hi there! I am looking for some tattoo designs that are Scottish, not all of the other stuff. I saw your posting, and I was wondering if you had any luck finding any Scottish tattoo designs? Thanks!
~Higgy
I'm looking for the same thing... a good celtic tattoo, to represent the Scots... If you find one, let me know... I was thinking myself... of having the blue and white flag of Scotland, and overlapping it, the roal lion of Scotland.
wow would ya look at that im yet another fellow lookin to cement my scottish pride on my body yet i can not think of anything better then the flag or possibly tryin to look up my family tartan i would like something original unfortunately i juss cant think clearly enuff to find a good design PLZ HELP!! any ideas would be greatly appreciated
Welp, I may be able to help a little, though, Im not scottish and am not really in touch with my mixed heritage. What I would do is find a scene or photograph that depicts what I love oubout my home country. Maps are kinda cool and original, also scenes of the countryside/castles (get lots of depth in there!). Of course bag pipers are cool and would make a good tattoo. I would find some photographs and bring them to a good custom tattoo artist (I can recommend one if you tell me where you live). here are some links you can try to find some reference. Scotland images or scottish images or my favorite scottish images, the Higland Games!. i think a good artist would rock out the saber toss(I think thats the name) with the big pole coming right out at ya (I love 3-d effects in tattoos). If you can get a good artist who loves celtic tattoos they can be a lot of fun and wicked cool. Welp, those are the ideas I can get off the top of my head!
One more idea, turn your love for scotland and the simpsons into a Simpsons Braveheart tattoo! you'd be most bad ass in my book to get that tattooed on ya. I wish I could!
New address if somebody has came up with a good Scottish tattoo
I have a scottish tatto of the scottish lion over a shaded scottish flag. I love it but dont feel its complete. Im thinking of incorporating either celtic knot work or a japanese style portrait... anyone have any ideas yet?
I had been looking for a very hard to find celtic tattoo design... I did manage to find it here http://luckyfish.com/
Pat Fish has some great stuff up there and was very helpful. Hope this gets you guys going in the right dirrection.

I'm designing a tat for my brother right now, almost all of his tat's so far represent Scotland in some way, he has "FAITH" in Celtic font across the base of his neck, a golden Gryffin outlined in blue on his left forearm, and our fzamily crest on his left shoulder, the one I'm designing for him is the same one I'm getting, his is going from the joint of his shoulder to his elbow, it's going to be the William Wallace sword (my family went to the Wallace Memorial Tower a few years ago and I got a picture of the actual sword her fought with) holding up a battle-torn Scottish flag (the X, not the lion), and a shard of our clan's tartan wrapped around the hilt.
I have some designs for Scottish tattoos but i am still workin on them...if some was lookin fir a celtic tattoo i found a smart celtic thistle http://loujacque.com/Tattoo_Galleries/tattoo_3897.html
I have a collection of Scottish tattoo designs on CD, there are 1000's of designs. I normally sell this CD on ebay, thought this could be of interest. check it out at:

im lookin to get a scottish tattoo. i was wondering if u knew of any symbols that mean family im having a hard time finding one of that type. could u please write me back. thanx~
I do show my pride on my body, Im a scottsman. if anyone is interested I have my family crest on my left forearm. Where the heart runns.
I love my Scottish tattoo, I have the Gordon tartan wrapped around my ankle in about a 1.5 inch wide band.
Personally I would design one for myself. Nothing like a bit of authenticity.
I have just plain and simple "Scotland" on the top of my back, straight to the point!!!
I have Alba Gu Brath (scotland forever) running down my neck. The highland regiments would shout this at the top of their voices as they charged intae battle....send me an email and ill send ye a picture
Hey, I'm also looking for my first tattoo, something to represent my heritage, as I now live in Australia, but born in Edinburgh. I no longer have an accent as I came here when I was 5, so want to show people where I came from. If anyone has any pics of their tattoos or any idea where to look, i have been looking into getting one custom made, perhaps with a Loch Ness Monster and the flag or something. email is [email removed]
Cheers
the best tattoo would have to be ur family crest.
im away to get the lion rampant tattoo'ed on my arm, gunna look well sweet i reckon!! why not get some variated scottish flag tattoo's ?
