This is the initial line study of one of a pair of pinups I am doing on a chick named Meghan....its coming along...Watcha think?

Ya, not too bad for an ol' fart, guess there is some advantages to expierience (and dedication) I'd a put the cleavage, curves of the boobs in between the lacing but then again, you did say it was for a woman. Nice start, when do we get to see the finished product? Hopefully it will partly appease some of the 'critics'. I figure you're doing it in black/washes?...Doc

Actually Doc and Mike this is for a girl and she didn't want big ones! And since it will be full color the cleavage will be in skin tones this is JUST the black lines and not even quite done with that part yet ...just gettin warmed up!! I thought it might be nice for the young newbies to see how it works from stage one to finished project.....there is another pinup for the other side ( both calves) I will start on that tonight. Ya, I caught that the client was a woman and have noticed, most women don't want big hooters on their tattoos, can't imagine why not, weird creatures. I like the idea of the 'stage work' and would think it might help some of the 'aspiring artist' who freguent the forum. Personally, I've always been somewhat fascinated with watching the process of developing a piece of art. Keep us posted...Doc

Taz, it has the beginnings of a very beautiful almost "Alphonse Mucha" esque quality, although with a sort of modern interpretation. Interesting! Do you like Mucha's stuff? Maybe you should!!!

Is the tattoo itself going to have some shading in it? I love her expression. Kinda that smarmy/sexy thing from the 30's She reminds me of Kathleen Turner. I tried a pin-up ish thing a couple days ago. Unline you, my proportions skew horridly when I try to draw prospective. I tried to make mine look like her legs were going back away from the picture, but she just looks like one leg is deformed. And her arm's buggered.

Al...Mucha is one of my all time heroes and I love his interpretations therefore the similarities...did a dissertation on him in college and my uncle owns two original Muchas!. Lillian thats just what I am going for!...I think Kathleen was one of the most drop dead gorgeous women to ever grace the screen so there could def be a bit of her in there!... Thanks guys...but remember this is just a start...a line study if you will and yes she will be fully shaded Lillian...it will be a full color tattoo with background reminescent of the "hot girls" of the 40s and 50s! I will keep ya posted...doing color studies as we speak!...TAz

Just talked to Meghan herself (the client who commissioned these pinups and she is comin up saturday to get started on this one...isn't it great when ya get a customer who is patient and understands that good art does not come overnight?...And a hootie to boot...Meghan will be on staff at TAzfest so you will be able to see her pieces in person there!...her tattoos too!!...AH ha ha ha ha !!!

Looks good, it will be fun to see the piece(s) progress!

And the line work...the arms appear skewed but that is just the curve of the leg...next week color kids!!! YAY!!

arent the thumbs on the wrong side...thumbs would be away from the viewer in this position. i think that leads to the melting hair comment.... i cant tell if her hands are upside down LIFTING her hair or Pulling her hair up. if you get what i mean...and if so this image calls for her to be pulling the hair up, because its a natural movement. and the mouth is to the left, maybe use the cross in the face to get the right spacing and alignment..

Face and hands will be just fine wait ti you see the final finished tattoo next weeks but thanks for your comments I appreciate them!

When you see how the thumbs will be shaded in you will find that they are indeed on the bottom...this is just LINEWORK and it can be misleading ...you should know that When are we gonna see YOUR work?

Okay, the picture is down now, but I remember it well enough to make the comment. The hands WERE correct as far as the picture went. Listen, I'm not the best artist, but if it's one thing I'm good at it's figure drawing, and hands being one of the hardest things, I kind of have a pretty good idea of how they can look, and how they should look. Anyways, sure it'll show in the shading...tends to be how it goes anyways.

Taz, I've been kinda lax on this, but both of these ladies have a really fine, refined, smooth creamy shape. Reminiscent of Bomber girls of 1940's, and a little Like Betty P., but stylized. I like em. Pretty legs!

Koochie sore is definitely a different person than bob... they are both "insiders" though and seem to know tattoos very well (the tones in the posts differ enough, my bet is they are different folks). Bob is an outright Troll, Koochie is going to pick apart your work and watch how you take criticism. I would like to see Koochie's work, I reckon we will se his/her work in the real galleries at some point. Sorry Taz, Im not so sure you can brush that artist off that easily. Cant wait to see the image shaded to clear up these issues. What did you use for reference for these chicks?

Zips on my flame suit.... So there's a few things I would like to comment on in regards to the second pinup drawing that is bother me a bit. Take a look at her leg farthest from us.. The angle of her thigh seems a bit steep in relation to where it it meant to connect with the hip area. If you look at the angle where the crease of the calf and thigh meet you can see what I mean. I think adding some negative space to show the under side of her thigh should help. Since, the leg furthest away should be smaller than the leg closes to us. Also, I am trying to understand why her second calve and foot are not shown? Is there a pre-exhisting tattoo covering that area up? Looking at the angle that is drawn you would be able to see the rest of the calf and foot area. Adding the rest of that calf/foot area in would be more visually appealing and make more sense. The reason why koochiesore is saying her hand looks like is has a high heel is because the negative space around it gives it that appearance. Sure it will look better when color is added and you can differentiate between the two area's. Still the hand itself has an odd shape to it... is her hand suppossed to curling back? Please understand that I am in no way trying to be a bitch, and these our just some observations I have made..Hopefully, my opinions will not be miscontrued as otherwise.

