The news ruined my entire day.....
SUCKS!!
gutted mate, gutted.
Crikey! I'm gonna miss him! For a spell i was trying to get him to check out our Jamaican crocodiles. He was just too busy. Nice man.
That's very sad but I can't say that I'm very shocked about it. He tended to be very invasive with wild animals. He always had to touch them, move them around, poke at them...
It was just a matter of time
But, he always maintained that when he got hurt that it was his fault, not the animal's.
You die how you live.. if you lead an interesting life, you'll die an interesting death.. Rest in peace Steve.. you were always amusing..
Yeah. It's just the news things are full of people saying how suprised and taken aback they are.
He was a great man and one of the few selfless people left in the world that dedicated his life to the greater good of the environment and one of the only ones I've seen that did it hands on but didn't become outwardly bitter towards people about it.
Irwin was a great guy. he gave the bulk of his income away in helping animals. yes he did get "invasively" close to animals but i really believe that he saw himself as just another animal. he spent his life not only educating people about animals but fighting to keep them alive, and what i think what was most shocking about his death was that it was a relatively safe creature that killed him. For a man who spent his life wreslting with alligators and getting up close and personal with the most dangerous animals on the planet the fact that a stingray of all creatures killed him. after being bit countless times by snakes and spiders and all manners of poisonous creatures that a stingray should sting him in a one in a million spot and suddenly he was gone. i believe his death is very shocking and a very sad blow to not only his family friends and fans but to the animal world as well. they lost one of their tireless defenders.
Yeah, a in a million. It's like a tornado chaser being killed by a lightning stike in an everyday rain storm. He will be missed. He did great work educated the public.
I personally think it's a better death for him this way. If a crocodile had done it, it would have been a violent, messy death...and possibly drawn out. Losing your husband/father is hard enough, having to see him ripped to shreds is truely truely scaring. A direct stab to the heart is one of the cleanest deaths a wild animal could possibly inflict and you're right: It is like a lightning strike. If he had to die, it was a good way to die. I have no romantic ideas that it wasn't as painful as all hell, but still...
And honestly, it's a lot better than him getting run down by a bus. This had to do with his passion.
I think the best way to honour him is to give a little (or a lot) extra to any wildlife organizations, animal rescue groups, and shelters we can. Even pennies and dimes can add up if enough people donate.
Yeah, bummed me out! I think he did more good than harm. However, that little stint of feeding the big Croc with his newborn in his other hand was lame. I think his PR dropped a bit after that. Kinda like when Michael Jackson hung his kid over the railing.
Agreed. Here in Australia, Steve was viewed with a mixture of amusement and admiration, and even though we referred to him as "Crocodile Tool", the general feeling was that he was a good bloke. Sure we got embarrassed by the way he used to ham it up for his Animal Planet programs, but that's show biz and sometimes that's what has to be done to get a message through. His passion and committment for animals and their conservation was beyond question. Met him briefly in Sri Lanka about 20 years ago where he was surfing and annoying reptiles....thought he was nuts (but fun). On a personal note, I've been toying with the idea of a croc tattoo for some time (I'm terrified of the things, and have to spend time in their habitat) as some sort of caveman protection. Now sounds like a good time. RIP Steve, you crazy bastard.
Clarification: I was agreeing w/Lillian. Although the thing with his kid was a little (err) ill-advised. You've gotta remember that Steve was Manic Depressive (is that the same as bipolar?). If you can lay your hands on the interview he did on Australian TV (prog is "Enough Rope" hosted by Andrew Denton) you get a good idea of where he was at.
I truly believe that he would have had no regrets...a crazy and wonderful character that I will miss...a lot!
What a way to go. At least he was doing what he loved... rest in peace.
Yeah he was cool as hell.....I used to watch his show all the time growing up. Rest in Peace Steve.
Steve Irwin was truly his own man...............................what an incredibly unique and beautiful individual!! He was fearless, and made a powerful statement for those powerless against mankinds endless plundering. He may have at times pushed the envelope, but all of the animals he encountered escaped ALIVE!!
While we all feel a sense of loss, there's no tragedy in dying in the line of ones' lifes work, and we can only hope that the crop of characters that he inspired will carry on in his spirit.
