I received a tattoo two weeks ago on my lower back. I used A & D initially(used it on other tattoo as well and no probs)I then switched to Lubriderm.
After about two days a rash broke out on my back. The rash was red and then seemed to go down and scab a little and start to go away. It has now been almost two weeks since the tattoo and this process has repeated itself. Red bumpy, scabby, start to disappear and come back again. Now, some of the rash is gone but some of it remains. A few of these rashy bumps have seemed to spread to other parts of my body....
Now, one of the bumps on my back has gotten a little large and painful.
None of this rash appeared on the tattoo itself. Only the area around the tattoo.
Is this normal?

deffinatly NOT normal.. if you have medical insurance I would suggest going and getting it looked at..
Also, do you know the place that you got the tat done at? I mean had you been there before? were they careful and professional when it came to cleaning supplys and taking care you steralizing everything?
I dont wanna scare you but this is deffinatly something I would consider you get checked out.. I have a good # of tat's myself and I am always studding to become an artist.. this deffinatly isnt normal..
Good work on careing for the fresh tat with A & D you honestly did the right there things.. cant use anything better I dont think..
actually now that I think about it... the lubriderm could have irritated the fresh tat some.. I would recommend you stop using the lubriderm and use strictly A & D
the a&d will help with the rash and sores as well!
but you still need to get this checked out..
A&D, a petroleum product with a high degree of viscosity ( its THICK) should NEVER be used on an area where there is evidence of a tattoo related rash ans in fact could very well have been the cause of the initial readtion.Stop using all ointments and lotions for a few days. if you don't see immediate improvement see a doctor ASAP!
I break out in a red rash all around the tattoo whenever I use lubriderm. Like Taz said, stop everything and if you use lotion again in a week or so try a different one...
Ack, just reread the thread, this is the problem with posting medical questions on a public forum... definitely DONT use A&D after 2 weeks, you should stop using it after the tattoo peels(304 days usually), then use a fragrance free lotion when the tattoo gets dry. But really go show the tattoo to your artists...
Gabe,
Sorry about my post above.. as I said I was no professional only have gotten tat's in the past and that is what I was told to do to care of my fresh tattoo's and have never had any problem..
I also have extremly dry skin.. and use lubriderm on a regular basis just for dry skin in general.. but I was told by my tat artist to not use the lubriderm..
my question is.. why do u say to NOT use A & D after it peels?
From what I was told you want to keep it moist even after the peel.. and A & D not only does that but it also helps gaurd against infection, irritation ect.?
Sorry if this is a stupid question.. but that is why I am here.. TO LEARN as much as possible..
Synner, contrary to common mis-belief, A&D does not contain any anti-bacterial ingredient and while I know many people swear by it, it has been known to cause other people problems and was originally made to treat diaper rash. Many people tend to have rashes when using petroleum
based products, often due to using too much and not allowing the tattoo to
get air which it needs to heal. More often than not, rashes are caused by the product being used to heal the tattoo than a problem with the tattoo itself and anyone experiencing any problem with how their tattoo is healing
should promptly speak to the tattoo artist who did the work as most of us have encountered this and know alternitive products to suggest. Doc
thanks you for the explination..
I just wish there was now a way to remove the misleading info I posted earlier..
Again... Thank you!!