If you find one can send me a copy of it one day, im trying to find my boyfriend one but its hard to get good ones
i want to get a part of the declaration of arbroath tattoo on my back approx 25 words and also may be a bit of a scroll or border around it with maybe thisles or lion rampant or saltire could anyone give me idea's thanks dennis
The declaration would be brilliant; So long as 100 of us yet breathe, we will not yeild to the domination of the english. For it is not riches, nor fame, nor glory that we fight. but for freedom, which no man gives up but with his life. (paraphrased a bit)
I have a 1.5 inch celtic border around my upper forearm ending in two celtic half arches facing each other like -----( )------. Inside is the Lion Rampant, and over the arches is Buchannon motto "Clarior Hinc Honos" (brighter hence the honor) in celtic script.
I'm looking for anything that would be related to the movie Braveheart as far as s tattoo would be concerned.
Scotsman~Check out Rod Stewarts' Thistle and Lion tattoos
Here's few thoughts/ideas: Ive got the Thistle on the Saltire background,(left upper arm),makes me feel good.

Good Luck.
try this webpage, ist got other stuff on there but still decent scottish art. www.luckyfishart.com
I have a portrait of William Wallace aka Braveheart on my chest over my heart. If you care to view the design, contact Mike Fitts at Wizard's Advanced Tattoo in Connecticut. He has before and after pics of the coverup, and possibly even a work-in-progress shot. I HEARD he won a national award for it in some magazine.
I've honoured my Scot heritage with both my tats, the first was a combination US flag and St Andrew's Cross flag. My second was a sgian dubh that I bought online as a flash and modified slightly on my lower leg. The "black knife" looks great and reflects the warrior spirit of the Scots.
Hello, Got my first tattoos a few years a go in Toronto and wanted something Scottish but not the usual Celtic band, cross or Saltire. Asked the artist to design me a lion rampant in a tribal, black ink style. To this day it is still my fav and I am thinking of complimenting it with a similar thistle design
I HAVE BEEN RESEARCHING MY SCOTTISH HERITAGE FOR A YEAR NOW, I HAVE GOTTEN AS FAR BACK AS THE 1500's IT HAS BEEN FUN THUS FAR.I ALSO HAVE BEEN WORKING ON MY BACK PIECES AS A TRIBUTE TO MY HERITAGE.I HAVE A LARGE BAGPIPER ON MY LEFT WHO STANDS APROX 15" AND ON MY RIGHT I HAVE A LARGE MAJOR WHO STANDS APROX 16" AND IN THE MIDDLE BETWEEN THEM IS MY FAMILY CLAN BADGE "VIET ANIMO" ALL ALIKE WILL RECOGNIZE. I HAVE FOUND MANY GREAT IDEAS IN THE DOVER ELECTRONIC CLIP ART BOOKS WHICH I FOUND AT BARNES AND NOBLE.I PLAN ON CONTINUEING MY BACK PEICES WITH MANY ZOOMORPHIC DESIGNS AS WELL AS PIECES FROM THE BOOK OF KELLS. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO SHARE ANY OTHER IDEAS.
i was wondering about something like that also...i was thinking possibly a shield with two lions on it with the shield being whats on the flag.....i dunno i havent had any luck researchin so i was thinkin about just going to a artist and asking him to draw....

