I just started school on tuesday, I was really excited because I was taking an art class "advanced drawing" I was so dissapointed, you cant even doodle, there is no drawing what so ever, all you do is make things outta candy wrappers and make book bindings, now the question now is to drop the class or is there some hidden thing there thats gonna make me a better artist, and opinions

I suggest give it some time. I didn't go to college until I was 21 years old. Been drawing and painting since I was a lil tyke. When I went to art school I thought I knew a lot of what they were going to teach me and I would just be refining a few things. Well they did start with basicis and I learned a shitload of stuff I had no clue about. You may wind up drawing what you are gooffing around with now. When you start school or a new class it's easy to want to dig right into the cool stuff and want to start drawing the stuff you love right away. But you'd be amazed at what you can learn from drawing the simple boring stuff that makes you do a better job when it comes to drawing the stuff you love. My 2 cents is to stick it out a bit longer and see where it takes you. If you feel you've given it enough time and it's going nowhere then maybe try something else. Good luck.
Art classes in my very limited experience tend to start with a focus on creativity and then more technical stuff... Stick with it a while. Scuplting, painting, and any other form of art can each have their own lessons that can be applied to other mediums. When you get an assignment, try to do it one better and you'd be surprised what you can learn.
art class > no art class ?
It may not be what you expected, but even if you learn just one or two things that can help you later, its probably worth it. Unless there's something you really want to take more, may as well let an art course count towards your diploma instead of "creative feminist writing" or some other BS. lol.
P.S. An art class also gives you more critics for your work and more people to learn from. (Hint: Show your teacher some of your work and ask for advice. This will gain you valuable info and a better student teacher relationship, they like when you come to them for help.)
As the head of a College Graphic Design Program, I'd look at 2 things:
1. Sometimes the prof is trying to teach you something that may not be apparent yet... give it some time... you may not know everything.
2. but 2. if the title of the class is advanced drawing, you are going to need to get into that at some point pretty quick, and he should be able to explain to you right now how whatever you are doing relates to that. There's no point in doing stuff in a drawing class that doesn't have at least some relevance to the class...
When in doubt...go ask the instructor...be up front but without an attitude and tell him/her your concerns...T
Here's my suggestion. Go work fulltime for a few years in a shitty entry level job.
Then go back to art school. You lucky bastard!
Ryan is only 15 and in Hugh school dear!
