tattoo depth

ok heres my question, ive been doing tats for a while now and still have not master that wow factor with the coloring, the tattoo looks great when i finish it. but a week later the color fades, is there a specific depth i need to set my needles or is there trick im not utilizing, please if anyone knows i would appriciate it.....
