Scott i am the new owner of a tattoo shop in Eau Claire Wisconsin, Our artist will make on the average of 1000 - 1800 per week in any given month. Based on a 50% take on your works. This also depends on speed of your work of course. We are a fully licensed shop with three tattoo work stations. with room to grow. Our shop has establish clients and reputation in our area for over two years. We are also a peircing studio, are are currently looking to add airbrushed art works to our shop. We would need to see some sort of portfolio of you work. Let us know if this would work for you . Thanks Jason owner/artist
I am a doctor who has developed two tattoo shops with plans for expansion across the midwest US. My artists have either a college art degree or years of experience. The shops are owned by me until the artist(s) learn the management skills (such as reporting income legally....working with IRS to bust those who don't) to own their particular shop (franchise) and run it in a way so that the tattoo industry moves from edges of the business world into the mainstream......someday there will be tattoo shops in Walmart and Macy's ...and on wall street. So if you are interested in joining the future of this industry....in the US...contact me. Dr. Jerry Stubben
WOW, I was gonna let the post from the Doc back there go, but it really got my goat. What the F***, tattoo shops across the Mid west, one in every Wallmart. Great! thats just what this bizz need a real visionary such as yourself, bringing us all up to speed. Not for nothin, I do declare my income, and pay my taxes, alot of us do. Were all trying to make a living. But this Bull Shit attitide that tattooing has become so mainstream that any one can do it, and any knuckle head with $$$ burning a hole in his pocket should open up a shop. What the Fuck ever... Under normal circumstances I've got no real problem with someone who doesnt tattoo owning a shop. I know several people off the top of my head that I can name. Hell you take care of your people, and give a damn about the buisness, than by all means knock your self out. But this attitude that chains of shops is a good idea, wake up. Anyone who does this for a living can tell you the shits hit the fan. There are too many shops, too many tattooist's, and too many people who dont seem to realize it. Maybe IM misunderstanding this post, Hell maybe it was a joke to get people like me fired up, I just needed to speak my mind here... Joe Capobianco HOPE Gallery New Haven CT
Well, if that doesn't just fire me up too....Why do we have to have so many money hungry jerks in this country that stick their noses where they don't belong? Why not just ruin an ancient art form that has been passed down for generations by artists who truly love what they do even if they don't get paid for it. I'm with Joe on this one. I hope this is just a sick joke. Larry Brogan Tattoo City Lockport, Illinois
Ok, I was going to ignore the good doctors post, but Ill put in my chips here if the message is going to get discussion (cause I love discussion, Im a yapper). I am not a tattoo artist, hence my reluctance to join the conversation, but I do love and am embedded in the tattoo culture and business. Joe and Larry have articulated a lot of my opinions (go figure, I learn these folks!). My thought at first was the doc may be onto something (Im all for "business" minded folks helping and teaching artists how to run their own business. Its a very important skill, and one that many self taught tattoo artists dont have. It is very empowering to turn talent into a living by using creative business practices, and I enjoy helping artists with business). My first clue that something was amiss(or at least differed from my thoughts) was the comment about busting folks. If you want to be in the league of top notch tattoo artists, then you pay your taxes. Anyone whos been in business for a while knows Uncle Sam will catch up with ya, so dont worry, the artists that are your competition are law abiding citizens. That said, let the IRS do its business, but mind your own. I wont peek into your books and expect you to respect my privacy thank you. When you say you want to move this industry into the mainstream and into the wallmarts and Macies of this world, I think you are doing the art of tattooing a massive disservice. By its nature the "tattoo" should not be something that should be mass produced at malls and department stores. Tattoos "shouldn't" be "accessories". Custom tattooing does(or should) have appeal to