Not at all sweetie...I appreciate your comments and thank you for them ...I am now doubting whether I should even have posted this rough out because eople don't seem to getb that its just a ROUGH OUT...one of many I will do BEFORE tattooing....I can see where you may think the hand is awkward but all will be revealed in time...the back leg and calf will not be shown because something else will be there as you guessed! Though it may not have been your intention, i LOVE seeing the rough work because it gives me a better idea of how the process works.. at least for you. And I really like the lines of the dress.. neckline and arm especially.... they add so much motion and interest to the drawing.

honestly. i like koochie, ive agreed with everything he has said in this post. me and the shop just looked at the picture, and found many things wrong with it. to me the first thing i thought was... "somebody doesnt like to draw hands" the pose doesnt look natural to me. i understand some lines are for shading guidelines, but why are they so shaky. the cleavage is way off and the middle line is wicked scribbly.. uh... the hand does look like a hoof. regardless if its a shadow line, it stuck out to me like a sore thumb... i feel if you had a reference this picture should be pristine, and depending on how this tattoo will be executed i dont deem this to be a powerlined image. which leads me to say that i think the powerlining was pretty bad too, way too heavy on the left near the breasts and thin on the other side, and it doesnt bow around the boob like it should. i feel it has potential but... i dont know maybe im missing why this was posted in the first place?

I thought he said he posted it cause he thought it would be cool for some to see a tattoo go from a rough sketch to an outline to the full color. I dont know much i about tattooing but i know that for that first pin up tattoo the rough sketch looks alot different than the tattoo and thats just the outline not taking into account the effects shading will have on it. just look at the face, the hair and the legs. so im waiting on the finished product before making any judgments on it.

Or post the rough, take what you want from the advice and then post the final sketch to show people. Slagging people for telling you what they think of what you posted seems a bit silly to me. I know Bob Ross is an industry insider because of the content of his posts, he has said things that the public isnt necessarily privy too, and I bet koochie is an artist because of the way he/she/it is critiquing your work. You may disagree with their opinion, but its systematic and detail oriented enough that they are at least hanging out in critique rooms... I am not going to go and pick out the quotes from their posts that lead me to believe this , but am very confident in my educated guess. I cant believe Im arguing over the identity of koochiesore and bobross. About the not enough pics, now they are blurry dealio, my drift is that you spend a lot of time consulting with our visitors and we cant see the body of your work unless its blurry or in rough form. You not going with us for your website is the least of my demons, though I am disapointed that "the check was supposed to go out last week Im suprised you didnt get it" was more like "no, we're having someone else do it". We hustle a lot of work, though, and I hear that story a few times a year. I dont ever want to do a website for someone who doesnt want us to, so there are absolutely no hard feelings there. BUT if you spend this much time consulting my visitors I will call you out when I see fit until our visitors can see a decent amount of non-blurry tattoos. Hey guys...take a look at my "constructive critisism" thread. I actually posted it up before gabe and taz got into it, but it sure does encompass a bit of what's causing the problems here. Especially pay attention to the "getting on the artist instead of the person doing the critisizing". Koochie, I have to say at first I didn't like you...but now I've stopped "disliking you". Yeah I know that makes your day :P. Maybe I'm wrong here, but it seems like you've nearly succeeded, if not succeeded in part of your purpose here, which had to have something to do with pissing people off :P. Now I'm starting to laugh about it myself! As far as everyone else is concerned. CHILL OUT. Taz, you posted your rough draft, you got the opinions. Sometimes you twitched at what was said, and other times you took it pretty well. Either way, given the /way/ you were critisized, I don't blame you. It doesn't help that people kept picking even after they knew the finished product was on its way. I myself questioned the hands at first, but logic tells me (not the lack of balls mind you) that given the skill of your other pictures that I've seen, it wasn't a lack of ability to draw hands, and that one can assume you mean to remedy that. Everyone else with an opinion...maybe try to be a little more helpful, rather than a smart ass, and we'll all benefit more from some actual critiquing. I'm not anyone to tell you what to do gabe, but maybe you and taz should put on the boxing gloves, go a couple rounds, and be cool again...ya'll know how guys handle business. and to doc, i dont think my ability to draw makes my point any less valid. like i said earlier in this post, getting my tattoonow portfolio organized isnt high on my list, im in the transition of moving, and finding a new band spot... i barely have enough time to work on my own drawings. and by me saying, i dont know why this was posted in the first place was regarding that you posted a "rough draft" and have gotten pretty upset from the critiques.. back to doc, me and koochie arent friends i dont know him, but i agree with what hes said in the posts and the paris hilton comment was funny, so what? and no it "aint" no hassle to post shit, other than that i dont have a camera or scanner, and if i did my shit would be up by now, i have to bring it all down to the tattoo shop, take pictures of it, put it on a disc and bring it home and blah blah blah. when i move closer to the shop it will happen and maybe ill have the right to critique peoples artwork if the community sees fit... and i dont think i put out any cheap shots man, i respect taz, and after seeing me and the other artist at the shop went over what we thought was wrong with it, and i posted what we had gone over. everything i said was courteous direct and to the point, trying to make some oversights clearer. i think this thread isnt really going anywhere, if it was a rough sketch and you wanted opinions on it, then why is everyone getting so touchy? if you only respect the opinions of the friends you deem worthy of, then why not just email it to them, or if youre only looking for positive comments, well a thread on the internet isnt the place to go. fuck it tomorrow ill bring some of my artwork down and get some pictures, i owe taz a picture of my albierock tattoo thats way overdue. filthhtH?

