Tattoo on Keratosis Pilaris skin

2 messages · last activity 1/24/2007

Hi, I have a condition on my upper arms called "Keratosis Pilaris" which is apparantley very common. Its basically like lots of small hard red goosebumps on my upper arms. My question is, is it safe to tattoo over my arms? Will this prevent the healing process and are there any dangers? I've been searching everywhere but cannot find information on this. Please help. Ps here is a picture of what its like. And I'd like to add its something ive had since I was young. its not a sudden rash or allergy. http://www.keratosispilaris.org/about_kp.htm Thanks
Keratosis Pilaris is a benign skin condition where the dead skin cells that normally slough off instead clog the hair follicles causing unsightly but harmless papules in the skin causing a condition known as "Follicular Keratotic Papules" I have had several clients afflicted with KPS and ,in conjunction with a skin doctor found that people afflicted with this disorder CAN be tattooed safely and with good results with some simple precautions...in the two weeks prior to being tattooed soak the area in as hot a water as you can stand and scrub the skin but not to the point of inflamation...air dry for 15 minutes then apply a small amount of TAZORAC ointment...tazorac ointment is a close relative to vitamin A...continue this until 3 days before the tattooing is scheduled to be done. I am not a doctor and suggest that you consult a doctor BEFORE being tattooed but this process has worked quite well for my clients and myself. Hope this helps!