www.shamrock-tattoos-online.com

oh yeah theres also one called
www.luckyfishart.com
all these websites have other stuff on them,i was looking for irish knotts so it might not be what you are looking for
I've spent a lot of time around a lot of scottish people, myself, I am of Sinclair family, and I play bagpipes with a band that took 5th in the world in Scotland in the World Championships a few years back. Gotta watch it a little with the Scottish tattoos, don't want anyone thinking you are one of those goofball "SCA" people. If you're gonna do it, be proud. Get your family crest. Or else, stylized thistles look really great. Or something simple like "Highland Blood". Just stay away from anything that looks "Rennaisance Festival". Yeesh.
i have a very nice tattoo of a thistle with a celtic design threw it if any1 wishes to see if please email me and id be happy to send u a pic ,, its very authentic and not like others u see in shops i havent seen anther like it since , u can email me at [email removed]
Al, I used to be one of those goofy "SCA" people! I could throw down in my day.... kinda miss it really, I mean seriously, full contact beatings with rattan! But I will agree that some of the folk that participated in that did take things WAY to far! And some of them really did have some hidious tattoos in a short fallen attempt to expalnd on their SCA personas. I guess that "think before you ink" didn't exsist in the middle ages.... at least not that I have researched.
I am a lousy artist, but i'm trying to create a tattoo that has the luckenbooth with a thistle head instead of a crown. My partner's name begins with an M so I've looked at a traditional luckenbooth with the obvious M in it and some openwork on the heart that I would like to be celtic in design - has anyone done anything close?
youre no fuckin scottish unless u live in scotland u where born in scotland or have lived there for most of ur lives ya fuckin tits am sick a u americans wif ur "my great great great granddaddy was scottish" who gives a fuck you bunch of arseholes ur american face it i no its hard put its a fact you weidos get a grip of urselfs!!!!!!!!
^^^^^ yup, thats why i hate neds, i can understand if you speak like that to the rest of your "team" but surely you know how to type in english???
So what if it was someone a few generations back who was from scotland? They've still got it in their blood.... it's nice to see someone embracing their heritage. so shurup and go back to your bucky............
Glasgow girl...your idiotic post displays your lack of intelligence...Hating on someone just because they are proud of their heritage and are American?....What kind of bigotted crap is that?...Go fuck yerself ya bloody nacker!!!
Glasgow girl - I am extremely proud of Scotland, but you and your kind are what makes this country so hard to stomach at times! I see and hear your "team" on street corners and wish my great, great, great grandad had gone to the USA... It's got to be better than living here with uneducated gobshites like you!
Have a nice day now... hen!
Glasgow girl!! ...... sorry!! I really should speak your language.... 'Weegie burd' ya mad howlin rocket',
I moved away from Glasgow to get away from the likes of you. Meetin new people and to broaden my horizons. I would like to shake the hands of anyone wishing to find out more about their Scottish forefathers. American or otherwise. You should be ashamed to raise your head and even utter the words I'm Scottish. With the oppression our forefathers suffered its no wonder they left. We should be welcoming them back, not giving them a hard time. So my advice is..... get a life and live a little. Or give your last remaining brain cell a rest and 'down the last wee drip 'o' buckie and start bouncin oot yer heed man'.
Hey, missin you already.
So Hen
Duin do ghob.
is the lock ness monster in Scotland or Sweden? i confused.
i have a nice thistle designed by myself and the tattooist if anyones wants to see it no prob just contact me
"""""""""i can understand if you speak like that to the rest of your "team" but surely you know how to type in english???""""""""""
Scottish ebonics? I'm laughing my ass off here. That was such a hysterical post Glasow gal. Typing in "yer dialect wee lass?"
But it was also ignorant if you were actually serious. How emabarrassing for you.
Me mum, born (and raised) in Grenock wants to come spank yer wee sassy arse!
The funy thing is, I know that Scottish pride all to well as I grew up in it, but don't forget American soldiers did help save your wee arse in WW2.