I apparently missed that and took the ensueing comments to be an attack on an artist who submitted some 'rough drafts' so to speak and as an artist myself, I know how much things can change from the original sketches to the final work, would think anyone who is any kind of artist would know and understand that principle which is why I said what I did in response. koochie didn't rip into "everybody's" art. but i don't blame you for only remembering the negatives. everyone up in arms about a couple of one liners, sheesh. obviously the problem people have is that some of the things brought up were truth, because others seen it as well. maybe worded differently. in other words, koochie is holding the can opener and there are worms everywhere. try Prep-H if you are butthurt. don't post photos if you are extra sensitive.

I dont at all mean to make it seem like i at all hate this person. i dont make it habit to hate people ive never met. i just dont at all get him. hes been a perfectly polite and honest person at times and others i dont care which way you slice it just plain rude and not to one specific person in general and for the most part for no reason at all. and thats everyones right, but cynicism and little quips are fun times but they dont really help anybody. and thats i what thought places like that were here for. ask me an honest question and i'll give you an honest answer. thats the only thing i ask of other people because i ask it of myself. so thats all i'll write on this. im disappointed i let all this weirdness get me so upset.

Dutch and all you people who have come to my rescue so to speak...I want you to take a serious look at the posts here...Notice that any criticism was taken in a positive manner and a thank you...thats why I put the stuff on here...also notice that there are posts twisting my words and trying to make it sound as if I were pissed because of some negative posts ...i don't know how many times I have to say it....I love criticism...its whats makes us strive to better ourselves...like vishus comments....I said thanks ...I considered his views and because of his constructive comments I will change things accordingly.....but I will say once again....there is a troll here fomenting negativity and I am amzed more people can't see it...but all will come out eventually...it always does... Whether Koochie has a kid or not is irrelavent. It still was a fucked up comment regardless. Also, I am not condoning the way that Koochie has asserted his/her comments towards Taz's art either. Koochies critique could of been handled in a more mature way, and maybe it would have been taken better.

I have watched Taz be disrespectful and sarcastic toward my other visitors (and he justifies it and tells me Ill understand when Im in this business longer), so I am not surprised at all when people are disrespectful and sarcastic back to him. Honestly, take away a little of koochies edge and Im listening to the words of many artists I respect. Taz talks big, but we cant see a body of work. When critisized he responds with "are you stupid, its a rough". The Taz crew has no grounds to stand on calling out for detractors portfolios if Taz is only going to show a few blurry pics. Don't get me wrong, I wanna see more tazwork too (hopefully some day ON me) But I wasn't part of the pack saying that I wanna see other people's work so that they have the "right" to critique. I honestly think that everyone has the right to an opinion on art, it being a visual business. I also however think that even being the best artist in the world, you shouldn't need to critique in such a manner. I did see things man :P, I just saw two heads of the coin...only difference was I respected one side, and didn't know the other, so it leaves me biased. Probably because I have never butted heads with taz, from the very beginning. I came in with respect, and I got respect, from ALL of you for that matter. Which in turn leaves me biased...I didn't think I was special, and I merely assumed that when somebody gets their head chewed off for something, it was either do to a misinterpretation, or the person deserved it. Now in the case of a misinterpretation, I usually see an apology from the biter. Ah, anyways, to add something constructive to this mess, I want to talk about why I would get a freehand from taz. First I respect the guy, which is important with any artist you choose to go with right? Second, I think that the experience of having somebody free hand on you would be awsome. I probably wouldn't go with a big piece, cause I'd be nervous (necessary or not). But just to have something done that way would make the tattoo /that/ much more memorable. Not because it was "better" per se, just that it was done such a fashion. And then I'd probably go on boasting about how I got a freehanded tattoo! But not to be an ass of coarse...I'd just be excited about the tattoo, and that's one more part of the story of it. Jeremy
