Tattoo Scarred VERY badly!! :(

4 messages · last activity 7/22/2010

So I got this huge piece done a month ago on my arm (from shoulder to elbow) and it ended up getting infected even though i took care of it. I loved it when I got it but now there are a bunch of raised areas, puffy skin, and the ink has faded tremendously. I am so upset. I don't know what to do. My tattoo artist said he can't touch it up for a while (possibly 6 months!) and that the puffy skin wont ever go down. But is there anything I can do to make this tattoo look better? Is it true that you cannot minimize scar tissue at all? I was on oral antibiotics b/c of the infection. I am just so devistated and depressed about this. When I do touch it up, will that help it's appearance? I need advice from someone w/ experience in getting or giving tattoos, please! Is there anything I can do to minimize the scar tissue or will I be stuck with it like this forever? :( Like I said the tattoo is a month old and is pretty much healed except for the scar tissue. I have heard aloe, vitamin E, and bio oil can help... is this true??
I suggest checking with a dermatologist. They will have more information about it. Everyone's skin is different, so a specialist will have specific details on you skin type, etc. As for the tattooing aspect. Sometimes gettting scar tissue tattooed again will break up the scar tissue and allow it to heal flat. I wish you all the best, and I hope everything works out for you.
So for the scar tissue to break up when being tattooed over again, do I need to do that now or should I wait the 6 months my tat artist is recommending? I talked to a dermatologist online at justanswer.com and he said that the ideal treatment for keloids is to use intralesional steroids and cryotherapy. Also that contractubex is a cream which is supposed to reduce the scars but the effectiveness varies. I don't know how expensive these treatments are, or if they will fuck up a tattoo.
I would actually go to a dermatologist. Allow them to see and feel the area. Seeing something in a picture, or describing the scenario, is rather limiting. Also, ask the if the cream/therapy will interfere with the appearance of the tattoo. Yes, you will have to wait for the area to heal completely before you get it tattooed again. Also, talk with the artist before getting it "touched up". It is possible that the area is so scarred, that it may "blowout". The artist may not be able to go over the tattoo with the same detail. There are so many variables. Good luck, and I hope it will work out for you.
