power supply repair question

5 messages · last activity 3/9/2006

i have an old national power supply. a power surge fried my power supply. uppon further investigation i found the problum to be a burnt 14 pin chip and IC socket. i have since replaced the socket, but do not know what chip to replace the old one with. since the old one was burnt, i cannot read the info printed on the chip. does anybody know if it's a timer Ic, or quad comparator, or quad op amp, or what? any help would be appreciated.
I would try contacting National and see if they can tell you, or maybe request a schematic? Either that or stop at the local radio shacks or electronics warehouses and see if they can help. Bummer man!
already tried radio shack. no help, sadly. i called national, but the sales rep was no help. i'll just keep trying them, untill i get some assistance from them or here. thanks for the suggestions, though.
Those power supplies are NOT manufactured by National...call them and ask for the manufacturer or look on the inside of the chassis itself.....had the same problem years ago and I had it repaired at a local electronics store and paid $165 (they only sold for $100 back then with clip cord and footswitch) the next time I got in touch with the company that makes them( and cannot for the life of me remember the name!...hey! I'm an OLD FART....Thats MR. OLD FART to you!)but they were great sent me the part plus an extra with written instructions...FOR FREEEEE!!!!! I love the power supply and have used them for years with only the 2 problems..I think thats pretty good for 20 years worth of use....Anyway good luck and remember National still sells them for just a little over $100!!...Taz
I got national to send me the chip for free (thanks so much guys, love ya!) but they do not have schematics and the people i talked to did not know the manufacturer. i asked them if they could find someone who did know, and after a long wait they couldn't find the info either. the only info i am able to find on the inside of the box is Chatchawan Electronics, Inc. is that the origional manufacturer, or just a part manufacturer? i'll try to look them up, see if maybe they can help. Thanks for the info, mr Taz. 20 years, huh? i"ve gotten 5 out of mine. hope to get as much out of this old girl as you one day.
