tibetan/sanskrit text tattoos

look under learn tibetan and the tibetan language. you're sure to find something there.
there's stuff on the net that allows you to hire a translator, if you're willing to go to that extend. otherwise order online a sanskrit/tibetian-english dictionary. the pic for iverson's sanskrit tattoo isn't very clear. go search for angelina jolie's tattoo. her new one. i'm not completely certain if its sanskrit, tho. i'm also interested in getting a sanskrit tattoo and i know just how tough it is to find accurate translations. even harder to get a tattoo artist ard my area who knows what he's doing when it comes to sanskrit. g'luck
I know there are a few symbols and translations at "me&ro symbols" i think the website is called me&rojewelry.com. I hope this helps. good luck. If you do find anything could you let me know. thanks!
I am working on translating some phrases of my own from english to tibetian and regular sanskrit. If you would like some help emial me and I can see what I can do to get you a translation.
try www.alkhemy.com/sanskrit/dict and go to the pdf file for a full dictionary in acrobat format
Great find!!! Here is a direct link to the PDF.
Hye,
I was just looking at this page, and are also interested in sanskrit tattoos. I tried the link but that didn't work. Can somebody help me to get a link or page where I can translate english into sanskrit,
cheers
Here is a site with a pretty limited number of translations tibetan to english. Good to get an idea maybe but not enough to form a complete phrase.
http://eng-tib.zanwat.org/
Am not sure if there is confusion, but just wanted to clarify for the sake of linguistics, Sanskrit is not the as Tibetan , Sanskrit is a written North Indian Language that was probably introduced into India by the Aryans. Hindi script as well as the majority of other North Indian Dialects are based on Sanskrit. The other major Indian language group is Dravidian. Sanskrit is considered a sacred language as all the words have "word power" and mystical associations comparable to written Hebrew. B/c Buddhism was introduced by an Indian Prince into Tibet, certain early buddhists writings were in sanskrit, altho spoken tibetan became a written language based on phonetic princeples later on. Sanskrit is more closely identified with Hinduism, but has some early associations with Buddhism. If you are intrested in a tattoo with a more buddhist slant, would recommend a phrase from heart/diamond sutra or other comperable text in either Chinese, Japanese or Pali which is an adaptation of Sanskrit used in Thailand and many buddhist texts.

I stumbled across this page while looking for something else, but if anyone would like help with Tibetan or Tibetanized Sanskrit for a tattoo, please e-mail me. I'm a Tibetan Buddhist monk and have fair facility in Tibetan. The mantras found in Tibetan practices are actually Tibetanized Sanskrit (sorry, I don't know the actual Sanskrit alphabet), so I could probably come up with what you're looking for and give you the printed out text in whatever size you'd like. I've done it for some of my fellow Buddhists when they've gotten tattoos, so it's no problem. I've got a Buddhist tattoo on my shoulder, but no words, just a mandala.
Hey I just found this site. It might work for what you're wanting. Try it out.

hey,ive been looking to get a hindi/sanskrit transaltion for a tatoos for weeks, can anyone help me get a translation?
Hi, just stumbled across this page. I want a Sanskrit tatoo with a meaning but can not find no suitable web sites, can anyone help ?
Hi
I've been thinking about getting a Sanskrit tattoo but am worried about an accurate translation. I've found a piece of freeware that seems to do the job but am a little unsure as to how accurate the translation is: check it out at.
http://www.omkarananda-ashram.org/Sanskrit/Itranslt.html
http://www.americansanskrit.com/athome/online01/alphabet.html
This website has the sanskrit "alphabet" and it's English language counterpart. I'm not sure if you wanted a typical mantra or just any way to make words, but this site allows you to see how you would pronounce the sanskrit characters and make words from them... hope it helps. I'm trying to find a word or phrase too.
I can design you a cool sanskrit tattoo. What name/symbol did you have in mind? Jenny J.
I got a name inked in hindi, (which incidentally is the modern day spoken equivalent of sanskrit rather like romans now speak italian rather than latin). Anyway the hindi script is basically the same as the ancient sanskrit one.
I didnt want to risk getting my first tattoo wrong, so I decided to engage a proper translator and typesetter. They checked the sense of what I wanted to say. Plus I asked asked them to show me the result several fonts. Some looked good, others look shit.
Anyway I picked the one I liked, and (rightly) expected any decent tattoo artist to copy it. That solved the problem of finding a tattooist who is also a fluent and literate sanskrit/english/pali/tibetan/whatever translator. (i tried but couldnt find one).
Hope that helps :)
I was looking for sanskrit translations and came across this site http://www.aczoom.com/itrans/online/ it works well, but I don't know if the translations are correct. Hope this helps, if somebody could post if they feel the trans. are correct that would be great.
Hey!
I've been thinking about what kind of tattoo to get for ages and finally figured to get something in sanskrit (being indian an all) :)
I just don't have a clue about sanskrit scriptures... looking for something that's has actual meaning in sanskrit and not words translated..
anyone have any ideas?
thanx
I am looking for a meaning and copy of Angeline Jolie`s tattoo on left shoulder blade.
Any help would be great.
Hey guys

