Tattoo while breastfeeding?

4 messages · last activity 4/12/2011

I have a client of mine who is expecting her first child in a few months and wanted to get some work done after the baby is born. She is however breastfeeding exclusively and wanted to know if it would be safe to get a tattoo while she is breastfeeding. I didnt know how to answer this-I know that pregnant women are not recommende to get tattooed, but I never had someone ask about afterwards while breastfeeding. Any advice? Thanks!
unless your tattooing her nipples i wouldn't think it would harm anything. its only skin deep, lol.
The further away from breast area the better. While there has been no real research on this matter and highly doubtful if there ever will be,the ink particles does get in to the body. Some docs will argue that it is possibile for some contamination of sorts to the milk. Some will say no problem.I go with the placement of the Tattoo.example; if client is breast feeding and wants a breast tattoo I tell them NO.If tattoo is lower back or legs or as far away as possibile from breats area then I am ok with it.Also if there feeding I highly recomened them to bring catch cups for the breast,or extra towels for leakage. Most times tattooing on a feeding woman the stimuli of the tattoo prcess will cause the breast to start producing and leaking. In general i try to talk them into just waiting, give that child the most pure milk the mother can at such a vital time in life and development of the baby.I really try to steer away from inking on a breast feeding woman. hope this helps.
Thank you for the advise...I felt it was better to err on the side of safety and say wait until your done as well. Her husband is a steady client of mine and with the new baby they were thinking of doing something for this. This will be her first with me but she wants an entire back piece done, and honestly leaking boobs are NOT my idea of fun! LOL! Thanks again Elrich!!!