the masses, but as a unique artform that expresses personal beliefs/thoughts, not as a "mall store". Tattooing, as I see it, is first and foremost a unique artform that should *not* be commitized like fast food. The "goal" of the "custom" tattooing industry(as I see it) is to educate the public in how to find unique artistic tattoos that are designed by both the clients ideas and the artists experiance and style. Now, there is obviously large place for traditional designs and flash tattoos, with these styles having a large of a place moving the industry forward just as custom tattooing does, but the element that is common with both traditional, flash, and custom styles of tattooing is finding a design that is perfect and unique in its meaning to the client. Blah bah blah, the post annoyed me a ton, and folks are expressing their opinions, so theres mine in a nutshell. I do agree that if we educate the population about the art of tattooing (something we are working towards with this site, we have a ways to go but were gonna get there) then we can move the industry forward. but not by making more tattoo studios in malls, but by educating people interested in tattoos in how to find the perfect talented artist for them. Ok, I think I got to the crux of what i dont like... Dont like: We need to bring tattooing into the mainstream by making it a commodity so we can have tattoo shops in all the malls. Do Like: Lets bring tattooing into the mainstream by educating consumers how to find great tattoo artists, and then the *talented artists* will be busier with *educated clients* so more people will have high quality tattoos. As we all know, quality tattoos generate business. Imagine if all the bad tattoos people walk around with were fantastic artistic tattoos. Then there would be another big boom in the industry, with educated people looking for good tattoos, not people going to the mall to get a quick tattoo and a pocketbook. Gabe Ripley, TattooNOW
Can I call you Jerr? Art is a philosophically subjective concept. I could smear fecal matter on a sheet of paper in the shape of a donut and call it art. In turn, I could scribble upon customers skin blindfolded on crack with my tattoo machine and call that art. I could also wipe my ass with an art school grads portfolio because it sucks. Also, I'd be damned if I'd let a persons "years of experience" determine whether or not they're a good artist and whether or not they're going to stick me with a needle. You see Jerr, or you'll probably never see, that I could possably be a very bad man (in your eyes), I could lie, cheat, murder, rape and still do magnificent work that is leaps and bounds above anything your "tattoos-r-us" will ever turn out. What's next, a union?, world domination?, genicide?. In the words of some of our nations past leaders "fuck you, I won't do what you tell me!"
call mario for a job at alien touch tattoo in atlanta georgia 404 304 8783 a busy location
Just so everyone out there, including Dr. Jerry Stubben, understands correctly, the artists, manager, and employees of Jaded Angel in no way support, endorse, condone, or even agree with Dr. Jerry Stubben's view on "World Domination through Tattoos". I helped him start JA, and I am the top artist and manager in the one remaining shop that he owns and have plans on buying the shop from him. We here at JA don't agree and we think this is a hideous idea and would never agree to work under those "walmartish" conditions. What will they have children doing the tats for a bowl o rice a day? whatever. I am an artist with a fine arts degree, I have no desire to be in the mainstream and JA will never be about dollar signs. Sure, we all like to make money and noone likes to pay taxes and it may not be that we are trying to avoid them, we just don'e know enough about it to do it right. Maybe this fucked police state we live in should keep there hands out of our pockets a little and loosen up or make it so all of us unpatriotic, nonconformists, anarchistic types can deal with.. The tattoo industry is the most radical that I have seen on the planet and it takes people who are motivated to do their best and dedicated to the art of tattooing. People who don't tattoo and haven't got any tattoos and show up once a week to pick up the money and are color blind( no disrespect, Dr.) have no idea what this wild and crazy industry is like should probably stay out of it. That is just my opinion and I hope in no way affects my job, but sometimes you have to let the world know the truth.