I was thinking of getting a tattoo, I was thinking the word "father" in sanskrit on my wrist. I just want to make sure that if i find a translation, it is lagitamite. I dont want to be walking around with a wrong tattoo. Anyone help?
http://members.ozemail.com.au/~mooncharts/heartsutra/heart_sutra_tibetan.pdf
thats the pdf for the heart sutra in Tibetan, im not shure if its the buddhist slant that was spoken of before, but it might help, you just need someone to translate it or something of that nature. im getting a line or two as a chestpiece of this once i get it all worked out
hope it helps
namaste
thanks for the link to the beautiful tibetan script of the heart sutra.
just a heads up for anyone interested, the famous mantra of the sutra is on p.4 of that file, beginning about half way down with the recognizable "om" character and (read left to right) ending at the third downward slash-mark. it reads, in tibetanized sanskrit, Om Gate Gate Paragate Parasamgate Bodhi Svaha! That is the heart of the prajnaparamita sutras, the perfection of wisdom literature of the Buddha Dharma. It's a mantra so it's meaning is mainly in its very sound, but it also means: Gone, Gone, Gone Beyond, Gone Completely Beyond, Such is Wisdom!
hope this is helpful
Just get whatever sanskrit text you think looks nicest. An estimated 50,000 people speak the archane and elitist language, and you are not among them, so what does it matter really? OOOOOHHH EXOTIC SANSKRIT! What a stupid trend- about as cool as Kanji
Seems to me that there is alot of interest in Tibetan scritp tattoos, interested myself i came across what seems to be suitable artworks for Tibetan Script tattoos, (also an old form of Sanskrit that is found painted on cross beams of Tibetan Buddhist Temples) When i looked into this, there seem to be very little known and presented on the web, plus alot of badly drawn scripts with little understanding.
However check out www.tashimannox.co.uk
this guy seems to know a thing or two, although he is an artist in Tibetan/Sanskrit calligraphy, he will take commissions for tattoo designs.
Hi everybody !!
I am desperately searching from the sanskrit "aham" (which is the first person "I" the selfhood, the alpha & the omega of the sanskrit alphabet) script in tibetan. I found the syllable "Am" but I don't know if this is the same thing... As I am very cautious about meaning I would like to have your help !
Thank you very much
Dr Freud
Ps : Aum or Om was very easy to find but "Aham" is not a bed of roses...
Dear Dr Freud
If you are talking of the root letters of the Alphabets of Sanskrit and Tibetan, it would be 'am' not 'ahm' check out my website for styles of the above scrits.
If is for a tattoo, you may like to commission an art piece of the letter in correct proportions, which are considerd sacred
regards
Tashi
www.tashimannox.co.uk
Thanks for all the info. I appreciate all your input. There is one really great source. Lol you could go to a Hindhu Temple for translations and writing. Ask a Priest there and they could probably hook you up. Just don't tell 'em its for a tattoo. Don't know how some may take that. But thanks for the websites. Now if I could only find a good Aquarius tattoo to go along with an OM/AUM and Sanskrit verse from the Vedas or The Bhagavad Gita... Hmmmm...
Go to this site : www.omniglot.com
You will find a guide to most ALL written text.

