I would definietly suggest Jeremiah at Collective Ink downtown because he also does great work!

you do know that it is illegal to tattoo even yourself without a license in grand traverse county.??..be careful about advertising the fact that you will be tattooing in Taverse City at any given time, someone may let the health department know and shut you down, take away your machines...fine you etc.it's worth $500 to them if they catch you.....
I've never gotten a tattoo from them, but I've had a lot of piercings done through them. If they tattoo like they pierce then you'll be in great hands. They are very professional and very clean. They're just an all around decent place. I would highly recommend them.
Pour boiz is AWESOME. I have had at least 5 piercings done there and Marie is just so awesome. She is so knowledgeable and tells you exactly what to do. I have never had any of my body piercings get infected and I believe that is because of how much she informs you. Also there are times I have been in there and she updates on new care information. So she stays updated with the most current way to keep your peicings clean. Also I have gotten a tattoo from tim johns assistant) and it turned out amazing and was not over priced. I took a chance yesterday and got a tattoo done at new addiction tattoo instead of pour boiz and it turned out HORRIBLE! And guess where I will be going once this is healed and getting it fixed? That's right to john at pour boiz. So do yourself a favor and just go to pour boiz first and dont waste your time and money anywhere else!
ya know ive never been there. i always said id never let him touch me ..its kinda funny thsi was maybe 12 years ago maybe longer. the work i saw was bad..but i gotta tell ya after tattin for as long as he has now he does some awesome work id really have to say some of the best ive seen not just in TC either hes a true artist now . i just moved back to MI from Tampa where most of my ink was done . my tat guy refuses to move up here LOL..i will for sure go see this guy :-)
John does great work but is busy so you'll definately need to call ahead. They are a little pricey and expect several sessions on a big tattoo because they'll only go a couple hours generally. They are very clean and polite, very professional!
John did a rose on my back in 1994 when he was a scratcher I think. I lived in T.C and seen him work at another house. My tattoo was pretty rough but happy to hear that he is doing good work now but I don't think I'll go there. Went in the place(Poor Boyz) about 7 years ago or so, he remembered me but yet wanted to charge me for the work to fix and finish his own work. He's a nice guy and I do remember him saying to me to "never let go of your art, always sign it" I took a pic I drew to Don at Riverhouse in Interclochen at the time and never got my picture I drew back from there. It was a nice tiger pic so, I heed Johns advice.
yea. they are good, my dad got some of his tattoos from there.
I have had 29 consecutive settings with John and I will have my 30th next week. Since I have seen John, his place, and staff on a weekly and sometimes twice and trice weekly for the last few months, I have gotten to know them quite well. The place is very aseptic, friendly and inviting. The staff is professional in thier dimeanor and quality is of utmost importance. They know that thier art and canvas that it is compiled on is life long and in such convey a very serious dedicated works. John's artistic value, experience and professional advice is awsome. I have a chest piece that my wife drew up, her, John and I disected this piece and came up with a one of kind work of art that fits me, my chest and is superb in quality detail and workmanship. John's parlor is atypical for the steriotyped tattoo parlor. It is a clean pleasant and professional place. I have been asked, and also it has been recomended that I show my piece in contest. I cannot say enough niceties about Pour Boiz Tattooz. It has been a pleasant memorable experience that I will hold dear. I will have to have my wife come with another piece soon to continue my weekly talks with Pour Boiz. Can't just have one. Thanks for the art, and fun.. Best Regards: ..joel...
yeahh the guy does pretty good work. im planning on getting one done there shortly

03/19/2010 I just wanted to follow up on my last post. My chest piece is still vibrant and looks like the day it was done, minus the minor redness. I still very much recommend Pour Boiz Tattooz.. As soon as the boss allows more allocations to my cause. :-).. I will seek a new piece of similer size. I am looking to get a full sleeve on both arms that compliment and go with my chest and back piece. I would like John and Tim to do these as both are very talented and have passion for thier work. See ya soon.. ...HFND...
Simply AWESOME! I have wanted a Tattoo for so long and I was always intimidated and chickened out. I am not well versed in body art but I did my research and walked in - yes walked in. As luck would have it - one of John's appointments was a no show so he took me in and reassured me about everything. The experience was the best I could have imagined. My artwork is spectacular and John customized it perfectly! Every guest that walked in was welcomed like an old friend and above polite. Both John and Marie are the real deal and I can not say enough thanks to them for making me so comfortable. They also teach as they go and explain every process. In the end - I am so happy because every other parlor etc - that I walked into - treated me like garbage because I have a very conservavtive appearance - John and Marie did not care. Plus - John is FUNNY! If this is your first time or you are a veteran with Ink - HIGHLY Reccomended!
Marie is a registered nurse and frankly is the ONLY person I let peirce my kids. She is patient and explains things very well! John is fantastic in the tattoo department, I have two by him and he is the only one I have frequented and sent clients to, no I don't get any kick backs, He is an amazing artist. Some of his work has been shown in magazines on Shane Whipp, I would post mine if there was a way to do it. I took him a concept and outline, he did it exactly how I wanted it! I will ALWAYS recommend him. Calling ahead or stopping in with artwork before you schedule does help him get into your head. The entire staff is great, sterile, down to earth and relaxed.
I have gotten two tattoos from john. I think that the prices are fair for the work that john does. I think that if you want a bargen tattoo then get it but when you do go to john and hope that he can help you out. The shop is clean and everything is very relaxed. Lastly johns smashing the neddle is always fun to watch.

Jon is an amzing tattoo artist. He does graet work and will make sure your experience is good too. His wife is a nurse and so everything is very clean. I know people that havent went to jon for every tattoo they've gotten and will not go to another artist. I went there to get my snake bits done twice and i won't go to any where else for a piercing. they are both great people and your tattoo will come out the way you want it promise. If you go to ask for Jon. I don't if there is another artist there but he is my favorite and I've seen some great work that he's done.
i grew up in traverse, poor boiz has been in buisiness for awhile ,jon the owner has done some work on a few of my friends one that i know of has made it in to the maggazines
Personally I get all my tattoos from John (owner of poor boyz) hes a pretty cool guy. I would not go to any of the other shops in town, they don't have enough experience in my opinion. However it depends on the sort of tattoo you're interested in, John is the best, but like every artist he has is own nitch, hes better at bolder/tribal sort of things, his lines and fills come out very crisp. If you were looking for say a portrait or some sort of realism, I have no suggestions, the people who do this well locally are pretty private.
