Tattoo has faded and scarred

I had a simple, black tattoo done about three weeks ago by a reputable artist. At first it looked great but then it became, red, angry, hot and swollen. Not an infection, but some kind of skin reaction. Then large chunks of the tattoo (and my skin) literally fell off and it wept, scabbed over, wept again... Now 3 weeks later, the worst area has a red, raised scar and no ink at all, and the entire tattoo is faded. I followed all the care advice and my tattoo artist says he's never seen anything like it, but he will of course re-ink it once it's healed properly. I'm really disappointed but I do have a rare condition that can affect my skin and how it heals. On the other hand, a recent surgery scar healed to invisible in no time. Has anyone heard of a reaction like this before? And how do I make sure the ink takes next time?

not a doctor but all of those issues sound like an infection. Do you have pets that possible sleep in your bed? Animal fur can do a number on recent tattoos.