This is a reply to [email removed] back in august. I figure you might have found out by now that the word for Awake in sanskrit it "Buddha" from the root "budh"...the word "Awakening" is "Bodhi" as in The Bodhi Tree, under which Lord Buddha attained Enlightenment. Hope that helps.
Hi guys
I'm turning to you now after searching for what seems like the holy grail.
I'm after the mantras associated with Rudraksha - In sanskrit form.
I've actually for the 11 Powerful mantras (in sanskrit format) in a book so the writings must exist.
Just very hard to track down!
With thanks in advance

I once came across a book that i borrowed from a libary in kopan Kumpa monestery in Boddanath near Kathmandu which is in sanskrit which i have, my tattoo that i have is in sanskrit, but these are very sacred symbols with very powerful energy in them if the mind is not ready for symbol great un-balance will begin in the body so choose one that resinates with the heart mind body and soul
father = ????
I tried to post the sanskrit translation of father above but it is not being displayed properly. I think devanagari fonts which are used to write sanskrit are not installed on this server.

Hi, hope someone can explain me the meaning of Om Aa Hum.
As far as I know it means triunity - "Body. Speech and Mind". But to my mind it might be something like "Body. Soul (Spirit or Inspiration) and Mind" and can't understand the meaning of the word "Speech" in that case.
Thanks.
why would you want a sanskrit tattoo if you do not understand sanskrit. this kinda thing baffles my mind. sanskrit is a beautiful language and it's funny to see it is appreciated merely as a novelty by people trying to look smart or cool. get real.
does anyone know of a tattoo artist in Toronto that does tibetan sanskrit?
There are many buddhist mantra sites that have calligraphy drawings of the mantras. They can vary greatly depending on the style the calligraphist uses. I'd just start by googling buddhist mantra and go from there.
Or even simpler... go straight to www.inkessential.com
which specialises in Tibetan/Sanskrit mantras for tattoos.
Dan ;o)
If anyone can translate a phrase for me.. please email me @ [email removed] It's for a tattoo, but I don't want to leave the phrase on this message in case someone steals my idea! Lol, so if you can help I would appreciate it!

Try this link, it was all I could find if you want to research the language and its writings and translate your own tattoo heres where to learn how to do so.
good luck.
other than that there are professionals that you can go see to get something translated. this will make it so your sure it is done properly and it costs a little money but I believe it's worth it to ensure you don't have bad grammar tattooed on your body in a language you don't understand! Look into it. It's worth it to get a proper tattoo!

News from Tibetalia:
I have recently been increasing the selection of Tibetan styles / fonts, and types of arrangement, e.g. not only horizontal and vertical, but also more adventurous forms such as circular and spiral.
(I have to stress, however, that circular and even spiral etc. arrangements of Tibetan glyphs are not some modern-day whim or fashion - Tibetans used to inscribe their mantras in such diverting shapes already a 1000, if not more, years ago, as can be seen in the following picture: Ancient-Syllable-Wheel-Tibetan-Mantras-Spiral-Samples.)
Incidentally, the large version of the second image is quite impressive and most people would probably consider it more suitable as a wall-hanging than a tattoo. View it here: Universal Declaration of Human Rights (An Introductory Clause in Tibetan Uchen Script arranged in a spiral). Needless to say, this sort of elaborate design is not cheap: an image like the two above will cost 10~40EUR, depending on the size, how much manual correction is required etc.
However, I have recently also started listing my Tibetan Script Tattoo Designs on eBay. Though for the moment the selection is very limited I plan to gradually add more items. My eBay items will typically cost much less than custom-made designs ordered via my Website, possibly as little as 1US$. There will also be a sprinkle of Japanese (Kanji) and Sanskrit (Devanagari) Script Tattoo Designs.
If you cannot find in my listings what you have been looking for, you can always contact me via my Website to enquire whether there might be an inexpensive design for you in my archives, or else to order a custom-made Tibetan (Japanese, Sanskrit) Script Design.
(Please use the Order Form or Email address on my Website, not the Email address supplied on this forum.)

Am I the only one here wondering what the deal is with people who clearly don't read sanskrit/Tibetan script and who likely have no ties to those cultures, and who still somehow want it on their bodies? I feel the same way about this recrudescence of Japanese kanji tattoos, usually on people who have never been to Japan, do not speak Japanese, have any cultural ties to the area, etc. I really just don't understand. Is it supposed to furnish you with a sense of mystery? Is it just the elegance of the calligraphy itself and it doesn't matter what it says? What happens when somebody asks you if you study sanskrit and you have to say 'no,' every time? As a student of ancient language, I just don't see the appeal of having text on your body that you, yourself, do not fluently understand. To each their own I suppose.