So, do we know any amazing custom tattoo artists working out of Scotland? I think I emailed one a while back, ack...
hi just found ur msg, i currently am in the middle of designing my SCOTTISH tat, a thistle (cant beat the flower of scotland) but hows about this, i have a tshirt with an extract of the decleration of arbroath (scottish decloration) on it a very nice piece of scottish litliture. tattood on ur back would look fantastic and it would be very original it reads "in the year of our lord thirteen fourteen, patriots of scotland, starving and outnumbered, charged the fields of bannockburn. they fought like scotsman and won their freedom" or the national anthems first verse "o flower of scotland, when will we see, yer likes again, that fough and died for, yer wee bit hill and glen" hope this helps a bit
angela
On behalf of Glaswegians everywhere i would like to offer my apologies for that eejit's comments. I have been fortunate to have experienced Scottish celebrations in Canada, USA and Australia and i was blown away by the geniune respect and love they projected. Just a shame WE (once a Scot...) have to move across continents before we realise just how great a nation we were and could be again.
On the subject of scottish tattoos, I have a black tribal-ish lion rampant which i feel is distinct compared to the all too popular designs favoured by hardmen. Getting a thistle design across my chest in November by Archangel in Glasgow. It's taken several months of redesigning but i'm really looking forward to getting the work completed. I have seen a "declaration of arbroath' somewhere(sure it was someones back) and i remember it looking good. Another favouite is a good claymore on upper arm- if i had space i would have liked a claymore/celtic cross combination
I got a pretty sick sleve done about a year ago. Basically some knot work bag pipes Scottish Warrior holding the Flag Celtic cross and some Runes. I get alot of compliments on it if your interested I can send you a pic. I am also looking for some ideas for my left arm sleve. So let me know if you got some pics or what ever. Later
Hey all, I know this post is a bit old but maybe you are still thinking of your designs. I viewed the Mark Churms website and used his art as part of my sleeve design. The colours are so vibrant and for me where exactly the scene I wanted. I have opted for the Battle of Bannockburn 1314 to symbolise my passion for my home country.
I got an old school Scotland Tattoo from Terry's (Scots will know who that is) and I have just had it refreshed 17 years later to New school - It looks amazing...so now the sleeve commences today.
All I would say is before you put something Scottish on your body, research what it symbolises and how it relates to you. The story on St Andrew became the patron saint of Scotland and how the flag was created is one of the best stories I have ever heard. Always good to follow up the meaning. Research Robert the Bruce and what was truly achieved from his reign and how Scots today show the ultimate resepect to such figures. I have also opted for an old map of Scotland taken from the Bruces period.
Robert Burns said some mad and crazy things in his poems so read them (Before you put them on your skin find out what they really mean!!!) Nothing worse than finding out later it says your a pussy!!! lol
If you have Scottish blood in you then go for it show the pride - We are a very special nation with an awesome history. Keep it flowing and ignore the gobshites that tell you otherwise. - And remember the wise words of another famous Scot ' Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly goes right to the fucking bone!!!' - Billy Conolly
i got a tattoo today accross my wrist on the underside (palm side) saying slainte mhor , meaning to your great health i think its pretty cool!
Hey I'm first generation born in the U.S. and my dad came from scotland, i just thought i'd mention some designs that my dad my brother and I have gotten, Dad 43yrs: Lion rampant holding flag of st andrew right bicept, brother 22yrs: lion rampant on a fiery shield on right bicept, mcleod clan crest with ancient gaelic motto on the encircling belt, and will soo be getting the one i designed for him which is the celtic tree of life that had a passage (guides at lifes crossroads) hidden in with the bark and roots that grow into the shape of a solidarity (strength and courage), Me 18yrs: solid black thisle just next to my left ankle bone. it was the first thing i did on the day i turned 18 next i am getting "I BIRN QUIL I SE" on the instep of my right foot, it is one of the older mcleod clan mottos and means " i shine but i do not burn" i am going to be going to glasgow this summer for graduation and want to get a tattoo done while i am there can anyone name some talented/clean shops for me in the are? and any ideas for what i should do, i want something that will be discreet and that will go with my clans, McInnes, Munro, McLeod thanks!
