Thats kinda like goin to a car lot and asking "how much are your cars?"...Too many variables and not enough info...how big where at on the body ...color or no ...what artist?...where do ya live?....there are so many variables here that there is no way to intelligently answer that question ....I would suggest that yo contact a custom tattoo artist and ask...then contact 10 more and ask ...that is AKFTER you looked at their portrait work...wish I could have been more help...T
By the way Shane is probably booked but give it a try...he is GREAT!!!....
I have been waiting 8 months for my tatt with shane. Its days away now!!! I have the answer that you are looking for, but I am not sure if it is proper internet educate to post in on an open website with respect to Shane. This is going to be my first tattoo ever... I have looked through about 1000 plus pics of tattoos and looked at 200 artist ( I never do a half ass job on anything) and Shane is doing my tattoo. When he told me I would have to wait 8 months I was thrilled...yes he is that good you have to wait. I would say if you really want to get something done you should just head down to Bear Del. where he works. Pretty soon his is going to break through and I mean like really break through and its going to be really pricey and he will be book forever. His shit just keeps getting better and better. The guy is really progressive... I know he is already a big name in the tatt industry, but you can say you heard it here first when he really blows up!
Worth waiting for!
8 months of waiting is nothing compaired to a lifetime of it being on your body. I read this board alot and I see alot of people just going out and getting tattoos like they are buying cds or books or something. I personally at this point in time have no tattoos. But I do have a un-measurable respect for real tattoo artists and tatoo in general. The waiting process in my mind is one of the most important parts of tattoo. You hear it all the time, you have to earn a tattoo. Well the wait is also part of the trial. You have found the artist now give the respect and start the trial. I am a "true believe" that the wait is worth it! And in my mind that wait is also an added bonus of how original your tattoo is.

WOW! i wonder if shane uses a stencil
More importantly...what does it matter?
EXACTLY
;)
Thanks for the spelling. At least you knew what I was getting at. I was a psych major not english. Not sure about the stencile. But hell if he does he sure knows how to use it.
drop the e, sorry spelling again.
Obviously the artist is the best person to ask. Portraits tend to take 4-10 hours to tattoo and artist prices range from $100 - $200 an hour. Of course Shane uses a stencil, its the way he gets those portraits so perfect.
two words: TOM RENSHAW
Hands down the best portrait artist I've seen, in mags, in person, anywhere. Google him. My buddy got a perfect one done for ( i don't know if its proper to say prices on here but...) $1500 and gave a $200 tip, it was worth more. Tom Renshaw, Michigan go see him.
Tom is awesome, of course. The thing to keep in mind when talking about the "best" there is are a whole bunch of the best(well, at least there are a few), they just have different flavors.
Yea man, in art there really is no best as its always evolving. one of the best portraits ive seen though was that one Nikko at Ignition tattoo did of Will Ferrel as Elf
I saw Tom do the best portrait I ever saw in about 2 hours WITHOUT a stencil
which one in Toms gallery is it?
yeah, that nikko piece is amazing, I cant believe that guy came to guest at our studio (that elf was done on one of ourt artists). Seeing as how we're stencil happy, you should see Nikko's stencil. Insane, that guy is able to map out like every single shade in the world. Indeed, with the latest run of portrait artists that Ive met they are all excited about having different solutions to keep their insane stencil maps on the skin throughout the whole tattoo. Ill be launching a site for "stencil stuff' in the next few weeks...
Oh thats cool one of your artists got it. yea when i first saw the picture i thought it was just a painting then i saw it was a tattoo, and i couldnt even believe it. i looked through his gallery and WOW his color portraits are amazing. and hes done like everything. Xmen, Batman Catwoman, Beetlejuice, Doc Brown, The Penguin etc etc. and they all look like photos almost. its crazy. His studio is like a 7 hour drive from where i live but im seriously thinking about making the trip. I want to get a portrait of Hunter S. Thompson maybe even in the style of like Ralph Steadman, if thats even possible. but i was thinking itd be something right up his alley.
I couldnt recommend Nikko enough, well worth the wait and drive. He is one of the most genuinely humble artists with some crazy skills and talent I have ever met. One hell of a guy, I hope to get work from him someday.
