Most of the tats pointed out here are not Tibetan at all, though a few are. I can read and write Tibetan myself and am pretty well versed in Tibetan Buddhist practice and culture. Here is one of my original designs: http://www.neoscales.com/images/tat1.gif The "HRI" is mind essence, it is "red" to represent the Amitabha buddha family. The lower seal is the sun and moon, with a "HUNG" with a modified Tibetan flag used as a design background. Here is the ink: http://www.neoscales.com/images/tat.jpg Let me know if I can help anyone...
Anyone know of any tattoo artists in New York City with Tibetan, specifically Tibetan Mantra tattooing experience? I have the mantra and know what I want but I need to find a shop and artist who has some experience in this type of design/writing. Thanks all.
I also have been trying. I have found some but not exactly what I want. this may help: http://www.asianart.com/exhibitions/calligraphy/index.html#Row7

If you search'vanishing tattoo' in yahoo you'll find a site which pics of celebrities and their tattoos. If you look for Brandon Boyd ( lead singer in Incubus) you'll find pics of his red tibetan mantra tattoos. The website is http://www.vanishingtattoo.com/celebrity_tattoos_a-g.htm. Good luck!! Dan
I found lots of tibetan calligraphy and the meanings at http://www.samchenling.org/Word.htm give that one a try.
Just so you know, to us Buddhists, using Lord Buddha or other aspects of our religion as decorative use is very negative, almost sinful. Especially an image of the Lord Buddha himself, since your body is used for less than holy acts such as sex and other things as well. "om ma ni pad me hung" is slightly more acceptable, but choose location carefully so it is never sat on, etc,... I would suggest getting a Buddhist protection tattoo or tattoo to bring forth good luck/health/wealth/long life... because those have a purpose and it is a good cause with no harm done. there are some beautiful images that can be used for protection, but they are very intricate... an auspicious symbol would also be a good tattoo, one of the 8 or all 8 possibly. good luck! :)
There are hundreds of Buddhists mantras using either sanskrit or Tibetan letters you can have done. But be careful it`s spelt right by checking Tibetan Buddhist sites, otherwise It`ll look silly to those in the know....are you Buddhist ? One has to be careful were some Buddhist mantras & images are put otherwsie you may cause offence to actual Buddhists....eg Don`t have such things on your butt...sounds funny I know but I`m serious .. so checking the appropriate location of a tattoo is maybe a good thing ( I`m a Buddhist of 27 years or so ).....anyway, good luck....Om Mani Peme Hum would be the best one to have...a beautiful mantra with many profound meanings.
I am planning on getting the om mani padme hung tattoo soon, my ex got it on his forarm and it looks really amazing. I suggest that you guys check out http://www.geocities.com/incu3602/tattoosbrandon.html it has great, clear pictures/drawings of the om mani padme hung mantra as well as some other buddhist symbols. hope this helps!
what about getting om mani padme hum on the small of my back, across my back i.e base of spine? is that classed as on my butt?
I have been looking for a verticle design or symbol that has to do with the law of karma. If anyone has any ideas, it would be greatly apprecaited.

There's a book called "the Tibetan Book of Living and Dying" by Sogyal Rinpoche. In the last chapter are very powerful, very positive mantras written in Sanskrit. You might also be interested in this website: dharmapunx.com

