Question about apprenticeship

5 messages · last activity 10/18/2007

I am really looking into getting into the field of tattooing. However i currently have a job that demands some pretty crazy forever changing shifts out of me weekly. I would just straight up give up my job if I didn't have bills and debts to pay off but I do. Tattooing has always been an interest of mine and i have done nothing but study fine arts for a good portion of my teenage and into adult years. My question really is here. I know that an apprenticeship is my best option if I am really serious about my goals as an artist, and am more then willing to dedicate myself to the field. Am I wasting my time hoping that some one out there is willing to take up a student who is constantly having to change their work schedule up?
yes. just kidding. all you can do is try asking, take your piccys. tattooists are a funny breed at the best of times, dont get disheartened if you get a couple of knockbacks. good luck. oh just one more thing, find out who the good tattooists are and go to them, dont bother with the shit ones. believe me some of them think they are better than they really are.
Thanks, I figured as much, tattooist are after artist, and artist have to be the strangest breed of folk on the planet, not to mention so many who think they are something they are not.
I agree, look to the good artists, I would also suggest an artist that has been in the business for quite some time. Furthermore, you may want to take some time to sketch while you're in there shop, and once you get to know the artists start making coffee/food runs, let them know you're working, but ask if they need any help around the shop! If you do it right they'll ask you if your interested, if they don't like your art ask them for suggestions...Good Luck!
I have a piece of my own art tatted on my arm, fairly large piece. 3 artist in the shop that day, all couldn't stop talking about how amazing my art was. The artist that did it up in ink for me is a pretty amazing guy. Hes booked so solid i had to get in 2 and half months in advance. I think i might go back and talk to him.