Hello,
I know that this is an old topic but I am trying to find something to tattoo on my foot. I was born in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1977 but only lived there until I was three. My mother is Scottish and my father is Australian. I would like something that symbolizes my heritage. Unfortunately, I do not know much about my family in Scotland as my mother remarried and I moved to the United States when I was three. Any suggestions or answers as to how I can find out about my past would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You,
Michelle
The scottish thistle, purple, spiked flower with green spiked stem encircled by " nemo me impune lacessit" no one provokes me with impunite. I also have the lion rampant in red qith a yellow banner above and below that says Scotland the Brave, just a thought

Im looking for a good scottish tattoo as well.....my brother has a celtic cross. i was thinking of maybe a rose and thistle entwined.....anyone have any links or pictures. or even any other ideas.
Hi guys....Firstly i am born and bred Scottish.
Secondly when scots get a patriotic tattoo it tends only to be complete dipshits that get the soltire (St Andrews flag) becuase they have no original ideas. You must remember that you have to live with this tattoo for the rest of your life....be ingenious and novel in your approach to capturing your Scottich roots.
Lets eliminate some possibilities.......Braveheart is a joke....DO NOT get it.....the last fighting king of Scotland was Robert the Bruce.
The Lion Rampant or sometimes unfortunataly known as the 'lion of scotland', which many of you have highlighted, is actually his Royal Crest and is quite a reasonable choice.
Celtic knots are a good place to start...this covers the celtic nations such as Scotland, Ireland and Wales. However the knots represent diffrent things. You may wish to intigrate a thistle or a specific colour choice (blues/ purples) to highlight that its the scottish side you come from.
You should also look at 'PICTI' tattoos. Pre dating the western advance of the scot tribe from northern ireland the picts were the original inhabitants of our land. These tattood people were named after there appearance....picti means 'painted people' in latin. look them up! there styles are very different....more like the druids of northern england.
Finally clan crests are good. Check our your surname and see where you actually came from....where the clan owns land, battles that the clan fought etc...
hope this helps guys...if in doubt email me.!
I would personally stay away from the Braveheart theme, if the hideous little gnome like statue of Mel "I'm crazy" Gibson is anything to go by. But anything Wallace related would be good. I saw a sleeve in a magazine of hte Wallace monument, the man himself and Clan crest it was cool.
My wife has some thistles and Ogham writing on her back http://www.allornothingtattoo.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=71&pos=574 done by Lenny Len at allornothing, which I think is cool, she is American but gets a little Scottish in her every night :))
I have two Celtic knots done by Pat Fish, she is fantastic, and a Saltire with knotwork inlayed (Pat Fish design but not done by her) I'll be starting on a full sleeve next year of my favorite images from home.
I have been reading these posts and am very glad to see other people searching for their Scottish heritage. I do have a tattoo that was drawn for me that incorporates the US Flag, Scotland’s thistle the Irish clover and more. I am just waiting for the right time to get it put on. I would like to see other designs and will share mine.
Thanks
Please reply to [email removed]
I have "SCOTLAND", arcing across the top of my back, in a navy blue courier type font (it's big). St Andrews cross above it, centered on my neck, and a large King's Standard (rampant) - yellow and red in the middle of my back.
Can I get get more patriotic than that?
Hey there... I'm doing Scotland as GCSE Art topic!
I've done drawings/painting ect on Wallaces monument, landscapes of Skye, culture, Edinburgh castle, kilts, tartans, my family tartan, family crests, statues, robert the bruce, robbie burns, football, scottish produces such as, Shortbread, whiskey, irn bru, irn bru cuckoo man, PHEW!!!
Well my reason fer being here is that I want to do a little more on culture/pride, I want you guys to send me some pictures of your fantastic tattoos (if you don't mind!)...
But it has to Scotland related!!! What I would really like is a lion rampant! And ya couldn't possibly SHOW YER FACE, (I would like to show that it's on a human) lol Thistles are cool too or the St Andrews flag would be class!!! I just hope that this works and that I can get some responces!!! Thanx very much
I realise this Scottish tattoo thread is over 4 years old, but just thought I'd give a suggestion to anyone still searching for their's. My grandfather was from Dumfries and when I was younger he, and my Dad, used to read me Robert Burns poetry. My favourite poem has always been "To a Mouse" and a few years ago I got my favourite line from that poem (I'm truly sorry man's dominion has broken nature's social union) and a picture of a field mouse tattooed on my back. It's been 6 years and I still love it just as much as when it was first done. And hey, unlike butterflies and nautical stars, I never see another one like it.
