So You Want a Tattoo in a Foreign Language

18 messages · last activity 9/13/2010

Ok, so, we all know how I feel about folks requesting tattoo translations etc. Or at least, I think we all know. Regardless. I hate the requests. Hell, if it's got meaning to you, go for it. But I do NOT understand the concept of getting a symbol permanently placed on your body if you can't 1. Read it, 2. Pronounce it, 3. Recognize it if it wasn't on your body. Maybe this makes me small minded, or stubborn, or hell all of the above and then some. Don't know, don't care. BUT. hey. i can be a nice girl -- sometimes. although i'm posting these mainly for my benefit rather than anyone else's. Below you're going to find a handful of links for the languages that I noticed are most frequently requested. A lot of these links provide not only useful info, but also background on the languages, and even more links for you to research your tattoo. Because that's what you should be doing. YOURSELF. Research the damn things. If you can access this site you can access google. Don't take our word that the translations are accurate. Because hell, I'll be honest. You ask me for a translation and I'm going to lie to you. There, I said it. I'll lie. You can't trust anyone but you, and it's important for you to learn that now. If you want me to translate "peace in the middle east" for you into farsi/arabic/whatever I might give you "fuck all you whitey's". Do I seem irritable? I should, cuz I am. ;) Many times now folks have come to this site looking for translations, but then don't do anything with the info handed their way. Or they get snide/rude etc. Unnecessary and a waste of everyone's time (my 2 cents of course) And, hey. After you do your research, take your research to a damn good talented & intelligent artist. A lot of these languages have to be just so -- that 'dot' or 'squiggle' might mean nothing to you, but it can change the whole meaning of the word. I recommend bringing not only examples of WHAT you want, but also providing the artists with the weblinks where you got your info -- just in case the artist wants to see more detail/examples. So. That all said. here are the links -- if you don't see what you're looking for -- do your own damn research. For Farsi and related links go here: http://www.farsinet.com/farsi/ For Tibetan & related links, go here: http://www.ciolek.com/WWWVLPages/TibPages/tib-language.html For Chinese Characters, go here: http://chineseculture.about.com/library/symbol/blcc.htm For Kanji/Japanese Characters, go here: http://japanese.about.com/bltattoo.htm For Hawaiian, go here: http://wehewehe.org/ (hawaiian/english dictionary) For Pidgin Hawaiian (hawaiian slanguage), go here: http://www.e-hawaii.com/fun/pidgin/ FOR ANYTHING ELSE, GO HERE: http://www.google.com and in defense of my snottiness keep in mind that i'm an opinionated lil brat at times, i'm hormonal, and i hate it when people are too lazy to do their own work. in addition, it's frustrating the hell out of me that so many people are requesting these languages that have no significance to them. stop following the trend, start coming up with your own ideas, hell.. be original. that's why you want tattoos anyway, isn't it? or at least that has to be part of it?!
go bee go!!!!!!!
ha! i DO feel a bit better now. :)
good! and how's the staph infection?
the medicine has helped big time. spreading stopped, so did most of the pain/tenderness. now i'm just waiting for it all to clear up and look like skin again! :) i go in for a check up on it this friday. exerting all self-control not to itch. ;)
great news! maybe do your nails or somethinng so you dont scratch???? take up knitting and make somethingg for the baby, cook . . . i am healing a tattoo so i am full of dont touch ides LOL
Bee, I suppose now isn't the time to ask you to translate, "Syrian grils are cute when they're hormonal" would it? .... Perhaps I could over night some Fazioli's to you? ;) Good thread girl! .... J
So glad you are getting better hon!!!!!!!
thanks saiyge & kmama :) so far i'm behaving my itchy self. the tricky part apparently is that when i watch tv i start to scratch -- without noticing it. which usually results in me receiving a lecture from whomever is in proximity! :) J-werk - i almost drove out to the fazoli's today. the garlic sticks were calling my name, plus i saw a commercial for the new cinn. sticks. but... alas, i let my mom borrow my car today so i had to settle for salad. just means when she gets back i might have to go make a dinner run!! ;)
Well if you go on your dinner run, for the love of God be careful! I don't need anymore bad news then what I have already had today... (Some things go without saying.) But, the first thing out of my Dad's mouth when I got home was that my Cousin's house caught fire and completely burnt down... ;alshf;lqs;oiwfowolifasjh;lifas;!!!!!!!!!!!!
ack hopefully no one (family/pets/etc) was hurt. think of it this way -- cheaper a/c bills? sorry. trying to be positive. i'm still amazed that i keep seeing you & taz online -- i would've thought that St. Louis power problem would've hit you guys. but yes -- i'll be careful. man.. if they delivered... well. that would just be amazing. i'd never need to leave the house again!! ;)
As far as I know no one was home when it started. And of all places my cousin was thinking that the fire probably was started in the a/c!!! ...(are you tapped into my phone?) No power problem here darlin'. St. Louis was the better part of 6+ hours away from here. Although stranger things have happened. There's probably a butterfly somewhere in China flapping it's wings and I will end up being the lightning rod. =P
And Fazioli's had better not deliver! You have somewhere to be in October! ;)
Bump.
Hey, Spent some time looking around for an arabic translation site and came across this seems to be fairly good. Only takes s mins to register but worth it. http://translate.sakhr.com/sakhr/elogin_ET.asp
Hei, Check this out. Highly recommended as this company always gets 2 translators to do name translation and tattoo design in any language: one to translate and the other to proofread. Wouldn't have any probs!! http://linguaglobal.org.uk/tattoo.html Nma

Soooooo... I took your advice and tried to find some old nordic characters on google. And I can't find any free translators or anything of the sort. I'm Polish and Danish so I got a lil' Viking in me and I wanted to get a cool phrase to put on my tattoo.. no luck :( maybe someone has asked you for similar lettering?? -Aaron