Hi there While on the subject, does anyone own or know where i can get a picture of a Tibetan Wheel? Thanks Rob
Really interested in getting the wheel of dharma in red ink or anything tibetan related. can anyone out there help me on my quest?
WOHA
It's simple, you can search the internet and email a buddhist temple/ tibetan temple web site. These people are very informative and at your request will send you more info/photos. Also, go to the frickin library, that's where a friend of mine found her tattoo! There is one web site in peticular I think it is called Mt. Hei ... maybe if you search that it will come up...good luck! Cheers Dene'
if you're looking for a tibetan tatto then i suggest going to http://www.incubusonline.com. they have a picture of brandon boyd's tatto which is a tibetan mantra "om mani padme hum" which means 'hail to the jewel in the lotus'. they also have a picture of it.. hope this helps! angel.
I am looking for the Aum symbol for peace and serenity, if anyone knows where I can find a good pic e-mail me please!!
you may be interested in my website and as regards any questions and design about tibetan tattoos. www.tashimannox.co.uk best wishes Tashi
You should go to tibetan tempel or something and then check out the prayer books. You will find the letter it self and ask for some monk to translate it! See its simple! I also love sanskrit work as well! Looking for one to get either tibetan or hindi! as long as its sanskrit!
Hi, if you are wanting some seriously good artwork, then have a look at this guy Tashi above - he is a master artist, he is fluent in Tibetan and Sanskrit, as well as having a huge knowlege of Buddhist symbolism. he did one for me, and its immense! you will be left with one problem - finding a tattooist that can do justice to his artwork
finding an artist isnt a problem, contact us and we will find one for you. We know talented tattoo artists all over.
In regards to your search, I am in the midst of having the mantra, Om Mani Padme Hum, tattooed down my side of my rib cage in traditional Tibetan lettering(figures). If you are interested in pictures or have any suggestions let me know. I do know of one original design of this mantra that is easily attainable. Brandon Boyd, lead singer of 'Incubus,' has an original design that he created from the tibetan lettering tattooed down his forearm in red. Underneath is a Koi fish in a circular shape, also inked in red.
Hello All... seems alot of you are looking for Tibetan/Sanskrit script tattoo designs, i am a calligrapher for these scripts, and often design for tattoos, if you are interested to know more, you may like to view my website: www.tashimannox.co.uk Tashi
Have exactly what your looking for...took me awhile to find myself Tibetan-English Dictionary http://www.diamondway-buddhism.org/diction/diction.htm I also orderred a tibetan-english dictionary onlie from amazon.com just to make sure before I ink it on my body...haven't received it yet
for the quintessential designs in tibetan and sanskrit tattoo designs go to www.inkessential.com
check out www.sakyant.com for Buddhist Mantra / Yantra tattoos..
i am also looking for the meaning of the tattoo that alyssa milano has on the top of her neck, all the web sites are confusing! can anyone help me?????
The new tattoo on the back of Alyssa Milano, is of the Tibetan 'hum' character, i checked it out with my friend Tashi, who is an expert in Tibetan scripts: www.inkessential.com He tells me it is Tibetan Uchen script, however and unfortunatly, in Alyssa's case, it is drawn in-correct, perhaps over stylised beyond the correct proportions and construction, it would not be pritty to the eye of a Tibetan. So my advice is to go to a good authority like Tashi, before you get inked. silly Alyssa did not do her homework !
yeah i forgat to mention... the meaning of the Hum syllable on Alyssa Milano back of neck, is the seed syllable of the heart. Dali Dan
The True Sound of Truth An old story speaks about a similar problem. A devoted meditator, after years concentrating on a particular mantra, had attained enough insight to begin teaching. The student's humility was far from perfect, but the teachers at the monastery were not worried. A few years of successful teaching left the meditator with no thoughts about learning from anyone; but upon hearing about a famous hermit living nearby, the opportunity was too exciting to be passed up. The hermit lived alone on an island at the middle of a lake, so the meditator hired a man with a boat to row across to the island. The meditator was very respectful of the old hermit. As they shared some tea made with herbs the meditator asked him about his spiritual practice. The old man said he had no spiritual practice, except for a mantra which he repeated all the time to himself. The meditator was pleased: the hermit was using the same mantra he used himself -- but when the hermit spoke the mantra aloud, the meditator was horrified! "What's wrong?" asked the hermit. "I don't know what to say. I'm afraid you've wasted your whole life! You are pronouncing the mantra incorrectly!" "Oh, Dear! That is terrible. How should I say it?" The meditator gave the correct pronunciation, and the old hermit was very grateful, asking to be left alone so he could get started right away. On the way back across the lake the meditator, now confirmed as an accomplished teacher, was pondering the sad fate of the hermit. "It's so fortunate that I came along. At least he will have a little time to practice correctly before he dies." Just then, the meditator noticed that the boatman was looking quite shocked, and turned to see the hermit standing respectfully on the water, next to the boat. "Excuse me, please. I hate to bother you, but I've forgotten the correct pronunciation again. Would you please repeat it for me?" "You obviously don't need it," stammered the meditator; but the old man persisted in his polite request until the meditator relented and told him again the way he thought the mantra should be pronounced. The old hermit was saying the mantra very carefully, slowly, over and over, as he walked across the surface of the water back to the island. ... dont spend money on another guy who knows the right way.... if u know the feeling, u can have the hum backwards if u want. keep it real..
For those of you getting these mantra and symbol tattoos please ask yourselves the following questions, "why are your getting it?" Is out of love for the Dharma or is it out of love for the materialistic expression of their form? Will you maintain your body like a shrine since it carries an acknolwedgement of enlightenment? Will you inform people who ask about your tatoo about the time you have spent searching for the true meaning of reality and emptiness? Will you enlighten people with the many aspects of the Dharma? Will you respect the symbols many years from now or will you have them erased by a laser like a stray pencil mark on an old book? Will you continue to hold yourself to find compassion in your heart for all beings? Will you recognize the burdens of all sentient beings and the need to value all life everyday?

