I've been waiting for someone to mention the nymag 'definitive guide' on tattoos , since there are none, here I am out of my lurking mode.
Anyway, who is this Scott Campbell person, "the top city inker" according the article? Prior to this article, I've never heard of his name. A brief google search turns nothing usefull, and in this board his name's been casually mentioned several times, but that's it, just a mention, no rave, no gushing adoration, just an acknowledging shrug that dude's pretty good.
So the question is, who did he blow to be on that list and who the hell paid "$1,000 for the first hour, $200 each hour thereafter" for his stuffs? From what I've seen in his website, http://www.scottcampbelltattoo.com/, he's not bad at all but I didn't see anything that could justify the price. I mean, a friggin grand for the first hour?!! I certainly hope it's a typo in the article. Does anyone know who else charges anything remotely like that?
So, yeah, enlighten me o' industry people. Who is this dude and how far is the article off the mark in your opinion?
Scott Campbell in nymag.com, $1000 for the 1st hr???

Wow..if it's true, thats fucking ridiculous. He's good, but not exceptional.
I think they may be referring to his commercial ventures, and not his tattoo rate..And putting Stephanie Tamez in that group is even more absurd..
Heres' my list..

marcoserio.com
regnyc.com
rodrigomelo.com
sethwoodtattoo.com
myspace.com/danhvu

I know, and Tamez is not even the best in nyadorned. Chris O' Donnell takes the cake. She just got the more distinctive style, and I suppose that's what it counts in the article. I think Scott Campbell's on the list because he tattooed celebs, although seriously, have you seen celebs with great tattoos?
Winny makes an excellent point. Usually celebrities have a pretty bad tattoos.
I was reading the ny mag issue again, and beneath Mike Rubendall's picture i clicked on(Where to walk in)and it gives some more shop's on the next page,if you wan't to just walk-in to a shop..Design's by Michael Angelo,is the real NYC experience..I got a koi fish from Mike P.like 8yrs.ago,and it still looks the same as the time i got it..He put's in a solid tattoo for a very reasonable price..I paid 200.00 for the piece..Any other shop would have charged double that..The only downfall,is that he works first come first serve..He open's up at 4pm,and people are waiting outside his shop a few hours before,to be the first to get tattooed..He is closed on Tuesday, and Friday..A real stand-up guy,and an excellent tattooer..