To Dr Jerky..I mean Jerry!...I am in the process of initiating a watchdog association that fronts out the many so called doctors who barely made it through med school and perform invasive proceedures every day using substandard sterilizing techniques and pass out disease like it was free candy. Why don't you apply your skills to watchdog your OWN damn profession and some of the quacks that fuck up an unsuspecting public on a daily basis....keep your grease weasel hands out of our business or we may have to start playing with yours...do you realize you admitted even bragged on a public forum that you are a world class snitch?? Just because you have a piece of paper on your wall that says you are a sawbones does not give you license to insinuate your greedy paws into this ancient art form. Walmart indeed! You want to do to the art of tattooing what walmart has done to the retail business....basically selling huge amounts of cheap imports much to he dispair of the small business owner who at the risk of going bankrupt still has the moral balls to refuse to exploit the poor and the hungry just for the "bottom line" which is CASH.... We will fight you every step of the way MR SNITCH!!!! Your own employee deplores your actions and attitudes at the risk of losing his livelihood and we applaud him. To you we say watch your step ...you have ventured into a very dangerous neighborhood and its getting dark out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!..T

hello scott, i know this response is quite a while after your post but i thought id give it a shot anyways. I am looking for an artist on behalf of the new and devistatingly upscale tattoo shop located on yonge street just north of church ( right by the mtv masonic temple) Toronto Tattoo Gallery. If you are interested please email me back and we can set up a time for you to meet with the owner and go over your potfolio, cheers.
After reading some of the responses to the professionalization of the tattoo industry, I made a few contacts with "professional Tattoo Industry owners" in California, the UK and a couple other states, one that has really no rules on age, artistic ability or professional conduct. What I found was a wide variation in Licensing, Inspection, taxation and liability. The Professional Norm that is coming to make the industry less of a side show to being an actual business includes "Education based on Artistic and Industry knowledge..minimum two years at an Art or College Level Institution that "focuses on all aspects of body related Art and Design." Licensing with a review board of "such Certified Body Artists" that will monitor and adjudiate infactions of the Industry codes and laws..much as a Medical Board. Thus, keeping those who make the industry less than what it should be...major infactions sited were "under age tattooing, drug use, continuous health violations, fraud and tax violation, criminal conduct, and customer complaints related to "health issues, sexual abuse and violent behavior directed at customer." Taxation seems to be centered around increased license fees to hire more inspectors and fund such things as "A Body Art Professional Board." Also the inclusion of sales taxes on such services as Tattoos and Piercings. Liability is a problem in terms of Insurance costs, mandatory rules on carrying insurance and the issue of making the industry conform to rules that make it easier for owners and operators to obtain insurance at a reasonable rate and that protects the owners and operators from "insurance fraud" whereby the insurance company that offers insurance to Body Art businesses and professionals is legit and will cover them "financially and legally" when they need them. Uniformity is another major issue as artists and operators are asking for a federal law that will make state laws consistent so that age requirements, etc. are similar across state lines. As an Artist told me a few months ago from a neighboring state...we love the age limit in Iowa...it brings us so much business. So the Tattoo Industry can remain as the armpit of American business or it can become what it should have always been the Profession of "Body Art and Design." Respected Professional Artists, not criminals, drug addicts and fools..... Oh ya...you may all be working for Wal Mart soon if you don't change, for that will become a major location for Professional Body Art and Design Businesses. Or at least a few of you.
This thread made me laugh. I don't know all about Macy's having a tattoo studio in it. But possibly a cosmetic artist there would be a decent addition to the chain of Macy's. As for Walmart....are you out of your mind?1?!?! Walmart would never cater to "our" kind....even though they let retards greet you at the door hahaha. Oh and by the way, I my best friend owns a shop/studio in a mall. Joey Cap...you may actually know him. You did a piece on his side, pin up of his wife Lisa. His name is Mark Haley.
sorry doc to burst your bubble...stick with your own proffesion seeing as 55% of the people in "your" profession are fucking people up on a daily basis ....i have personally witnessed multiple cross contamination's from multiple rn's and lpn's in only one visit to the emerg room....how the fuck can a rn or lpn not know how to do thier jobs properly with years and years of schooling? (guess we can call them medical scratchers haha)...you people out of everyone should be watched more than ever......how bout doing some watchdog work there first before you try fucking with a non-invasive proffesion as ours...im with joe cap and taz on this one...its stupid idolists like you that put laws into effect that have no benificial effects on this society...you only help out people who never should have been in the buisness in the first place