Hi, you will find a great website including lots of information about tibetan calligraphy and different tattoos that have been made on demand. http://www.tibetan-calligraphy.com/english-index.htm Catherine
I have the tibetan mantra Om Mani Padme Hum tattooed on my left arm. I think maybe you're talking about the tibetan way of writing. It's an old way of writing that came from India to Tibet. Check it out. Just google it: tibetan alphabet. -C.
...like this link: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Academy/9594/tibet.html I started with this site to learn how to write tibetan and speak it.
Sometimes you have to abandon the internet and actually go to a bookstore or library. I found a reproduction of an early 19th century Tibetan-English dictionary at Shambala Books in Berkeley Calif. I took two phrases in Sanskrit and have them on my arm, Faith and Virtue. I would advise not relying on the internet but checking out a printed dictionary.
People keep on saying that "Om mani padme hum" means to hail the jewel in the lotus , yes that is a loose translation for people who need a complete sentence but oever all this mantra cannot be converted into complete english sentence, it basically stands for everything buddha has taught. Om- blessed to help achieve perfection ma- practice of pure ethics ni- practice of tolerance and patience pad- practice of perserverance me- perfection in concentration hum- perfection in wisdom i also have one question i sometimes see this script written two different ways, one with a circle on top of a line and anthoer cirlce and one with just a straight line at the end, can anyone tell me what the difference is.Im getting the tattoo and dont want to have a different meaning than i intended, even my asian grandparents cannot tell me the answer
Go to http://help-berberber.com/forum100/89261-sanskrit-translation.html and there you can request anything translated. They are very quick and you can be sure your request is what they will translate absolutely correctly!!
Following up on my previous post I'd like to inform visitors to this page that owing to unexpectedly high demand I no longer do free Tibetan translation. I now charge 5 GBP for translation of up to 10 words (or transliteration of up to 5 personal names), including a high-grade JPG image of the actual Tibetan script. I can help with Japanese and Sanskrit translation as well. Preferably Email me via my Website, not the address above. http://devoted.to/tib etantranslation TIBETAN TRANSLATION Yours, Tibetalia --------------

News from Tibetalia:
(Re-posted from 2012; with links to new Website.)

I have recently been increasing the selection of Tibetan styles / fonts, and types of arrangement, e.g. not only horizontal and vertical, but also more adventurous forms such as circular and spiral.

(I have to stress, however, that circular and even spiral etc. arrangements of Tibetan glyphs are not some modern-day whim or fashion - Tibetans used to inscribe their mantras in such diverting shapes already a 1000, if not more, years ago, as can be seen in the following picture: Ancient-Syllable-Wheel-Tibetan-Mantras-Spiral-Samples.)

Incidentally, the large version of the second image (Universal Declaration) is quite impressive and most people would probably consider it more suitable as a wall-hanging than a tattoo. View it here: Universal Declaration of Human Rights (An Introductory Clause in Tibetan Uchen Script arranged in a spiral). Needless to say, this sort of elaborate design is not cheap: an image like the two above will cost 10~40EUR, depending on the size, how much manual correction is required etc.

Please peruse my Website for more examples and if you do not immediately find what you want, you can always contact me via Email or Phone to enquire whether there might be an inexpensive design for you in my archives, or else to order a custom-made Tibetan (Japanese, Sanskrit) Script Design.

(Please use the Order Form or Email address on my Website, not the Email address supplied on this forum.)