The man wrote some awesome poetry on a variety of topics. Check it out and maybe you'll find something that speaks to you. Hey...I see a Tam O'Shanter half sleeve in my furture...
hello there
im also looking for a tatto, im not scotish, but i was married with one great scotman proud of his country, and we had a boy that we called bruce, unfortunately he died, and im looking for something scotish, i know a bit of ur history, and love things of u, but im wondering if would not be insulting, if not could anybody give some ideas,
cheers
Hey uh I'm getting one for my father on my back but I already have one on my back in between my shoulder blades but closer to my neck. Its a color tattoo. I want one that says our clan motto (Ross) but just the script, but I don't wanna mix black and color real close. Does anyone have any ideas where or how to put it on my back. All I want is the script. I'd rather not get the crest because it'd have to be a lot bigger. I'm getting it on January 5th to surprise him. Any ideas let me know. Thanks!
I think "Glasgow Girl" may have anger issues. So please let us ease up on the vitriol.
My great-great grandparents (not great great grand-daddy) emigrated to Ontario (Canada) from the Paisley area (Glasgow is a suburb) in the 1840s with five kids, and proceeded to have eight more after they got here. I am descended from one of their sons. Ther are several hundred of us wondering around the North American continent now. I am very proud of my heritage. I have been to the UK a couple of times, and Scotland felt like home away from home. Much more so than England, as nice as IT was.
I too have been thinking a lot lately about a Scottish tattoo to add to the others I have. Please, not Braveheart, unless perhaps you really are a Wallace. I am a Smith, so I have been thinking about a Smith tartan. It's very attractive, but I understand tartan tattoos don't age well. May be a Celtic knot of some kind? Family crests don't do much for me, considering we have never had one.The musing continues...
i was looking for a scottish tattoo and ended up coming up with the idea of the outline of the lion rampant with the saltire inside it, feel free to have a look at it on my bebo, www.bebo.com/tmy18.
hope this ida helps!
Hi there, i was just reading through here and alot of people are concerned with what Scottish Tattoo they should get. There have been a few Idea's that are quite tempting. But what i am Going for is my Family Names Clan. You could to just Search it on Google your Surname followed by Clan in Images.
It's kind of perfect because your never going to change your name, unless your female then sorry it may not work for you.
Just another suggestion :)
I am currently working on ideas for my scottish themed half sleve, I started with a celtic cross in the middle started a little high due to covering up a botched job i got years ago. The artist and I were thinking a battle of bannockburn scene in the background with a castle ruins in the upper part some where, and in the foreground an 10th century norman helmet with a skull in it. I am just not sure of the items? or what other ideas would work in the tattoo
I have a lion rampant tattoo on the outside of my lower right leg, just the lion rampant nothing else like a flag (think that looks cheap and sh*te) But is is coloured in black. Still get people coming up and saying that it is a cool tattoo. Well proud of it. i'm not into colour in tattoos but going with the detail in it would still look decent.
Meeee Tooo!
my scottish ancestor didnt come to america of his own free will. he was sent here as an indentured servant- a slave! he fought in the jacobite 'rebellion' and was imprisoned for a year in Stirling then was 'banished' to america, as my family papers call it.
he fought for his heritage and to pay tribute to him for that, the least i could do is honor him with a tattoo. i got it from tattoojohnny.com
i have a scottish thistle done in knotwork across my back across my shoulderblades and to my neck. im proud of it and im looking for more right now!
if my ancestor(keith) hadnt been sent to america, im sure we'd still be in scotland.
Anyone with any Scottish blood has the right to feel Scottish. I am 100% Scottish and 0% British but I don't think it's blood that matter. It's what's in your head what matters. We Scots all have similar egalitarianist, liberalist and socialist views.
