Questions About Visible Tattoo's And Regrets

6 messages · last activity 1/26/2007

I am 18 and considering getting my first tattoo. I have always thought about it but knowing that I am one to change my mind have waited and decided to only get something if it is truely meaningful to me. I have decided on an infinity sign on my wrist as a reminder that life goes on and not to dwell on things that I cannot change, I don't know if that seems obscure to other people, but it is important tor me. Since it is in such a visible place (though I will get it positioned that a watch could cover it up) I am a bit hesitant and want to consider it a bit longer. My question is this, is there anyone who could tell me about regretting getting a tattoo and why they do so I can be prepared and about visible tattoo's in a corporate world, as I am not entirely sure where I will end up in life. Thanks so much
Sounds like you are already regretting it before you are even tattooed. There is nothing wrong with waiting. Sure we are in a culture based on instant gratification, but holding out to get a more complex piece to show the symbolism of what you are trying to represent will make you MUCH happpier in the long run. Also like you said, you don't know what the future has in store for you, and it's ok to get work done in less visable areas that won't affect long term work problems [which of course allow you more disposable income for more amazing tattoos!] good luck
You already have doubts...don't even THINK about getting tattooed!
Tattooing rewards patience. While I am an advocate for getting high quality visible tattoos, I also would suggest waiting until you are in your early twenties. Basically, if you are responsible and mature enough to get a tattoo, then you are mature enough to wait. I think a beautiful custom infinity sign ala alex grey or M.C. Escher could be very positive in a highly visible area, but I would absolutely wait a few years to find and afford an exceptional artist and until you are a bit more settled in the world and your skin. A LOT about the way people will react to your tattoo depends on the artist. that is, highly visible tattoos can create a very positive response from people if the art moves them. If its mediocre then people will react negatively.
Thanks, it is not money or anything that worries me because I would never get something that I didnt love as it is part of me forever. It is definately still a doubt for me as I wonder whether I will end up in the art world or corporate world, and I don't want to be help back. I'm actually going to talk to my dad tonight as he is a lawyer how tattoos are perceived in the hiring process and the work environment. But I really do thank you guys for your input, I do agree that I need to wait until I am 150% positive I want something that I will have forever, especially if it could change an opinion about me in a career, which is extremely unfortunate, but an inevitable reality that I have to face.
I have been thinking and I am going to wait on such a visible tattoo. I have decided to start with one that I am very sure about, the aquarius symbol (the two waves) on my inner right foot right where the arch is. It looks really simple and yet the way it goes with the line of my foot works really really well. Unfortunately I'm going to have to wait until the weather gets warm so I can go barefoot.
